Comments about Evans G12 Clear Batter Drumhead:
This was a disappointment. After using Pinstripes on my Rockstar kit (power tom sizes) for decades I started yearning for a brighter sound so I started investigating some options. All things that I read and heard pointed to the G12: single ply to brighten the sound, 12mm ply to be durable.
But after putting one on, and tuning it the way I have tuned my other toms, well... the darned thing sounds just like a pinstripe! But it dents! Although I play metal I don't consider myself a hard hitter, instead more of a speed player and I used the Vic First SD4 combo stick, which falls more in the realm of jazz or possibly fusion.
So I guess my search continues...
Don't get me wrong, this is a well-made, nice sounding head. But it was not what I was expecting or suitable for my application. I would consider the G14 to (possibly) eliminate the issue with denting, but I'm not convinced the sound will be an improvement and it'll likely be harder to tune.
