LR Baggs

An evolution in acoustic-guitar amplification, this internal mic delivers accurate sound plus the freedom to move around while you play.

BEYOND PICKUPS – BEYOND COMPARE
There's no argument that a mic is the best way to capture the sound of an acoustic guitar, but until now, using a mic for most live performances has been an elusive dream. Lyric, the next step in Tru•Mic technology from LR Baggs, is the long-overdue realization of this dream. Without a pickup, Lyric's microphone accurately transports your guitar's actual voice to a live audience for the most realistic and inspiring sound you will ever experience.

TRU•MIC TECHNOLOGY
LR Baggs' featherweight microphone, each high-graded for ideal response, mounts to the underside of the bridge plate with simple peel-and-stick adhesive to preserve the integrity of your instrument. The mic leverages the "pressure-zone" principle by positioning the capsule just 3mm from the surface of the top to hear the entire soundboard for even balance and tone. And the mic's proximity to the top allows high gain before feedback. Unlike other attempts to use an internal mic, Lyric employs noise-canceling technology that rejects "boxy" reflections inside of the acoustic chamber. This patent pending minor miracle enables the mic to act as if it were outside of the guitar delivering a clear and open performance.

CIRCUIT INNOVATIONS
In a studio, you would have to use an entire rack of gear to achieve what LR Baggs has built into Lyric's tiny circuit board. Their lead engineer, Tommy Linn, created several patent-pending "black box" circuit innovations that unlock the potential of the microphone. The first tightens the lower frequencies for a punchier attack with natural dynamics. The second maintains the mic's sweetness no matter how hard you play. The third innovation, not patent pending but useful, is an adjustable "presence" control that dials high frequency response perfectly for your guitar. Wrap all of this in all discrete, high-fidelity mic pre and you have a world class microphone system as an integral part of your guitar anywhere you plug in.

We were struggling with getting the natural sound of the Taylor with stock pickup. The Lyric gives a perfectly natural rendition of the acoustic sound of the instrument, plus it was easy to install myself!

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

The other reviews are accurate. This is the second Lyric that I have purchased, and both of them work very well. It accurately reproduces the sound of my guitars (Taylor GA-5 & Martin D-17m) which is a very good thing. The only negative with the transaction was that the free shipping was through UPS Mail Innovations. UPS did their part, but the Postal Service took seven days to ship the last 70 miles. UPSMI shipping should be avoided unless you are prepared to wait two weeks for your item.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

Been looking for a natural sounding pickup system for my Martin D-28 and had read some reviews about the Lyric and watched some Youtube videos. I was sold and purchased one and had it installed. It sounds very natural and pleasant. I did have to roll back some of the high end but they make that fairly easy to do with the gizmo they include in the box. If you want a quality mic sound without all the feedback issues, I highly recommend the LR Baggs Lyric.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

The Lyric is a mic inside your guitar. there is an ajustment screw to find balance between bass and treble but for the most part the Lyric simply amplifies your guitar's natural sound. If you like how your guitar sounds unpluged and simply want to amplify your sound, this is for you. I installed it in my Martin J15 and love it because it brings out the volume I loose when using a capo.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

Very happy that I bought this over the K&K that I was debating. The reviews and videos helped as I had not had the chance to hear it in person. The Baggs costs more and uses a battery. BUT, it sounds like my guitar and can easily be ported to another instrument in the future if needed.

The K&K is less expensive, widely used, and has no battery, BUT it sounds like a pickup. I didn't want that. I wanted the sound of my guitar and was okay with the extra cost.

I front a 4 piece band playing rythym guitar (2000 Martin D16), with drums, a lead guitar, and bass, and this gives us a true sound for the runs and walks that I accent with. We play traditional country, western swing, truck driving songs - good old american music. I'm using the Baggs Venue DI as my pre-amp which helps as it has presence control and 5-band EQ. It takes some dialing initially, but you can get an accurate sound of your guitar.

I've cranked it up loud with no feedback even in close proximity to speakers and monitors. No trouble.

