If you're like me, an old dog fingernail player needing a new trick, these Fred Kelly Freedom picks might be what you're looking for. You can achieve very similar tone and volume, and retain a lot of your technique in terms of how you attack the strings. There is also something to be said for consistency. With natural or applied fingernails, you are always adjusting to variable length and condition. Fingerpicks are a constant.

Two caveats:

I found they work better if you wrap some ¼" waterproof bandaging tape around them. Get it next to the bandaids at the store. This is not to adhere the pick to your finger. The pick deflects from the string and the gap in the bottom of the pick expands. They tend to wobble around too much, affecting tone and volume. The bandage tape fixes that pretty good and stays sticky, so it's easily repositionable.

And, don't expect a perfect result right out of the box. You gotta experiment, practice and get used to them. It was worth while for me. I hope you'll buy some, too. Otherwise, they'll stop making them and I'll have to find Plan C.

Like many aging fingerstyle guitarists, I have found my nails are not what they were when I was 20, or even 30. I had tried many other products, including aLaska Picks. Everything was a major compromise to the point that they were barely worth it. The Fred Kelly Freedom Picks were not available in any music store in my area, but from what I had read from reviews, they were my salvation. So I ordered them. They were a bit pricey to guess on fitment, but I bought the large and they were the correct size for my fingers. However, no amount of boiling or modification would make them anything other than what they were: unplayable lumps of plastic on my fingertips. Maybe it's an aggressive playing style, but I don't think so. I fit them properly, but because of the way fingers seem to be (but likely just mine), there was some up/down hinge-like movement along the line of the finger. I couldn't compensate or correct for it, so there was just a loose feel which felt sloppy and was distracting. However, I did stop that movement with duct tape, but that totally defeats the purpose of removable picks. But once I did get them to a playable disposition, I found that they sounded beyond mushy on the nylon strings. Noticeably, finger-nails-on-chalkboard obvious. They could fit to the point where I didn't even notice them, but the sound alone made these something I would never use. Everybody seems to be very happy with them, so I may just be the odd one that this product wouldn't work for. And that bummed me out, because I was counting on them.

Comments about Fred Kelly Picks Delrin Freedom Finger Guitar Picks:

After trying at least a dozen other finger picks, over the years, this is finally a product that I can say I love. I ordered size large because I usually wear a large to extra large men's glove. At first try I thought , oh well, These are too small . But I put them on a spatula handle, dipped them in boiling water for 10 seconds, then to the cold water faucet and wow! they fit snugly but very comfortable. As I played the guitar with them, I relieved a few pressure points with # 150 sandpaper wrapped about a round pencil and now I can play 3 hours a day with absolutely no pain. They stay put on the fingers and you truly can frail like a madman on the strings. Their tone is the closest to natural finger nails of all the brands I've tried. I like the low ,natural profile and they don't hang up on the strings. Now I can't imagine playing without them!

I have been looking for a pick that I can use. I play with my fingernails but after time the nails start wearing down so I needed something that would protect them and at the same time produce a good sound. i have never been able to hold on to a flat pick so this was the solution that worked best for me. I use just one on my index finger usually but have also tried two. Wish I could get one to fit my thumb but have not found the correct size

Comments about Fred Kelly Picks Delrin Freedom Finger Guitar Picks:

I've been a finger style guitar player for 61 years using natural fingernails and/or acrylics. The acrylics have ruined my natural fingernails, but I'm not ready to quit playing yet, so a substitute for natural fingernails is required for me to continue playing. Fred Kelly finger picks have worked best for me up to now and I expect they will continue. The feel is obviously not quite the same as natural fingernails and calls for some practice to accustom yourself to their use, but they are about as close to natural fingernails in both feel and sound as I've found at this time. They are also tough enough, in my opinion, to withstand some pretty aggressive playing techniques and appear to have some good lasting qualities.

Second time I've purchased these. The first ones were stolen off the bandstand! I use the Alaska pics more, but these work when I need a "louder" sound. Some "cons" seen previously are not merited. As in any plastic manufacturing process and individual's preference, you need to customize this one. Using an Emery board nail filer, work off the rough edge that effect your cuticle area. The pics can be gently heated in hot water to fit any finger.

