Great for other uses as well!

Comments about D'Addario EXL220-5 XL 5-String Bass Super Soft/Long String Set:

While the other reviews have focused on these "Super Light Gauge" string as wonderful for Slappers who typically use Light-Gauge strings because of the ease of slapping, popping and bending lighter strings, I've found an "alternate" use for the set that probably wasn't what the engineers @ D'Addario were designing the set for...I have a Epiphone Limited Edition Special Run (Mahogany body, Chrome Hardware & Pickup covers) Thunderbird IV in Silverburst (one of Gibson/Epiphone's newly classic colors due to "Tool" guitarist Adam Jones using Silverburst Les Pauls from the early '80s) tuned to C Standard (C/F/A#/D#) and have found that the first 4 strings from this set are virtually *perfect* for this tuning! As for the left-over .040 "G"-string, it certainly never hurts to have a spare G string in your Gear Bag, as I've found that lighter strings are the most likely to break on you when you least expect it.As for the tone of the set tuned to C Standard, both the sound as well as the tension is near-perfect for the tuning - I've spoken with other bassists who tune this way and use either lighter string and don't get both solid tone as well as the needed tension from their too-light sets (typically starting at .110 to .115). And they're D'Addario strings: nothing if not great-sounding *however* you're tuned, and in my experience their Nickel-Plated strings have an even tone over each string, solid low end and low midrange, smooth high midrange into highs that can cut through a mix but aren't piercing like some other strings. The only thing that keeps this set (for my unusual uses) from being rated all 5s is that I generally prefer their ProSteel steel-strings for all my fretted basses but no gauges are made close to this in that line unless I were to assemble it from single strings, which is unreasonable financially. It's a minor difference at best, but worth noting.

not the best, but it works

Comments about D'Addario EXL220-5 XL 5-String Bass Super Soft/Long String Set:

I tried these out on my ibanez 5 string sr series. At first, I really liked them. They had the bright tone I was looking for, and the slap and pops really had that percussive sound. But after like, a week and a half, they started getting sloppy and sounding sloppy..the nice sound doesn't last that long.

Better than EB slinkys

Comments about D'Addario EXL220-5 XL 5-String Bass Super Soft/Long String Set:

If you're a slapper/popper then these strings are what you need. They feel very smooth and are very flexible. The G string has a nice pop to it that's not overbearing. Place these babies on a Fender active Jazz and you'll be all set.
