OVERVIEW

Replicates the original down to every last detail!

Straight from Gibson Guitar's Historic Re-issue guitars come Gibson's new Historic Spec series-parts that have been specially designed to replicate the original parts used by Gibson in the late 1950s.

This Historic Potentiometer has been designed to be more vintage-accurate than any other potentiometer on the market today. With a dynamic sweep from 1 to 10, you'll notice the difference. For anyone who's ever said, "They don't make 'em like they used to," here's some proof to the contrary.

Beautiful "Centralab" Taper

By William Walker

from Undisclosed

Comments about Gibson Historic 500K Audio Taper Potentiometer:

For the price, these are great pots. If you own an older Historic, you will notice a HUGE difference in how your guitar sounds and feels. For the price, for a set of four, you can't go wrong.
Gibson really outdid themselves on this. For years, all the boutique parts companies have been touting their "improved" Audio Taper pots made by CTS, who are basically one of only a handful of companies left making pots like these. BUT, and this is a big but, no one ever got the taper or the feel of the pot correct. These new pots were always a hybrid taper that endeavored to combine a linear and audio taper. Well, I'm sure they succeded, but they didn't work like the old ones. The old ones had an 80:20 ratio in what's known as a "straight-line" audio taper. This means that you get 80% of the volume in the first 20% of the rotation. A staight line drop off right at 8 on the knob. This allowed you to clean up your tone with a tiny twist of your knob and still have plenty of volume for a great clean tone. None of this turning down to 2 before anything happened. Why didn't any of these boutique people do it the right way? Because CTS wanted a PILE of money to retool to do it. Yielding to overwhelming pressure, Gibson forked over the cash and had CTS duplicate that old Centralab taper. They also had them use the lowest friction setting on the shaft, so these turn really easily and will get even more loose over time--just like the old ones. Great job Gibson!

Comments about Gibson Historic 500K Audio Taper Potentiometer:

I put two of these in a gibson SG classic, volume positions, that I also put seymoure duncan stacked p90 pickups in. I changed the tone pots with fender 500 ohm replacements. Wired to SD spec they work well and the short shaft is correct size. Being used to regular pots, these are a little strange since they turn down fast. 10 to 8 is a big difference and below 5 is really low volume. I am getting better sound than with the original 300 ohm pots that were stock.

Comments about Gibson Historic 500K Audio Taper Potentiometer:

Purchased a volume and tone pot when I upgraded to a Gibson 57 Classic pickup in my arch top. Very high quality pots that sound terrific, feel quality and were easy to install. Just note as others have reviewed on here, the volume really drops off between 10 and 8. There seems to be a sweet spot for my guitar anyway, right around 9. When used as a tone control you'll find it much wider in options than your stock unit that you're replacing. Smooth quiet operation.

              About Me Experienced

Comments about Gibson Historic 500K Audio Taper Potentiometer:

Replaced the bridge volume on a '72 SG that had gotten noisy. The pot went in fine enough. Sounded fine. But man, did it take a bit of wrist strength to turn it. Incredibly stiff action. Strange. I like to quickly turn my volume down when the song is over, so this didn't work for that. Too stiff. I figured that maybe it just needed to break in, so during band practice in between songs, I worked it back and forth with the hopes of loosening it up. Suddenly it started to crackle, and now it cuts out. Less than an hour. The pot that this one replaced lasted 45 years, 17 of which I have owned it. Now I will admit that I broke it by working it back and forth, even though I certainly didn't do it roughly, but I never would have done that had it turned smoothly like, oh say, EVERY other pot in EVERY electric guitar that I have ever played. I will not purchase again. Perhaps I got a defective one, but I don't want to take a chance on this pricier one again when I can spend less on a CTS that I have installed in guitars before with good results. I am no professional luthier, but I have been playing for 27 years and have been doing my own repairs for at least 15 years and I have never had a pot like this.

Just tried my guitar after installing them, and I am really surprised at how much my acoustic/electric sounds so much better. I new my old pots had issues, but wow, what a difference. Thank you, Gibson, and Musicians Friend.
