The fat 50's are THE Holy grail. Once you put a set on one of your strats you'll be eagerly waiting for the next sale so you can buy more. I have 8 Strats, ranging from 60's through 2012 and these pickups smoke them all. All! The guitar with these on them has become the one I compare all of my other Strats to and I always go back to the Fat 50's.

The bottom end is nice and fat but articulates well with no mud; the high end is stratty but is not brittle or thin like so many so-called "vintage" pups. They are responsive and nice and poppy like a good Strat should be. I am extremely fussy about my tone and have gone through a lot of pickups. These quench my thirst.

Blues, rock, country, the tone is laways spot on for what you need. David Gilmour has got nothing on these pups. Buy them. You will look back on it as one of the best decisions you ever made. You won't want to put the guitar down.

This is the second set of newly made Custom Shop pick-ups from Fender I bought, the first being a set of Custom '69s by the heavily-hyped A. Ybarra, and they both exhibit the same rush-to-ship flaws; ill fitting cover clearance and momentary dip in the potting wax instead of the standard 15 minute soak. This leaves the fragile tag leads subject to easy breakage (and they did on the '69s) rendering the whole high-dollar set unservicable. The replacement set Fat '50s here reviewed were taped by me to prevent the same fate. They will need after-market potting to finish what Fender failed to do. I see less quality here than with Fenders' mid-grade factory products off-the-shelf, and this should not be. Never again, and never ANYTHING from the Fender Custom Shop. It's a waste of my money and yours.

Neither

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

I own a 1959 Stratocaster with original pups and figured these would give me a similar sound in my Relic. They don't. They have an annoying upper midrange squawk, and my originals are fatter than these. I put an SSL-1 in the neck, an SSL-1 rev in the middle, and an SSL-3 in the bridge of my Relic, and guess what? It sounds better than my "59's.

Classic Stratocaster Tone

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

I have a strat with Custom Shop 69 pickups and I love the sound. With my other strat I decided to try these to get a different, yet classic sound. These pickups gave me that and so much more. They can give me a clean blues tone and with overdrive they are simply amazing. Perfect for everything from Buddy Holly to Hendrix. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for that classic stratocaster sound.

True Vintage Tone

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

I put these in a project surf guitar because I wanted that vintage 60's surf sound, and they really did the trick. All five pickup positions are clear, usable, and totally vintage. The Fender 54's and 69's are great too, but they didn't have that rich vintage sound I was looking for. These are great for rockabilly, twanging, blues, classic rock, and surf music, but I wouldn't spin them for hard rock and heavy metal is plain out.Plug these into a Fender Twin Reverb and prepare for a 40 year time warp.

Awesome Pickups

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

You have to hear these pickups to believe them. The tones you can get in all five selector switch configurations is unreal. I put mine in a Made in Mexico Strat that had been set up by a technician (strings, action, etc.) to my specifications and the pickup height adjusted to vintage strat pickup specs and my budget axe sounds amazing. You can go from classic rock, gritty blues, and that wonderful clean strat tone with almost any amp and pedal. I don't think they can handle today's metalhead, but everything up until that point can be covered with these pickups and the proper rig. Don't believe the review below that reads these are a "fool's purchase" (that guy sounds too anal to play guitar, maybe he should try the cello). You are foolish if you pass these up. They can only make you (along with your personal touch) sound better. For God's sake, stop reading and buy them!!!

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

The discription that fender uses is exactly on when describing these pickups. I have three strats with Texas Specials in one, Delta Tones in the other, and the third has the Fat 50's. I love them all and each has a very specific sound. To compare the three, the Fat 50's are rounder sounding with clear classic bell tones...but not thin sounding like other vintage pickups. I use the word rounder as opposed to Texas Specials which have a higher midrange and are noticeably different. Delta Tones are similar in that they are rounder sounding, but they are also darker and not as clear and bell like as the Fat 50's. All have their qulities in whatever music you play. Texas Specials are the best for blues, Fat 50's are best for rock'n'roll, and the Delta Tones are more Modern/contemporary Rock. I think the Fat 50's could be my favorite of the three...but I recommend the others as well.

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s pickups are tied for first place in my book. If you're looking for vintage Strat tone beefed up a bit, the two best sets are the CS Fat 50s and the CS 69s. I have tried all the Fender Custom Shop pickups and have to say these 2 kill. Texas Specials are great too but a bit too honky in the midrange. Custom 54s are a very accurate recreation of the early Strat tone (bell-like and chime but a bit on the thin side if you ask me). These Fat 50s just seem to hit the sweet spot tone wise. With hum cancelling in the 2 and 4 position I don't think there's anything not to like about this set. For the tone and vibe, the price is well worth it. I have owned many Strats over the years and my advice is to try these Fat 50s in whatever model of Strat you have. It'll sound better. Couldn't be happier!

