I have played for years and own 9 guitars. My vintage guitars are stock but the rest are modded, as are my tube amps and pedals. I chase tone. I bought an FSR Strat and wanted to get that Texas blues sound - overdriven warmth with high-end bite. I tried some other brands and got the overdrive but they lacked depth, color and clarity. I bought and installed these Tex Mex pups a year ago after reading other reviews and found was I after. I also wired my guitar so that the mid pup tone pot controls the bridge pup (ala Jimmie Vaughan - move the pot's wire over one post on the switch), so I cut the treble off the bridge, and then got a professional setup. This guitar smokes! I can only echo what others have said: low-mid growl, smoky haunting tones and harmonics that jump off notes. Up the amp volume and cut the guitar volume for headroom, and you have vintage sounding highs, and Strat quack. Bottom line, these are the most versatile pickups I have on any of my Strats (stock '74, Custom Shop '69, '57/'62). At the current sale price, these are an absolute steal! It's ridiculous to spend more and not get what you're after (I know). Get 'em now!

Great Pickups

These pickups sound amazing! They have a little bite to them so if you like a little more aggressive fender tone these are for you.

Comments about Fender Tex Mex Pickups set of 3:

I've installed, recomended, and sold a load of these over the years. ALOT of guys think price tells them how good a pickup is , uhh , WRONG !These are overwound single-coils they are RWRP for hum cancelling in position #2 & #4 and alot of other companies do that but tag a BIG price tag on it. I've done much on-hand trial & error and $pent ALOT on buying high dollar boutique $tuff even winding my own by hand and can honestly tell ALL guitarists who love Strat's tone that these are a PERFECT upgrade for any $50 beater Crapocaster's or nicer MIM's and even the "S" word, Squires. I stuck my 1st set in a 1985 Kramer Pacer that came with 3 single-coils and an Original Floyd Rose from the factory, I can do pinch harmonics, dive bomb bends, tapping and anything any guy could do with humbuckers on this 10.12lb. monster with Tex-Mex pickups ! NO LIE ! Just buy a set and I KNOW you'll like them ! MUSICIANS FRIEND ROCKS AMERICA ONE NOTE AT A TIME !

Comments about Fender Tex Mex Pickups set of 3:

I own these in a Jimmie Vaughn stratocaster, and while I would typically go for a higher wound pickup like the Texas Specials by preference, the Tex-Mex pickups are actually quite good.

I would say they fall somewhere between the vintage strat pickups and Texas Specials in both output and tone, as they have notably louder midrange and highs than vintage strats, but are not quite as fat as Texas Specials. I would describe them as the do everything strat pickups.

The downside to these pickups is they can sound treble heavy when used with a thinner (typically higher gain) amplifier and be quite fussy with EQ settings.

The neck pickup offers a fat and smooth sound, and the middle pickup is a high point, as it doesn't thin out like many lower output single coils, and neither is it too overly twangy.

You can spend $150 to $300 dollers for strat pickups these days with variable difference. Or you can buy a set of Tex- Mex for $61 that sound just as good as most . Remember true tone is in your hands, ears and musical ability .Not just the gear you have .

    Awesome Pickups

Comments about Fender Tex Mex Pickups set of 3:

If you have a mexican strat and you want a great blues tone then these are for you. When I began playing with them installed, my father asked why I was playing an SRV record so loud. Definitely worth it for such a low price.
These pickups get a perfect 10. Just what I was looking for in my strat.
%The sound quality is fantastic. They have just the right amount of bite and they can make any strat scream.
    Nothing negative to say.

Comments about Fender Tex Mex Pickups set of 3:

Great range of sound options, all work well with these pups. Can't really complain about the sound they produce, and the range. Just the hum.
The Fender Tex-Mex pickup set made my 2003 MIM sound much clearer, butinstalling them wasn't easy. The diagram included was wrong, and the sound was erraric and rediculous buzzing. Took the guitar to a local shop to fix the wiring. They said some Fender schematics are just plain wrong. They wired it correctly and my guitar sound like a Stratocaster should, although the 60 cycle hum from these is a bit much. Positions 2 and 4 are fine, but the bridge pup produces alot of hum. I like the sound of the Tex Mex set, but probably should have got the noiseless set.
Great Fender quality, but the hum is a bit much.
For the price, they will make your stock MIM Strat sing, but if the hum is a concern, get a noiseless set.

Full, round bass tone with chimey trebles that sing. Every bit as good as the Lollar and Kinman pups in my other Strats. I'm glad I trusted the feedback from others and gave them a try.

If you're chasing SRV tones, you cant go wrong with these.

Add some snarl to your Strat

Comments about Fender Tex Mex Pickups set of 3:

Replaced the stock p'ups in my 94 MIM Strat, which weren't bad but not exciting either. I've had the Tex Mex's for a little over a year. They are excellent pups if you're looking for a vintage yet very hot sound. And make no mistake - these things are hot. They are great b/c while they're not necessarily ideal for the sweet, nice, delicate glassy sounds of more refined Strat pickups, they're perfect for nastier, biting, snarl. They really shine when the amp is overdriven or though vintage distortion boxes.

    Nice for the price!

Comments about Fender Tex Mex Pickups set of 3:

Just finished installing these in my '91 MIM Strat along with a rewire to match the Jimmie Vaughan Siggy model, tone controls to the bridge and neck only. I have to say that for the price, these things woke my old girl up! The bridge pup is plenty hot enough as advertised and the other two sound great. I have a Tweed Deluxe that I built from TubeDepot that made it apparent the old pickups were inferior, but with these I've got my Strat quack back. The old 5-way switch died in the process so it got replaced as well. I don't know if that had any bearing on the tone, but there are distinct sound choices now. Maybe with higher end guitars, there's a need for dropping the extra coin on more expensive pickups, but I couldn't be happier with the sounds and bite mine give me.

