Bought a set of these for the bridge and the HZ H4A for the neck of my Dean Dave Mustaine Angel of Deth II Zero. They are simply amazing! They sound better than my Synyster Custom with Seymor Duncan Invaders. Just everything is perfect, the tone, the highs/lows, clean/distorted, whatecer you wanna throw at them they can handle! Installion was too easy, just remove old hardware and simply plug in the new. It couldn't be any more simple. By far the best pick ups I've used and not to mention they're affordable.

Came stock with my ESP Custom Shop Scythe, the Alexi Laiho signature model. I'm not impressed with the pickup at all, especially for such a high-end guitar. The sound is similar to a Duncan JB that has been castrated. It has nice distortion and zero noise, decent attack, but compared to the EMG 81 and Duncan JB, it comes off like a stock mid-range guitar pickup.I have EMG actives and Seymour Duncans, I HIGHLY suggest spending the extra dollars for either of these opposed to the H4.The only Positive I have to say about the H4 is the fact that it is passive, no worry over a battery and its just straight up plug and play.I will be replacing the H4 with an active 81

"a serious alternative to the 81\85 set"

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

I bought the EMG H4\H4A passive set looking for a better alternative to the 81\85 active set. It took a while but eventually I found these great pickups! I've played the active set for over two years and have a good ear for its strengths and weaknesses.

I was looking to retain the essentially great tone of the active set but hopefully achieve these three main things. 1)Lose the lower mid-range frequency "growl" of the actives which was just too aggressive for the original hard rock\metal I play. 2)Decrease the overly compressed feeling of the actives which just felt choked at times(you can add compression via amp or pedal but you can't take it away). 3)Increase the tonal versatility of the pickups as the active set were just so "ON" with little ability to back off gain via volume on guitar or distortion knob on amp.

I'm happy to say I've achieved all three things here. Guitarists who love the 81\85 set but want far more ability to shape their sound themselves will love these pickups.

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

i got an epiphone les paul nightfall that came with these stock with coil taps. i love them the bridge can get everything from metalcore mania to punk. While if you split the neck and turn the tone up you get a great fat clean sound. One final thing is at least in my guitar a little on the tone knob goes a long way so you dont need to be at zero or ten all he time.

      Similar to the 81

      By Mad_axeman

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

The H4 has a tone similar to it's active twin the famous 81. There is a bit more high end on tap here,(at least in a 25.5 inch scale bolt-on with a floyd--I'm sure it would sound a little warmer in a 24 3/4 scale set neck guitar) but overall it has that tight, focused tone that the 81 is known for, with a slightly extended frequency range. You also get plenty of output for driving your amp.Harmonics jump off the fretboard easily although its just slightly more difficult to pull those Zakky low E-string pinches if thats your thing. I personally enjoy the active 81 sound, as I have been using the active EMG's in most of my guitars since the mid 80's. I have recently been experimenting with many different passives in some of my guitars, but I always end up comparing the tones to that of my trusty 81's. The 81 always wins. If you like the sound of the 81 you can pretty much get there with the passive H4. The H4 is a passive pickup and it will behave as such, but if you're dead set against actives for whatever reason or if changing a 9 volt battery every 3 years or so in an active equipped guitar is just too bothersome, the passive h4 may be just the ticket. It seems funny to me that after trying out so many passives from all the big manufacturers that the one that rates at the top of my list just happens to be made by the company that is most known for their active pickups. Give it a try!

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

I used these pickups exclusively for over two and a half years. They are absolutely sick. The clean tones work equally wel in both neck and bridge positions, and are have the depth, clarity, and punch to cover just about any style of music. As for distortion, they are articulate and powerful, with a sick crunch that many other pickups only wish they had. Combine a set of these with your favorite equalizer and distortion and you're set man. All in all, if it weren't for the X-Series pickups I would have stayed with these forever.

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

I play everything from metal to gypsy jazz and i needed a pickup that could do it all. I bought my fist Hz4 back in 2007 and ive been using them ever since. I have it installed in all my guitars now and would suggest it to everyone looking to get the most out of their guitar without having to break the back .

        bottom line is :
metal you get the crunch, attack, and stustaine.

Blues you get the mellow warmth and rounded tone.

Jazz players you get that snap and brightness on the highends.

        best bang for your buck!

I bought a goth explorer that has a set of these EMG h4 pickups, and they are terrible. They are without a doubt noiseless, but sadly they are also TONELESS! There is no bite, no cut, and no tone. The cleans are not that clean and the dirtys are not dirty. I would go for a set of Dimario D Activators or even gibson pickups before buying a set of these.

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

Hello Everyone: the biggest mistake is comparing this pickup to an EMG 81 or 85, there is no comparison, 81's and 85's are active with a battery booster which changes the tone a lot. This pickup can be compared more or less to a high output PAF crossed with a dimarzio super distortion, it has some good tones, but it can be mean if you know how to push it.First off do not use .047 capacitors with this pickup, it will make it muddy and sound garbled.use the old rule of thumb .022 for the capacitors.this does make a big difference in tone.I installed this pickup in the neck with the H3 in the bridge of a Ibanez ART100, and it sounds great, clean it has that PAF type tone but when you distort it, it has that nice classic rock tone.if you want a really high output heavy metal pickup, this is not it, stick to the active emg's for that, but if you want something for classic rock or hard rock, this pickup will help fit the bill.