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

I swapped out my stock pickups in my 50s strat with these and from the first moment I played them I noticed my guitar is now a monster! It instantly gave my strat a new life, and it really does sound straight out of the 50s now. These things don't just bark... they bite! The only down side to these is the hum on single selections. I have a boss NS2 that I let a friend borrow a couple years back because I didn't need it, I'm gonna have to track him down now. If you want your strat to sound like a canon, get these... but be mindful, its more of a challenge to control your guitar with these; don't buy if your looking to hide your mistakes.

These came with my 2014 American Standard Stratocaster.
Pure classic tone goodness.
From Norman Petty studio Buddy Holly tone through Hendrix and Dire Straits and everything in between.
If you want the tone that attracted you to the Stratocaster to begin with I recomend these pick ups without hesitation.
Fender hit it out of the park with these.
If your a Strat player do yourself a favor.

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

The Fat 50s were my first foray into DIY guitar improvement. Simply put, I can't believe the difference between my MiM stock pickups and these bad boys. Before installing the Fat 50s I rarely used my neck pickup (too muddy), but now the neck sounds, well, fat and creamy. You know Hendrix's sweet tone on his cover of "Born Under a Bad Sign?" That's the sound you get with the Fat 50s (my Blues Deluxe amp may help too). Utterly amazing and highly recommended.

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

I bought a fender relic 69 with the fat 50's. I plugged my new axe into my Marshall and wow. These pickups sound incredible clean and dirty - if your looking for that classic fender rock tone this is where it's at. I was worried about the hum and no doubt there is a bit with these beauties on the single level (the 2 and 4 switch have the reverse wound and they elimitate most hum) but its a just a bit and you can control it with the volume knob at high volumes. Overall I love the sound of these babies - Machine Gun never sounded so good from my finger tips...

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

The middle pick up is RWRP, which means noisless backplates do not work on it. These pickups rule except for the noise, I care not about it being
'part of the tone,' we all know it sucks. So, have any of you tried noiseless pickups, with regard to the middle pickup only, that can most closely resemble the sweet chime and bass response of the middle fat 50s? I changed the pickups on my strat for the YJMs, but left the middle, but the hum still bothers me even if I only use it for clean tones. Let me know, it is probably either SDuncan, or Fender.

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

I am shopping for a new back up strat around this price range. So I tried out the 50's PLayer Strat with these pickups in them and they sound great. I am hopefully buying a guitar and sticking these in them. They have really thick thick thick thick(I could say thick another hundred times) Like a SRV, Clapton, Hendrix tone. I really love it. Blues people will absolutely love it.

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

Well, I've been a Fender Man for lets see...27 years. I just love Fender Guitars and let me tell you, the Custom Shop Fat'50's are some great pups! Their found in the higher end Custom Shop guitars, not only that their in my Custom Strat as well! I love the fact that you keep vintage tone and add a FAT bottom end, it's Great! The quality of workmanship is a 10, the tone through my Vibro-King is a 10. My set up is standard, a 3-way switch, 250k pots, pups wired for no load tone middle pickup, From the Eric Johnson Wiring Schematic. For the great tone I soldered in an Angela 0.047 tin foil capacitor. Let me tell you, when you roll of the tone controls she breaks up nice and fat! These pups are some of the best made by Fender Custom Shop, If you purchase a set you won't be disappointed!

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

Great replacement for upgrading my MIM Fender Stratocaster. Even with the 9's on it it still sounds warmer. A change to tens will upgrade it more in terms of sounds resonance. I am not into hot pickups, that effect I can get that from my effects pedals or through a board for the most part. If you like your Fender MIM, you like the feel, color and action then these Fender Fat 50's may satisfy your urge to buy an American Standard. Save the difference and buy a decent Fender tube amp like a blues deluxe if you can, in my humble opinion. I like the results from the pickups. BTW, Musicians Friends has always been helpfuland professonal with thier products and service. I bought with confidence, they matched GC sale price.

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:

I replaced the pick-ups out of my 17 year old USA Stratocaster, With a maple neck.
The FAT 50's really brought the sound I needed. Cleaner and just a little brighter than the stock ones .The stock ones sounded ok, But the FAT 50's have more personality.
Combined with the maple neck the bridge pick-up is very Bright. Which I like. A rosewood neck may
be more mellow. But overall just great chimey twang. Perfect sound when driven hard through a small tube amp.
