OVERVIEW

For that big, fat, wet, '70s sound.

Another Evans exclusive, Hydraulic heads are heavy-duty, twin-ply drumheads that have an oil-filling between the two plies to greatly reduce drum resonance and, at the same time, emphasize the fundamental and lower overtones of the drum.

Hello, these heads are just great, I have them in my 12 and 13 rack toms and I love them!! You just gotta know how to use them properly. For example if you have them on top as batters, then you must have single ply lightweight resonators in the bottom, otherwise you will take off all the sustain and tone of the drum. It's all about balance. If you combine the two ply muffled Hydraulic head on one side with a single ply clear thin head in the other you will keep the perfect amount of sustain and tone and still have a fat sound that is what most drummers look for when purchasing Hydraulics. It doesn't matter if its on top or the resos, as long as you combine them, but if you put Hydraulics or any other double ply pre-muffled head on the batter and also the reso side you will totally kill the sustain and tone of your drum and it will sound dead like a cardboard box. Apart from this is the TUNING aspect. You can have the perfect combination of heads but if they're not well tuned they will SOUND BAD ALWAYS!! So remember: tune the top head lower than the reso head in order to take off sustain from the drum, the higher the reso head is from the batter head, the more sustain it will take from the drum. Also another way is If you tune both heads at the same pitch. That way it will give you the maximum sustain from the drum.

And the third point is that you have to know the type of wood of your drumset and the thickness of it because that also influences on the sound of the drum. Thicker shells give less tone than thin shells so that means if you have a thick shell drum you might not want to put Hydraulics on it. They suit better on thin shell drums wich give the best musical tone. The thinner the shell the more tone you will hear from the drum. So please take in account all this factors before choosing your drumheads. Now knowing all this you can play with it to get your own Great Drum Sound!! And remember it's all about balance and personal taste!! Cheers!!

Like all evans heads, I think the quality is great. However, I am not in a classic rock / 70's cover band, so this is not the head for me- if that makes sense. Very little sustain and sort of a wet splat sound with lower tunings. This is sort of like a pinstriped head on steroids. I went to EC2 and am much happier with the more musical sound they give.

Comments about Evans Hydraulic Glass Drumhead:

These hydraulic glass heads are a great choice for those who want wet attack with depth. I recently purchased a drum set with toms that rang out for days. This is excellent for live performances but at practice and in recording it's overkill. I've tried the hydraulic blue on the low tom and it was like pounding a washtub, way too dead for my taste. I thought I'd give the glass a try since they're known for brighter attack and it turned out to be just that.
Tuned high they still have a bright long sustain for a dampened head. Tuning these batter heads low and the resonant heads very low gave me just the right chest thumping sound for heavier styles. They take some breaking in but are very durable and perfect for small venues and practice spaces. If you have a kit that doesn't resonate a lot or don't like any muffling in your tuning, these aren't for you.
For others who want to try the Evans Hydraulic line, I own them all and are basically categorized as:
Glass - Open; Blue - Muffled; Black - Dead.

Comments about Evans Hydraulic Glass Drumhead:

I didn't purchase these heads from this site, but I felt like I was obligated to write a review about these heads due to the wide variety of reviews.

I was skeptical myself of these heads before I purchased them as well.

Don't listen to the nay-sayers. They say they have no "tone" and they sound "boxy". These people do NOT know how to tune a drum!

Straight out the box, tuned just a tad higher than I'd normally have them sound amazing even on my 10" tom.

It does exactly what it claims. It lowers the sustain of the drum so you don't have a long, drawn out note (even with both heads tuned to the same note, it decays really fast). This is great for and rock/pop/hardcore music because your note will cut and then get out of the way ASAP.

The attack is accentuated a lot and I find that if TUNED CORRECTLY, you'll hear the tone of the drum easily. They don't sound boxy AT ALL.

I think I finally found the sound that I've been looking for.

I got these a month ago for my black Tama Stagestar 10", 12" and 14" toms and my 16" gray Enforcer second floor tom, and I have to say, this was perhaps the best purchase I've ever made for the drums. They have more ring than the EC2s that I had used before, but still have a nice, short sustain. Even the plywood Enforcer floor tom sounds amazing with a Hydraulic Glass batter head. I will never use any other batter head for my toms. I most highly recommend this drum head.

Comments about Evans Hydraulic Glass Drumhead:

I have been using Evans Hydraulics for 2 decadesI have tried others way back when, but nothing sastified my ears like the thick & rich & punchy sound that I hear with little or no overtones depending on the tuning and size of the shells.I use larger drums 14x12 rack, 16x14 rack(used as floor tom), and a 16x18 floor. Hydraulics really let the power of these drums shine through; I tune low so the audience can feel the thunder!! Every one hears the sound that comes out of their drums differently. I happen to like the thud sound of the 70's & 80's before all the techno stuff that's why I only use HydraulicsMy drums, my choice. Try em for a big sound!!