This is a very good pickup for the money, they are a bit on the "hot" side but otherwise excellent, the sound is vastly improved over stock pickups, the sustain is a lot better and once you get everything set for them they are very quiet when you want them to be quiet.

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

About a month ago I put the H4 and H4A in my Ibanez S520EX, in a word....amazing! What a difference, it was like getting a new guitar. I play with lots of distortion but, I tried them clean to see how they sounded that way and they are just awesome. They are incredible for metal but, I believe you could get any tone you desire with these in your axe. A couple weeks later I put the 81/85 set in my Schecter C-1+, I figured that if these are this good the 81/85's would probably have me wetting myself. The truth is, these really are just as good. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret getting the actives because they really are nice but, I really don't see how they're $70 nicer than these. Getting the pots and stuff with the 81/85's is nice but, probably not a necessity with the HZ's. Let me explain, for example: I read a review about the S520EX where the guy was complaining about the volume pot not fading the volume but just cutting it, something I had noticed in mine. After I put these HZ's in the volume fades perfectly, and I used my old pots. So, it wasn't the pots, it was the pickups causing the problem. So as I said, you probably don't really need the new pots anyway. If you want that killer EMG tone but don't want to dump two bills plus on pickups these are definitely the way to go. I was a little bit skeptical of other people saying they are just as good, I guess I figured they would say that anyway because these are the ones they have. I have them both, and both guitars have the same body wood as well, (mahogany). In my humble opinion they really are.

This is a great pickup! I paired it in the bridge position with a Seymour Duncan SH-1 '59 in the neck, and this thing sings! Great tone, awesome high end, it will pick up anything! Tapping is so easy with this, it is insane! Great for anything, especially if you are playing something harder, and with distortion, this will make you sound amazing!

            Emg H4/H4A Passive

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

A solid EMG product but do not expect the same hard-driving tone of the active EMG's. This will get you a good heavy tone, clear, resonant etc... But not as rich and overdriven as say the Seymour Duncan SH-6B. I like EMG's but with these HZ series pickups I would say to stick to the common open coil brands. Many companies make harder hitting picks ups than the H4/H4A. Not to mention any standard open coil type pick up will most certainly get you a better clean tone than the H4/H4A. They look good in your guitar but I just feel one can do a little better with an open coil pick up. The H4 just doesn't seem to deliver all that exciting a tone.

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

These are my favorite pickups on the planet and I love them to death! I have played just about every pickup out there and these are amazing! Perfect medium between actives and passives, these are the best of both worlds. I mostly play Christian Rock, Metal, soft rock, worship, and many others. BUY THESE!!!...and if you regret getting these, then you simply have bad taste and shouldn't be playing guitar at all, with all do respect. They're are plenty of amazing pickups out there, and choosing others over the HZs is fine, but if you think that these are "bad" pickups, then you are just wrong and in denial.

As a replacement for the atrocious duncan designed stock PU in my schecter, I dropped an EMG H4 in the bridge. This pickup pretty much does everything I want it to do. This is a moderate output pickup that sounds really good when paired with a high output pickup in the neck. The sound is very balanced and gives your guitar some balls. The H4 can get some good tones when it comes to recording. The only word that I can think to use to describe the high gain tones is FUN. This PU can crank out some good quality tones for recording projects. It's 5-wire quick connect allowed me to put a coil tap on it, so it's very versatile. The H4 does everything I need it to do, and I can say that I am not disappointed.

I had recently purchased a Jackson Dinky "DXMG" that came with a pair of H-3`s and decided to swap out the one in the bridge for an H-4. After installing, I plugged in to a Line 6 Spyder lV amp set to "metal/enter sandman" and was completely blown away by the tone. The mids are scooped and it`s all bass & treble. It also has ample power output for a passive pick up and the low end riffing w/ palm muting is great, and the high end as well. It picks up everything! I`m happy...

Comments about EMG H4 Passive Electric Guitar Humbucker Pickup:

I own both the active 81(best lead pickup available) and the HZh4. Honestly, its the passive version of the 81, don't be fooled! Both have their pros and cons. No, the HZ isn't as good as the 81 in lead applications... But realize this, the 81 has ABSOLUTELY NO body or definition when it comes to actual chords. In a ten point scoring system the HZ would get a 9.5 in chord definition, a 10 in attack, an 8 in lead ability, and don't forget, you can also switch over to single coil tones with the ease of a simple switch. Though my passive HZ has enough output to satisfy my harmonic and lead needs, at heart, I rely on complicated chords. that's where EMG HZ (h4) pickups shine. Sum: The HZ is the chord worthy version of the 81. Hell, get em both.
