I was a dedicated Dean Markley Blue Steel player, but recently switched to these based on a saleman's recommendation. They look great, but more importantly add that deep tone I was looking for (I play a Jackson JS3 Concert Bass which already has a deep tone). They do wear in places where the pick and fingers strike, but this has not changed their sound. And did I mention that they look sick on a Red Quilt bass with black hardware?

My Ibanez Protege came with Elixirs which I loved, but when it came time to replace them, I bought a set of these DR Black Beauties instead. Boy, do I wish I had not done that. Here's why:1. The black coating will come off/wear off and be noticable in a few weeks, even if you play with your fingers and not a pick.2. I am now afraid to clean my strings with rubbing alcohol, or anything, less it accelerate the black coating's demise.3. If you do any kind of sliding between notes when you play, such as is heard in the song Badge by Cream, you can literally burn your finger with the heat generated by the black coating and the friction of the slide. It's an unusual side effect that does not happen with the Elixirs.4. These strings look cool, sound fine, but the Elixirs are better strings for the same price and last longer.I am a bassist with 35 years experience, who normally plays classic rock, rock or jazz with RW strings.Iwish I had never bought this brand, but had purchased the Elixir Nanoweb strings instead. They're outstanding strings.

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 4-String Bass Strings:

I've probably played bass as much as most of you readers and changed more strings along the way. Over the past dozen years have pretty much rotated between Roto Sound and D'Addario Nickel. For the most part, the DR is where I've landed and gratefully so. "Bass" and "mid" tones are easy to come by with any string. Character, brightness, ring and the right anount of sustain is a different matter. The DR Black Beauties offer just as much of the tonal characteristics as the aforementioned round wound strings and with the added bonus of cutting down on string noise and left hand nerve-ending pains. If long life in bass strings is your primary goal then you probably should switch to trombone but the Black Beauties do seem to hang in there thru many sweaty summertime gigs. Yes, the Nano Web design will last longer with even less string noise however from a tonal point-of-view, I'd rate Elixers slightly ahead of bungee cords.

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 4-String Bass Strings:

I have played since 83' but have never traversed into the world of bass strings besides typical nickel or steel strings. They sound great. I then bought a new bass and broke a string tuning it up. It was a black Warwick Vampyre. Went in search of new strings and found DR Black Beauties. Wow - I am happy I did. I now have them on my Dark Lord and my Thumb. Incredible black shinning appearance and great tone. Somewhere between full rounds and flats. I say that only because they are coated which dull's the tone just a bit. But for metal it's a compliment actually because you can sound heavy with a smaller string. I love these and will most likely never play anything else! Enjoy....

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 4-String Bass Strings:

These string sound amazing and really hold their tone for quite a long time. I bought a set and played 10-12 hours per week for two months and they still sounded good. As far as the coating coming off, you'll notice it where the strings touch the frets or if you're not careful when putting through the saddle. The other complaint is the pain cause by "sharp" edges when sliding and well it's true. Just be sure to slide where your calluses are and you'l be fine. The ultimate goal is tone and these really deliver!

These are my personal favorite strings. On top of just being flat out sexy, these strings sound fantastic. My professor reccodmended these to me, I had my doubts but I was NOT disappointed. I'm playing every day for hours, the last time I strung my bass was almost 4 months ago and they still sound brand spankin' new!

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 4-String Bass Strings:

Fitted a new set on to my Warwick Streamer bass and the sound was awful. The G string was totally dead, the D string brighter but still not as bright as my previous set which were years old. The A string was again dull but not as dull as the G string and the E string was similar to the A string. All told a very disappointing experience. DR need to check their QC these string were all over the place in terms of tone consistency. Now I have to go to the hassle of getting my money refunded. What a nightmare!