Comments about Fender Tex Mex Pickups set of 3:

I may be overvaluing these a touch to give them a perfect rating, but they are perfect for me. I highly doubt I will ever replace the pickups in my Strat again.I put these in, and have been playing for two days. I'm using a 40W Traynor amp and a EHX Germainium boost/distortion.I have to say these pups make everything better than the stock MIMs I had. It's brighter, cleaner, louder, clearer. They get down with the dirt much better. It's an awesome sound. From crystal to pure vintage slam.Biggest caveat with these is the staggered pole pieces. If you are like me, you WILL have to fiddle with pushing the high end of the pickup up while still maintaining the overall distance from the strings the way you want it. For me, I could have used a stagger that was shallower and less pronounced. The good news is you can get these elevated to your taste. Although I have to admit that my middle/solo pickup is lacking low end because of how high the center pole pieces are. They don't allow me to get the low end up high enough without the center touching the strings. That should be no biggie if you keep these things closer to the pick guard. (which I do on bridge and rythm) Speaking of bridge and rythm, they are excellent. The bridge, kept low, can have a ton of brightness and spank without overdriving your amp with the attack volume. The rythm is smooth and syrupy like a good Strat neck should be. All in all, you can hardly complain about these. If you are a nut for vintage strat sounds, there are a couple dozen different pups you can use to nail that sound. If you just want lots of jangle, bite, smooth cleans and a wicked vintage snarl crunch, these are great pups for you. If you want to take the high output bite off of them, they can be lowered to good effect. Also, the staggered pole pieces aren't the best, but can be adjusted if you don't mind lowering the pup.

Just installed a set of these in a MIM late 90's Strat. Now it souunds like a Strat!!! With a bit of an edge. I had stock MIM neck and middle pup with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail Stack in bridge. Bought it this way thinking I couldn't go wrong with SD but found I didn't like it a all.

I really love the tone I get from the neck p/u but the bridge is a bit tinney for me. Positions 2, 4, 5 are just what I was looking for anyway. I have a Jag w/ humbuckers to get me the deep sustain. I didn't wire it like the Jimmie Vaugh spec. It is wired as a grease bucket with a no-load pot on bridge/mid tone which I am fine with.

Overall, for the price you can't beat em if you are trying to improve a MIM stocker. You will not go wrong if you are trying to get a vintage Strat sound with an edge on a budget.

I wanted to take the time to give my input on these pickups that were original in a first year Jimmie Vaughan strat I've owned since new....First I've been playing guitar for 41 years and have, and I've been around the block owning dozens and dozens of very cool vintage guitars over the years...These pickups REALLY deliver the goods as far as strat pickups are concerned period!I've also put them in a real December 1962 strat (not a reissue) and they blow away the original 62 pickups away (which sounded awesome). These pickups are extremly underated proven by the price point, these are, IMHO superior to pretty much all the more expensive other Fender pickups...try a set of these and truly be amazedI strongly recomend you go w/the Jimmie Vaughan wiring....neck p/u m/volume & front tone control, middle p/u just M/volume no tone control, and rear p/u m/volume and rear tone control....

Best money I've spent on an upgrade. Ever.
One of my guitars is a strat wannabe I've been tweaking for years. I got a MightyMite neck and a Fender pickguard from Musicians Friend a few months ago. Just put these TexMex pickups in the other day, replacing some Carvin pickups from back in the 90's. The difference is astounding. ASTOUNDING! Stevie Ray licks with all the double stops and rolls and hammers finally sound like they're supposed to sound.
Way more sensitive than what I had.
I bought the cheapest Fender set because I don't have money to burn, but that's what it would have been buying the more expensive set. I've played Strats, and I've heard Strats since I was a kid. These babies make my GoldieLocks sound like the real deal.

Comments about Fender Tex Mex Pickups set of 3:

Dont get me wrong, if you play rock and need a hotter sound than stock pickups, then these are for you. For a classic country and rock n roll player like me, these don't have the sound, to trebly to much midrange, to powerfull for my taste. the bridge is about 7.5K ohms and the middle and neck is about 6.5k, vintage (50's early 60's) strat pickups were all 3 wound to aprox 5.6k ohms or so. I will say the neck pickup has a good sound though, i can tolerate it, and my strat i can have the bridge and neck pickups on at the same time, and it sounds good there, but i'm not satisfied at all with them, and plus when we bought them they cost more than they do now. haha next set for me will be Fender 57 / 62 strat pickups. i want the old sound!

I replaced the pups I had originally installed in my partscaster which were Highway one pups. Never really did like those, even though I used them for about 8 years. I had a switch in the guitar getting noisy so I thought why not change everything. Did some looking and decided on the Tex Mex set because the specs were about the same as the Texas Specials at half the price. Being a computer and electronics tech my whole life, I don't care about cloth covered wire and myths. THese sound good and when set in the sweet spot perform like they were designed to do.

I bought the three set of pickups for a guitar project I'm doing and bought them from Musician Friend because they had a set in a less than perfect box but the pickups were perfect. I put these pickups in a knock off Stratocaster copy that is made of really good quality woods but the electronics were sub-par. After installing these pickups there was a night and day difference in the sound coming out of my amp and it was very surprising, the sound is tight and crisp and the amount of volume is also quite impressive.I would recommend these to everyone. If you want great sound for a great price, buy these from Musician Friend.
