OVERVIEW

TUSQ XL offers vintage looks and permanent lubrication.

The TUSQ XL 1/4" Epiphone Slotted Nut (PQL-6060-00) is a superior replacement nut for Epiphone guitars.

Finally, the breakthrough you've been waiting for. Now you can have it all - the great tone of TUSQ, classic good looks AND permanent lubrication. If you love the look of a vintage white nut, but you keep going out of tune when you bend strings or use your tremolo, then TUSQ XL is just what you need.

TUSQ XL is designed to boost guitar tone and performance. This precision engineered nut is made with a specially formulated material which couples the strings' vibrations to the neck and brings out the hidden harmonics and richness in every note. It is based on the highly resonant TUSQ man made ivory, but is impregnated with Teflon to improve the tuning performance of the guitar.

If you have an acoustic or vintage guitar, you owe it to yourself to hear the difference a TUSQ replacement guitar nut makes. Compared to standard materials such as bone, Micarta or Corian, you'll hear more harmonics with every note you play when you use TUSQ on your guitar.

TUSQ is a proprietary material that is precision engineered under high pressure and heat. It is specifically formulated to deliver the right frequencies with the optimum transfer rate to the top of your guitar every time. Because of the way TUSQ replacement guitar nut is made, it is a consistent material that is rich in tone and harmonic content.

TUSQ guitar parts have quickly become an important tone performance tool for some of the world's most renowned guitar manufacturers, luthiers and playing professionals. TUSQ nuts and saddles have rich tone and sustain, without the inconsistency found in ivory, bone and other natural materials. Bone and ivory have hard and soft spots (grain) throughout each piece, hampering consistent transfer of vibrations to the guitar top. TUSQ replacement guitar nuts are designed to transfer the right frequencies more efficiently from the string to the guitar body. Acoustic guitars come alive. Electric guitars will get a brighter sound and increased harmonic content.

FEATURES
  • Has a crystal clear-bell like high-end and big open low-end
  • Laboratory-proven to enhance harmonic content (up to 200% over other materials)
  • Engineered for maximum vibration transfer
  • Permanent lubrication
  • Used by the world's finest guitar manufacturers
  • Consistent quality from piece to piece and within each piece
  • No flat or dead spots that can be found in bone or ivory
  • Easy to work with - can be filed and sanded; will not chip or flake

Good product overall. It takes some sanding but anyone can do it. It's worth the investment. Improves the clarity of your guitar tone. Give you a little more brightness and notes sustain more. It was a great improvement to my epiphone les Paul standard. I've read about how changing the nut of your guitar is the cheapest way to improve tone and they were right.

I originally gave this nut a favorable review, replacing an Earvana nut on an ESP LTD EC-1000, but I have had some issues and am removing it. Some people like the Earvana, but I have had problems with the "E" string sinking into the material and eventually buzzing on two different guitars. I have checked the TUSQ nut several times and I can not understand what is happening. There is the the correct amount of clearance and It's not hitting the first fret. The high "E" string is just not right. It is just not crisp and clear, it's sort of muted. I have tried changing the strings, which is what I originally thought the problem was, but it sounds the same. When using the frets it sounds fine. I've have used it for gigs and you cannot hear it as much when amplified, but it really bugs me when playing the guitar acoustically. I have now made a bone nut from a blank, which was very time consuming, but it sounds much better. I don't know if there was some sort of fault in this particular nut, but I purchased two, so I will try more experimentation. I had to to get this guitar fixed as it is my gigging ax. I have owned and used several other Fenders and Gibsons with bone nuts for many years without any issue. I use 10-52 strings. I am surprised I had this issue after all the good reviews.

Plenty high for the Hohner I was repairing. I had to take a bit off the height and a little off the width. The strings appear to be 34.5mm, E-to-E.

Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL 1/4" Epiphone Slotted Nut:

Sounded ok til i filed it too low, but the intonation on the 2nd fret was hard to get right and this stuff files easier and faster than bone. One second I was sharp on 2nd fret then next thing I know, funny sound on high e string. Uh oh. Time to go pay someone for a bone nut.Yeah bone is easier to control or not mess up. I have installed bone nuts with the strings preslotted before and just took them to shop for minor adjustments. Saved money that way. But alas I dont have files and its a lot less hassle to just pay someone when you dont have tools anyway. Oh well.

I have an Ovation guitar that is probably 25-30 years old (I got it used), and was still on it's original plastic nut. The grooves in the nut had gotten sawn down by the strings over the years, and caused the strings to get bound up while tuning. I had it replaced in less than an hour with this, with no issues. It only took so long because this was my first guitar maintenance job, so I had to stop frequently to check fit. It took a good while to sand to fit, but anyone can do it if you're somewhat familiar with sanding and basic jobs like that. After I got the new nut in, I noticed an increase in my guitar staying in tune, and the strings NEVER bind when tuning. Permanently lubricated means exactly what it says.

Replaced a broken plastic nut on an Epiphone SG Pro, required very little sanding to be a perfect fit. The tusq material seems very durable, and the lubrication does wonders for tuning. There is a slight increase in the tone and sustain of the instrument. Will definitely be replacing more plastic nuts in my collection with these tusq nuts.
