I really like this humidifier. I have used Dampits before and was always worried about them dripping. With this Planet Waves humidifier, it is much easier to tell how much water you have in the sponge. Also, even if you wet it somewhat too much, there doesn't seem to be much of a way it could drip.

Some reviewsers do not like the way it pushes the strings sideways when you wedge it between the strings. But I have found that you can also position it between the high E string and the edge of the sound-hole, so it isn't stretching anything. I wouldn't want to position it this way if I were carrying the guitar around in its case, but for just sitting in the case at home and not being moved much, it will stay in place that way (even if you position the case vertically).

I have a high end 2011 rosewood /spruce acoustic that won't drink a drop.

My 20 year old mahogany/spruce drinks a sponge a week. The sides of the fingerboard on this high end Canadian dreadnaught were pulling in (scalloping) between the fretwire ends. The sponge swelled them in 3-4 weeks of 5-6 day rehydrates.

If your guitar drinks these sponges dry in a week keep soaking them with distilled water and shaking them before installing in the guitar. Check every 5 days. Who needs or wants to break in another new guitar, right? Get your self a humidity gauge. I use a analog (dial) brand whose name matches Bart and Homer's hometown as these are adjustable. They can be disassembled and calibrated by a novice and are about a sawbuck. You use salt water to calibrate. Search the interweb for directions on this.

P.S. Nothing gets 5 stars from me.

Ther'e not much to this product except a sponge and sponge holder that sits between the stings of an accoustic guitar. Its so simple its ingenious and much less expensive here than in the stores.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

You gotta be kidding. I bought one of these online and when I got it I simply returned it without even trying it out. Why? Well, take a look at the ONE photo that actually shows it hanging into the guitar body. The strings holding it are spread about as far as they can be spread. Result, bye-bye strings in a shorter time, but mostly because of the continued added stress on the nut slots. Whoever ever buys this after reading this, well, you have been warned.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

it is easy to control the amount of water in it so it doesn't drip inside the guitar.
Had one in the past. They are very durable. Sponge can be replaced, but distilled water makes that a seldom event.
The plastic can take being tossed around. Slipping it in and out of the strings is probably harder on the strings.
The price is right concidering how long it lasts--years.

This is product is inexpensive and it does the job well. I have a Taylor big baby which are guitars that need to be kept at the right humidity level so this humidifier is great! I just refill it every other day when temperatures are extreme or just once a week. I prefer to place it between the e string and the edge so it doesn't bend the strings. Keep your guitar in its best condition with this great humidifier.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

This is a nice and easy way to keep some level of humidification inside your guitar case or gig bag. As far as how much and how much you need, you'll need a separate hygrometer device to display relative humidity (Ideally about 45%-55%).
You'll probably need to wet the sponge every day or so, but if you play every day that shouldn't be a problem. For me, when I open the case, the humidifier jumps out at me.That's because you stick it between the strings. That's probably okay, but it just grates on my nerves that I'm sticking this plastic wedge between the strings and into the soundhole. It just seems like there's a problem with that.

Any way, it's main purpose is to give you the feeling that you are actively keeping the guitar body from cracking. And it does seem to help maintain a constant setup and tone, so it must work okay.
I bet a plastic soap box with some holes punched in the top and bottom with a cheap sponge would do the same thing, but that requires a bit of work. I opted for lazy and bought three of these.

There are better products out there. Planet Waves makes one. Spend a few extra dollars and get something better. Not worth the price.
Holds very little water and not very well. Would not recommend.
The sponge is top rate, for a sponge.
Since the unit will have to be checked often, value is low.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

A humidifier should hold enough water to keep your guitar properly humidified for at least two or three days in a tight case. The previous Planet Waves Acoustic Guitar Humidifier did just that: it even lasted three-to-five days. This new model is a ripoff. It's dry in a day. No exaggeration: I've had five--took 'em all back. Going on a weekend away? Your guitar will be bone dry all but one of the days you're gone. This is a piece of junk. It's a sponge in a box! For thirteen bucks? Don't waste your money. A slice of apple will last longer & be more effective. Cheaper, too.

You need to use something like this in order to keep the wood from drying out when you are using your heater in winter. It also makes good sense to use it in summer when you are running your air conditioning. (Air conditioners are dehumidifiers, which means they work for the most part by removing the high humidity which is present with the hot days. You know , when the heat makes you and everything else sweat sticky sweat.) Old timers would cut up an apple and put a half in at a time. Actually that works well until the fruit flys get into the case.

Anyway, this is a reliable and simple way to protect your acoustic guitar from cracking.

My 1972 Ovation was always fine in Phoenix but up here in Flagstaff at a dry 7000 feet it started to show that I had neglected it. Ovation cases don't have much loose room for other types of humidifiers and getting a plastic bag and sponge into the sound hole was problematic. This works fine, easy in, easy out. My top is coming back into form. This guitar has seen me through more life than anyone else. I'd like to keep it.

I bought 2 of these for Ukulele. It works for my Tenor but is a bit too big for my Concert. You need a sound hole at least 2 1/2 inches in diameter and a depth of instrument of about 3 inches and smaller and it won't fit. It is easy to use and works well with nothing wet touching the instrument and tuning seems to last much longer.

I got one of these for my Epiphone Masterbilt. Nothing fancy here, it just does what it's supposed to do, which is all I wanted. Easy access to the sponge and there are two little grooves on each side of the plastic case that secure it to the middle 2 strings and it stays in place nicely. I suspect some of the reviews complaining about the sponge getting moldy quickly did not use distilled water (it specifically says on the back of the package to only use distilled water). I bought a gallon and I reckon that will last me for a few years. If you have a solid wood acoustic I would recommend picking one of these up as it could prevent heaps of problems to your axe in the future, especially if you live in a really dry climate.

Follow the instructions, use common sense, ask questions if you're unsure and this inexpensive device will keep your acoustic guitar adequately humidified during the heating season when the air gets dry.
This is simple to use. You must: use distilled water; don't overfill it and check it often until you get a feel for water consumption. Bear in mind that this is designed to work while the guitar is in a closed case.
The reason I use this type of device is because it does not come in contact with anything on the guitar, it is suspended in the sound hole between the 3rd & 4th strings. Simple design & effective.

this device is well-designed, but made of flimsy plastic; and the clip-ons can break easily. fortunately, it's wide enough to exert sufficient pressure to hold it between the springs without them.

the price is absurd. get a pack of sponges, cut 'em to size, punch some holes in a few small ziplock bags, and make a few of your own.