Installed it myself in about 40 minutes including drilling out the tailblock using a 1/8"-1/2" unibit. You just need a mirror and a flashlight and the guts to do what everyone else isn't doing. Buy it. You'll like it.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

The pickup sounds great and was easy to install. My only gripe is that Musicians Friend sent it to the wrong address, so I didn't get it in time for a church performance. I ended up having to buy a cheaper pickup at a local store and installing it on my main guitar. The Lyric was installed on a Silver Creek.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

I put this into a 70's era Martin D-28. I had just had a new bridge, neck reset, and total fretjob and did not want to go with an undersaddle pickup. It was very quick install (less than 30 minutes total) and the sound is very natural. With a very slight tonal adjustment, it sounded quite warm and natural through a Fishman Soloamp. It sounded even better run through a Red-Eye preamp, which allows you to control treble very simply. I also ran it through an Apogee Duet into Logic Pro and was amazed at the natural sound when recording. Very satisfied so far.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

This seems to be it, folks -- an acoustic amplification system that does not color or quack. I've played through so many tinny PAs, screeching acoustic amps, and robotic pickups that I pretty much gave up. When I read about the Lyric system, I figured it was at least a shot at something novel. Cut to the present day, when I've installed the system in four wildly different acoustics ('65 LG-1, '92 M-38, '75 D12-35, 2011 D-16 Adirondack) and been amazed every time. This is as close as you can get to direct miking, imho. I am not a luthier, but I've had 30 minutes and a 1/2" drill bit so I have yet to run into a problem. If there's one complaint, it's that the jack mount barely makes it through thick tail blocks (as on a 12-string), forcing you to flip the strap pin around to make the threads meet. A minor quibble, not a big deal aesthetically, hasn't stopped me yet. So! If you ever plug in an acoustic guitar, you owe yourself a shot at this baby. Well worth the cost.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

                        Hi:
I enjoy playing and have admittedly not tried all pickups, but I have heard and gone thru many in my time, always not-so-happy with plugged- in sound vs a dynamic mic for live and a small condenser mic for recording. The best I have heard in my experience was a tape-on (yes, that is how they work) condenser that cost the artist a whole lot and sounded wonderful.
I participate with a volunteer sound crew doing set-up and mixing for small auditorium concerts in my area, and (Probably most of you out there already know this) experience has always told us to line-in and mic most acoustic artists, with generally lots more emphasis on the mic. I frequently discuss with performers what they are using in their set-ups and listen closely to their thoughts re equipment, mix preferences and performances.
I most recently had a stick-on under-the-saddle transducer in my guitar(I play finger-style on steel strings). It was a definite improvement over other pickups, I still always had to fuss with an EQ/DI to try and minimize the quack and exaggerated bass. I eventually noticed the Lyric(A pressure-zone condenser mic) obtained one, traded out the transducer in one evening and immediately got lots closer to what I had been searching for all along....my guitar's true sound when lined-in and amplified. There is definitely less feedback, you know what I mean if you have ever tried to dial-in a hot condenser mike for a performer on an acoustic instrument facing the stage monitors.

Notes: 1)If you need to practice more or change your fingering habits, this pick-up will demonstrate that to you immediately. It will not make our poor guitar habits sound better, just louder.
2)You will likely have to adjust the presence control to suit your tolerance of string squeak, and sensitivity to every little unmusical noise you make, and if you want a louder bass you will have to bump that up to your liking on your amp or mixer. These will be minor quick adjustments in comparison to adjusting to reduce piezo quacks and booming bass.

For the money, the ease of installation, live sound adjustment, condenser-mike-instrument- faithful sound quality, better feedback control and no piezo-quack, this is a good pick, and better than anything else I have tried so far.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

Fairly easy to install, I really like the fact that it requires no major mods to the guitar, or any saddle filing for instruments that don't already have undersaddle. Sounds a little "boxy" in the midrange, and doesn't have a lot of low end...comparable to maybe a SM57 at around 8"-12" off axis from soundhole...but a little EQ and compression and it really comes to life! Maybe some light saturation on heavy strumming, but not enough to sound "distorted" just sounds a little processed on the attack at times, like broadcast radio. It's totally manageable, and keeps the peaks from jumping out at the listener. I am now using this in place of studio mics for all my song demos, and to be honest the difference is indistinguishable to most people. Don't believe me? Check out my reverbnation page and see if you can tell which tracks are LYRIC or mic'd! Being able to just plug straight into a multitrack and go the moment inspiration strikes is a huge benefit. Have experienced ZERO feedback in live settings, even in near-field situations. If you want a little more low-end and don't mind the undersaddle piezo, grab the original ANTHEM model. If you want a quick and easy install that sounds better than any piezo or magnetic pickup ever made, GET THIS and you will not be disappointed! -James DeBorde
