OVERVIEW

An evolution in acoustic-guitar amplification, this internal mic delivers accurate sound plus the freedom to move around while you play.

BEYOND PICKUPS - BEYOND COMPARE
There's no argument that a mic is the best way to capture the sound of an acoustic guitar, but until now, using a mic for most live performances has been an elusive dream. Lyric, the next step in Tru¢Mic technology from LR Baggs, is the long-overdue realization of this dream. Without a pickup, Lyric's microphone accurately transports your guitar's actual voice to a live audience for the most realistic and inspiring sound you will ever experience.

TRU¢MIC TECHNOLOGY
LR Baggs' featherweight microphone, each high-graded for ideal response, mounts to the underside of the bridge plate with simple peel-and-stick adhesive to preserve the integrity of your instrument. The mic leverages the "pressure-zone" principle by positioning the capsule just 3mm from the surface of the top to hear the entire soundboard for even balance and tone. And the mic's proximity to the top allows high gain before feedback. Unlike other attempts to use an internal mic, Lyric employs noise-canceling technology that rejects "boxy" reflections inside of the acoustic chamber. This patent pending minor miracle enables the mic to act as if it were outside of the guitar delivering a clear and open performance.

CIRCUIT INNOVATIONS
In a studio, you would have to use an entire rack of gear to achieve what LR Baggs has built into Lyric's tiny circuit board. Their lead engineer, Tommy Linn, created several patent-pending "black box" circuit innovations that unlock the potential of the microphone. The first tightens the lower frequencies for a punchier attack with natural dynamics. The second maintains the mic's sweetness no matter how hard you play. The third innovation, not patent pending but useful, is an adjustable "presence" control that dials high frequency response perfectly for your guitar. Wrap all of this in all discrete, high-fidelity mic pre and you have a world class microphone system as an integral part of your guitar anywhere you plug in.

Hi:
I enjoy playing and have admittedly not tried all pickups, but I have heard and gone thru many in my time, always not-so-happy with plugged- in sound vs a dynamic mic for live and a small condenser mic for recording. The best I have heard in my experience was a tape-on (yes, that is how they work) condenser that cost the artist a whole lot and sounded wonderful.
I participate with a volunteer sound crew doing set-up and mixing for small auditorium concerts in my area, and (Probably most of you out there already know this) experience has always told us to line-in and mic most acoustic artists, with generally lots more emphasis on the mic. I frequently discuss with performers what they are using in their set-ups and listen closely to their thoughts re equipment, mix preferences and performances.
I most recently had a stick-on under-the-saddle transducer in my guitar(I play finger-style on steel strings). It was a definite improvement over other pickups, I still always had to fuss with an EQ/DI to try and minimize the quack and exaggerated bass. I eventually noticed the Lyric(A pressure-zone condenser mic) obtained one, traded out the transducer in one evening and immediately got lots closer to what I had been searching for all along....my guitar's true sound when lined-in and amplified. There is definitely less feedback, you know what I mean if you have ever tried to dial-in a hot condenser mike for a performer on an acoustic instrument facing the stage monitors.

Notes: 1)If you need to practice more or change your fingering habits, this pick-up will demonstrate that to you immediately. It will not make our poor guitar habits sound better, just louder.
2)You will likely have to adjust the presence control to suit your tolerance of string squeak, and sensitivity to every little unmusical noise you make, and if you want a louder bass you will have to bump that up to your liking on your amp or mixer. These will be minor quick adjustments in comparison to adjusting to reduce piezo quacks and booming bass.

For the money, the ease of installation, live sound adjustment, condenser-mike-instrument- faithful sound quality, better feedback control and no piezo-quack, this is a good pick, and better than anything else I have tried so far.

I purchased the LR Baggs Lyric based on great reviews, product specs from Baggs' website, and testimonies from very famous players raving about the system. I liked the idea that it was not very invasive of an install, and easy to remove. This turned out to be good thing. After installing in my Martin OM-35, I tried it out through several amps, PA systems, etc. and I thought I was going crazy because it sounded distorted, and just not good. Maybe I got a defective unit...possible. I called the folks at Baggs and they were very nice and helpful, but did not know what was causing the problem. After messing with the high-end sensor and having other players listen to it, I came to the sad conclusion that I just did not like they way this pickup sounded. I finally had the unit removed and LR Baggs agreed to let me return it. I hope they find out is was defective, because I really think they make a quality product and was very disappointed that it didn't work out for me. All I can say is, be careful and make sure to listen closely to it before you keep it! I'm going back to a piezo system.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