Comments about Fred Kelly Picks Delrin Freedom Finger Guitar Picks:

As others have said, product runs toward the small side. I have average size hands for a woman and ordered medium, which was a tad tight but ok. So if in doubt order up, especially for guys. The material is pretty stiff/thick, so it was not super easy to widen w/ hot water bath. I like to reshape the edge by my cuticle by refitting with hot water and mostly by judicious filing in order to get the pick in the spot where it won't dig and annoy my cuticle. I don't pick that much but do like this product to protect my 1st fingernail from wear from strumming.(I don't like fussing with salon nails on the right hand, nor do I like their look. I'm using this pick primarily on nylagut or fluorocarbon strings and it does give me more volume but I am still getting use to the brighter sound.

Comments about Fred Kelly Picks Delrin Freedom Finger Guitar Picks:

I find these picks to produce a more natural, fingernail type tone; something I prefer on acoustic guitar over metal fingerpicks that I still routinely use for dobro and pedal steel. But for guitar fingerpicking, I prefer having my fingertips exposed and plucking with my fingernail, and these picks come very close to that feel, provided you get them to fit right.

And that's what's very tricky with this product. As others have said, they run small. I am a medium sized male and wound up getting both, medium and large sized picks for a better fit on individual fingers (large for index & middle, medium for ring). I had initially bought a medium set and they were too tight on my index and middle fingers. I tried to expand them by putting the picks in hot water but it didn't work out for me. However, I liked them enough to get another set in large, and now they're perfect. When they fit right they're comfortable and you get good control and tone. Despite the sizing issues, I gave the product 5 stars because I really do like the sound I get with them.

Comments about Fred Kelly Picks Delrin Freedom Finger Guitar Picks:

First off I gave this a high rating because these are the most functional finger picks I've ever tried. I prefer picking (hybrid) with my fingernails but I can never depend on them being available. These have a more natural sound and feel. It took me awhile to make them fit comfortably. I tried hot water but it didn't seem to work. Then I inserted a wooden dowel into the pick to spread it out some and then put it into my toaster oven at about 200 degrees for a few minutes. I'd pull it out and let it cool with the dowel still inserted. After a few tries I got them so they're pretty comfortable. Where it was cutting into my cuticle on the index finger I just filed out the offensive area. The best thing about these is being able to do a forward strum without the string catching. I believe these will be with me for a long time.

I used National steel finger picks in the 60's. They were difficult to fit, uncomfortable and sounded loud but tinny. No so with Delrin Freedom Finger Picks. Use hot water to adjust the fit. More comfortable than any other finger pick I have tried. I haven't used fingerpicks for sometime now, but is getting better with practice. Fingernails work great until you break one, or two! Though I am still adjusting to using finger picks again, these have a natural feel on the strings, the tome is also more natural, unlike steel finger picks. The material is tough and will not wear out in a lifetime. They are adjustable with hot water. great tone. What's not to like. I recommend these picks to anyone who fingerpicks anything with strings.

These are great picks for us finger pickers. I wouldn't recommend them to banjo players (need that style for banjo), but for guitar, these are great. They serve well for upward picking as well as downward strumming. If you're unplugged, they help with volume, as well. Thumbs up to Fred Kelly!

More natural sound than metal National picks. More stable on the fingers than Alaska picks. Feel fairly natural. The biggest challenge may be in getting picks that exactly fit your fingers, as I'm not sure there is any way to adjust these.

I've tried the metal finger picks before and had trouble getting used to them. These still are requiring some getting used to, but they were more comfortable right from the start than the metal and give a nicer sound (for me) than the metal picks gave.

Clawhammer banjo: I use it on an otherwise unusable split nail middle finger.

not a suitable alternative to acrylic nails

These don't work for me. They feel awkward and clumsy, and the picking edge is too thick for my technique. I'll have to continue having acrylic nails on my thumb, index and ring fingers for dinner picking guitar.

I've tried the metal finger picks before without success. I normally just use the fleshy part of my fingers and thumb to finger pick, but the sound is often bassy. These fit me well (Large; my fingers are approx 3/4 inch diameter at the nail. They are quite tight, but they don't fall off, and I can push them down on my fingers to reveal just an 1/8 inch of pick - similar to a real fingernail. The sound, to me, is not as bright as a real finger nail (or acrylic - though I've never gone that route - others in the band have). I personally don't like having 3 long fingernails, so these work great for me.