Comments about Evans Hydraulic Glass Drumhead:

Okay so I've read the other reviews and I like how they all contradict each other. Basically I would recommend you try these heads first. They are not resonant and they eliminate over tones, but that's exactly what I want. They don't fit everyone's taste though. I use them in my pop-punk/hardcore band and they're perfect. I don't know how they would sound with jazz though, I don't play much jazz.

I have played drums for about 8 years now. I do really well actually. I have gotten better at tuning and I have used REMO Weather King Pinstripes,Weatherking Coated,Black Dots and Remo Weatherking Power Strokes..which I really liked. But my local drum shop recommended these Evans Hydraulic heads for a Vistalite kit I have and they worked really well!! Beautiful tone. Nice and thick and just the right ring. Can't say enough good things about them. Their all I really want to use now. And on my 24" kicks I use the Evans Emad 2. My Drum sizes are 10,12,14,16 Floor 18 Floor all with Hydraulics. Even on my Maple kit the Hydraulics sound the best for me. Highly Recommended.

I do not call myself a drummer nor do I say I can play. I dabble and being self taught for 7 years. With that being said I believe Evans Hydraulic Glass heads are by far the best heads I have used to date. I have them on all of my Toms as well as my kick. I personally think the have a much better sound than my Remo heads. I do not change heads very often because they last with tuning. After 3 years I finally broke through my first layer on my 10" tom and believe it or not it still sounds great. I will not buy any other head. So from a novice point of view...they are the sound of great rock n roll...now all I have to do is get better. Then I will be able to say I can Play.

I generally use G2's on my 8"-14" toms, but have an 18" floor tom that I Occasionally add. This head decreases the rumble on the 18", and helps craft a nice punchy, controlled tone, making the 18" very useable.

In the past, I've used hydraulics on all of my toms to help curb the overall volume of the kit and it works quite nicely.

I do not recommend them for general studio work. They are designed to eliminate the "warm" frequencies, shorten the sustain, and accentuate the attack and fundamental tone.

Comments about Evans Hydraulic Glass Drumhead:

Evans' description of this head is "deep" "fat" sound that became popular in the 70's, and as an added benefit, the oil in between plies helped to smooth out tuning inconsistentcies. In my experience, the heads are simply so extremely muffled due to that oil in between the plies that not only does it make the tuning more difficult, but the sound is akin to wacking a piece of cardboard because these have NO sustain. Not getting a "note", just the attack. Solid construction, but I really can't think of anytime or anyone who would play with these heads on their kit, unless it's that cardboard muffled "splat" sound that you're after.

I put the hydraulics on my 35 + year old Rogers set about 10 years ago. I play mostly for my church praise band and the deep tone is perfect for our smaller sanctuary. And in this setting I didn't have to buy a plexi-glass panel kit to condense the sound. I love the feel and the beefy sound quality of these heads, especially with meatier drum sticks.

Comments about Evans Hydraulic Glass Drumhead:

I wrote a pretty negative review for these heads about 6 years ago. I thought I was great at tuning, but I really wasn't. And that was the reason I couldn't seem to get a good sound out of the head. Well I went to my local music store looking for an Evans 13" EC2 Tom Head (for that pre-muffled sound I like). They didn't have it, but I stumbled upon this head in that size, and long story short, I bought it. I took it home, put it on the drum, and WOW. I take it back, these heads are quite good overall. If you like your drums to ring out a lot, these may not be for you, but if you want a nice fat attack and just enough resonance, these are a great choice. The key is to not tune them super high or super low. Anywhere in between works (medium low to medium is my favorite spot!). Anyway I was wrong to give these a low review...they're definitely good heads! Recommended! :)

These heads are alright, but I personally wouldn't use them for any metal/rock type stuff. I've experimented and I think Country music would be better for these things.

This is a great classic. I use them strictly for toms. A lot of people don't like hydraulics, but I find that those people don't know what to expect out of a head like this. These heads have a ton of attack and almost no overtones. I paired mine with G1 clears as resos. With anything coated or thin you're likely going to eliminate your resonance completely. The lack of overtones makes the drums seem quieter. I like what these heads do for my old drum set. I've used the blue in the past but I got glass this time. I've read there is a difference in the thickness of the black hydraulics so be aware of what you're getting if you decide to buy hudraulic heads.

My kit is a really low end kit that came with some paper thin single ply heads. I put the hydraulics on and could tell a major difference. I needed a head that was very volume-controlled, and these were it. They tuned easily as well, which is characteristic of most major brand heads. If you're looking to bring some life to your low-end drumset and/or need to tone the volume down a bit, try 'em out.
