The fat 50's are THE Holy grail. Once you put a set on one of your strats you'll be eagerly waiting for the next sale so you can buy more. I have 8 Strats, ranging from 60's through 2012 and these pickups smoke them all. All! The guitar with these on them has become the one I compare all of my other Strats to and I always go back to the Fat 50's.
The bottom end is nice and fat but articulates well with no mud; the high end is stratty but is not brittle or thin like so many so-called "vintage" pups. They are responsive and nice and poppy like a good Strat should be. I am extremely fussy about my tone and have gone through a lot of pickups. These quench my thirst.
Blues, rock, country, the tone is laways spot on for what you need. David Gilmour has got nothing on these pups. Buy them. You will look back on it as one of the best decisions you ever made. You won't want to put the guitar down.

This is the second set of newly made Custom Shop pick-ups from Fender I bought, the first being a set of Custom '69s by the heavily-hyped A. Ybarra, and they both exhibit the same rush-to-ship flaws; ill fitting cover clearance and momentary dip in the potting wax instead of the standard 15 minute soak. This leaves the fragile tag leads subject to easy breakage (and they did on the '69s) rendering the whole high-dollar set unservicable. The replacement set Fat '50s here reviewed were taped by me to prevent the same fate. They will need after-market potting to finish what Fender failed to do. I see less quality here than with Fenders' mid-grade factory products off-the-shelf, and this should not be. Never again, and never ANYTHING from the Fender Custom Shop. It's a waste of my money and yours.

Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:
I own a 1959 Stratocaster with original pups and figured these would give me a similar sound in my Relic. They don't. They have an annoying upper midrange squawk, and my originals are fatter than these. I put an SSL-1 in the neck, an SSL-1 rev in the middle, and an SSL-3 in the bridge of my Relic, and guess what? It sounds better than my "59's.
Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:
I put these in a project surf guitar because I wanted that vintage 60's surf sound, and they really did the trick. All five pickup positions are clear, usable, and totally vintage. The Fender 54's and 69's are great too, but they didn't have that rich vintage sound I was looking for. These are great for rockabilly, twanging, blues, classic rock, and surf music, but I wouldn't spin them for hard rock and heavy metal is plain out.Plug these into a Fender Twin Reverb and prepare for a 40 year time warp.
Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:
I have a strat with Custom Shop 69 pickups and I love the sound. With my other strat I decided to try these to get a different, yet classic sound. These pickups gave me that and so much more. They can give me a clean blues tone and with overdrive they are simply amazing. Perfect for everything from Buddy Holly to Hendrix. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for that classic stratocaster sound.
Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:
The Fat 50s were my first foray into DIY guitar improvement. Simply put, I can't believe the difference between my MiM stock pickups and these bad boys. Before installing the Fat 50s I rarely used my neck pickup (too muddy), but now the neck sounds, well, fat and creamy. You know Hendrix's sweet tone on his cover of "Born Under a Bad Sign?" That's the sound you get with the Fat 50s (my Blues Deluxe amp may help too). Utterly amazing and highly recommended.
Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:
I swapped out my stock pickups in my 50s strat with these and from the first moment I played them I noticed my guitar is now a monster! It instantly gave my strat a new life, and it really does sound straight out of the 50s now. These things don't just bark... they bite! The only down side to these is the hum on single selections. I have a boss NS2 that I let a friend borrow a couple years back because I didn't need it, I'm gonna have to track him down now. If you want your strat to sound like a canon, get these... but be mindful, its more of a challenge to control your guitar with these; don't buy if your looking to hide your mistakes.
Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:
Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s pickups are tied for first place in my book. If you're looking for vintage Strat tone beefed up a bit, the two best sets are the CS Fat 50s and the CS 69s. I have tried all the Fender Custom Shop pickups and have to say these 2 kill. Texas Specials are great too but a bit too honky in the midrange. Custom 54s are a very accurate recreation of the early Strat tone (bell-like and chime but a bit on the thin side if you ask me). These Fat 50s just seem to hit the sweet spot tone wise. With hum cancelling in the 2 and 4 position I don't think there's anything not to like about this set. For the tone and vibe, the price is well worth it. I have owned many Strats over the years and my advice is to try these Fat 50s in whatever model of Strat you have. It'll sound better. Couldn't be happier!
Comments about Fender Fat '50s Strat Pickup Set:
I bought a fender relic 69 with the fat 50's. I plugged my new axe into my Marshall and wow. These pickups sound incredible clean and dirty - if your looking for that classic fender rock tone this is where it's at. I was worried about the hum and no doubt there is a bit with these beauties on the single level (the 2 and 4 switch have the reverse wound and they elimitate most hum) but its a just a bit and you can control it with the volume knob at high volumes. Overall I love the sound of these babies - Machine Gun never sounded so good from my finger tips...
