OVERVIEW

Try the new and improved slinky feel and fat tone.

Ernie Ball 2736 Cobalt Regular Slinky Bass Strings for 5-string bass are round-wound for maximum clarity and serious punch. The Cobalt Regular Slinky 5-String set is clearly an improvement on its classic nickel-wound counterpart giving the player increased sustain, clarity and output. In addition, they resist sweat and moisture better and have unmatched flexibility when compared to other nickel wound strings. Cobalt is the most magnetically active string alloy on the planet and attracts the magnets in your pickups more than any other string.

"Ernie Ball Cobalt Bass Strings are the new standard! Bigger, better tone, sustain and volume. Finally a real innovation with strings." - Randy Jackson
"I can't believe how much low end I get out of Ernie Ball Cobalt Bass Strings. Also, the high end is super crisp, seemingly with more definition. Unbelievable." - Dave Larue

All Ernie Ball strings are precision manufactured to the highest standards and the most exacting specs to assure consistency, optimum performance and long life. Made in the USA.

I thought I'd give these Ernie Ball Cobalt strings a try on this new 5-string bass i picked up, and man was i pleasantly surprised! Up until now the only bass strings i liked for fretted bass were Rotosound RB45s - to MY ear, all others i had tried lacked a vibrancy and beautiful ringing presence that the Rotosounds gave me ..until i tried these Cobalts. Now I haven't done an A/B comparison between the Rotos and the Cobalts to see how they compare to each other. But i CAN say that i am VERY pleased with the Cobalts.
Features? They're bass strings, a core of metal with wire windings. How many features are possible? These do have nice clarity and low end as well, a very vibrant and LIVE sound.
Quality seems top notch as always with Ernie Ball. I've never had a bad Ernie Ball string. Then again, i've never gotten a defective string from any manufacturer. The cobalt plating or whatever they do, does seem to make for a REALLY nice sound, I've only had them on a few weeks, so i can't tell you if they'll go dead and lose that great sound in 3/4/5/... weeks. Time will tell. But so far they still have that 'new string' sound. They didn't require much stretching at ALL, it was an UNUSUALLY small amount of stretching required. So that's very handy, instead of having to mess around retuning cuz it went flat yet again. These just settled into place an were ready to go. I suppose this fact should have gone under features.
Since i haven't compared them side by side with the Rotosounds i usually use on fretted bass, I can't say. The Rotosounds are 2/3 the price of the Cobalts. But the cobalts do also seem to have a smoother feel. I think the Cobalts are a fine value though. They're not overpriced for what you get.

I first got these in a Sam Ash store when I saw that they were made of cobalt. I've had these strings for less than a month and have really liked them. They have a great punchy tone which sounds great to me. But, while tuning DOWN to C standard from E standard(only tuning the E,A,D, and G strings) to practice with my band, the D string broke. I was so surprised I thought I accidentally tuned up, but I would never do that. I had to replace it with regular Nickel strings from my 4-string. Not a week later, I was tuning down once again and the G string broke. For such a price and so little life, these strings were a bust.

Great strings to fix a loose B

By Eric Pratt

from Undisclosed

Comments about Ernie Ball 2736 Cobalt Regular Slinky 5-String Electric Bass Strings:

The Cobalt Slinky 5 set has shortly become one of my favorite of bass strings. As of late I had been using another brand for my boutique basses but recently bought an inexpensive 5 string to tinker and mod. The B string was somewhat loose and floppy feeling. These strings are known for having slightly more tension to them so I decided to try them, I'm glad I did. The B string is now tight and feels as comfortable as the E and A strings.
They sound very punchy and articulate on the low end as well. If you've seen the ad videos online with Randy Jackson then you've heard what the company claims this string can do... well it's true. The string is more sensitive and reacts stronger than standard strings and sounds great doing it.
I'll be buying more sets for my boutique basses.

Comments about Ernie Ball 2736 Cobalt Regular Slinky 5-String Electric Bass Strings:

The EBMM Cobalts 5 are the real deal. Yes, they're close to twice the price compared to the Nickel Slinkys but you're getting so much more in clarity, punch and life. Putting these on my Bongo5 has required tweaking in my amp settings as well as adjustments to my compressor. Not a bad thing by any means. If you prefer a punchy, ballsy bass sound, I highly recommend these strings. I believe you'll get your moneys worth.

Comments about Ernie Ball 2736 Cobalt Regular Slinky 5-String Electric Bass Strings:

The Cobalts have a unique sound and feel much different than any bass string Ive played, and Ive played a Lot of bass strings! They have a very tight feel, the tension is higher than most strings of the same gage Ive played. They still feel comfortable, just a bit stiff. The tone is almost shocking at first, the lows and highs jump out, very lively. The bottom is very full, the top shinny without being harsh. The issue is the lack of mid-range, they have a scooped sound to them with an aggressive edge. Thou I do slap and do cut my mids back at times I dont want that sound all the time! I love their low end but the lack of mids takes all the definition of the bass out of the mix. I liken it to an inexpensive active bass, sounds ok on its own, then you put it in a band situation and cant get it to sit in a mix. That said I do feel they have a place, they might do great in some metal applications, particularly with some overdrive. A solo bass or bass feature where the bass doesnt have to compete with keys, guitars etc might work also. I had to pull them off my main bass, just not working, put them on a another bass with much the same results, they were to expensive to trash.

Comments about Ernie Ball 2736 Cobalt Regular Slinky 5-String Electric Bass Strings:

I was never able to get exactly the sound I wanted out my bass and amp, I put these on, with no adjustments, I got the sound I'd been looking for. They are bit brighter than I'm used to, but I like them a lot. I don't think I'll use a different kind of strings ever again.
The quality seems amazing, just like every other product from Ernie Ball, never gotten bad strings from them.
Worth WAY more than they cost.

Comments about Ernie Ball 2736 Cobalt Regular Slinky 5-String Electric Bass Strings:

I use these on my Music Man Stingray 5. I go back and forth between these and the nickel strings occasionally, and the Cobalts are definitely the better pick. The output is significantly better than any string I've used. Lots of clarity and the highs ring through without any weird overtones like some strings have. I noticed no one has really reviewed the actual feel of the string yet, which is weird. Compared to the nickel strings, these feel a little more rigid. Not a bad thing, honestly. I prefer it over the nickel feel. The price is definitely more than worth what EB have made here.

Comments about Ernie Ball 2736 Cobalt Regular Slinky 5-String Electric Bass Strings:

I've been playing bass professionally for about 9 years now. I have used many different brands of strings, but I always come back to Ernie Ball strings. I figured I'd give these a shot because one of my heroes RANDY JACKSON endorses them and uses them himself. I was immediately impressed when I played on them on my Fender 5 string Standard Jazz. There's no need to break these in like other strings, these babies are ready to go! Will purchase again.

I tried 2 sets of these strings, with the first set,my D string broke near the machine head while down tuning. This was less than 2 weeks after I got them. I wrote to ernie ball and explained what happened and they were good about it and sent me a new set. Those did the same thing, same string but they lasted about 1 month this time....