Fairly easy to install, I really like the fact that it requires no major mods to the guitar, or any saddle filing for instruments that don't already have undersaddle. Sounds a little "boxy" in the midrange, and doesn't have a lot of low end...comparable to maybe a SM57 at around 8"-12" off axis from soundhole...but a little EQ and compression and it really comes to life! Maybe some light saturation on heavy strumming, but not enough to sound "distorted" just sounds a little processed on the attack at times, like broadcast radio. It's totally manageable, and keeps the peaks from jumping out at the listener. I am now using this in place of studio mics for all my song demos, and to be honest the difference is indistinguishable to most people. Don't believe me? Check out my reverbnation page and see if you can tell which tracks are LYRIC or mic'd! Being able to just plug straight into a multitrack and go the moment inspiration strikes is a huge benefit. Have experienced ZERO feedback in live settings, even in near-field situations. If you want a little more low-end and don't mind the undersaddle piezo, grab the original ANTHEM model. If you want a quick and easy install that sounds better than any piezo or magnetic pickup ever made, GET THIS and you will not be disappointed! -James DeBorde

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

The Lyric is a mic inside your guitar. there is an ajustment screw to find balance between bass and treble but for the most part the Lyric simply amplifies your guitar's natural sound. If you like how your guitar sounds unpluged and simply want to amplify your sound, this is for you. I installed it in my Martin J15 and love it because it brings out the volume I loose when using a capo.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

I use the Fishman Rare Earth Humbucking sound hole pickup on a Larivee Jumbo and a custom Paracho guitar for recording and playing out. They have always been dependable and easy to manage. However, I was always missing that true mic sound. I had used the Anthem and found it difficult to maintain a clean and acceptable mix between the tru-mic and the undersaddle pickup without extensive and constant EQ adjustments. While the Lyric does present initial problems with a slightly tinny sound and finger to body noise amplification (if that makes any sense to you), it was easily adjusted via the small mic presence adjustment on the volume control. One EQ adjustment on my amp got rid of the high-end sound I don't wan, and I can use my D35 without further worries. AND, I can crank the hell out of it and not feed back. True acoustic sound from my acoustic guitar. While I won't be switching out my two Fishmans, I will be using only the LL Baggs Lyric pickups on my next acoustic guitars. Peace

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

I've spent years looking for an ever-elusive system that could amplify my acoustic guitars ACCURATELY. If it wasn't piezo "quack" it was a magnetic PUP system that makes your guitar sound like an electric. I've hated virtually every sytem I've heard on the market, except the Lyric (and the Baggs Anthem as well). Every other non mic-based system could care less what guitar you're playing because they all end up sounding similar. What's the point if you can't capture YOUR acoustic's sound? Might as well grab your electric and be done with it. Mic'ing is the way to go if you want the truest, most accurate sound, and the Lyric does so in an ingenious way. Yes, it will feed back if you're not careful, which is why you should be using a good acoustic preamp as well. I've mounted the Lyric on 3 different guitars now, which I use with my Zoom A3 preamp, and whatdoya know? 3 different sounding guitars...just as it should be. I use it live and in the studio as another option to mic'ing. Often I end up just using the Lyric's signal and/or blending with a room mic. Saves a ton of time getting the perfect mic position. Get it.

This replaced a sound-board transducer in an older mahogany dreadnaught... Huge improvement.
An outboard EQ will help, but straight into an amp or DI, it sounds like the natural guitar.
              Very pleased.

The other reviews are accurate. This is the second Lyric that I have purchased, and both of them work very well. It accurately reproduces the sound of my guitars (Taylor GA-5 & Martin D-17m) which is a very good thing. The only negative with the transaction was that the free shipping was through UPS Mail Innovations. UPS did their part, but the Postal Service took seven days to ship the last 70 miles. UPSMI shipping should be avoided unless you are prepared to wait two weeks for your item.

Been looking for a natural sounding pickup system for my Martin D-28 and had read some reviews about the Lyric and watched some Youtube videos. I was sold and purchased one and had it installed. It sounds very natural and pleasant. I did have to roll back some of the high end but they make that fairly easy to do with the gizmo they include in the box. If you want a quality mic sound without all the feedback issues, I highly recommend the LR Baggs Lyric.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

Very happy that I bought this over the K&K that I was debating. The reviews and videos helped as I had not had the chance to hear it in person. The Baggs costs more and uses a battery. BUT, it sounds like my guitar and can easily be ported to another instrument in the future if needed.

The K&K is less expensive, widely used, and has no battery, BUT it sounds like a pickup. I didn't want that. I wanted the sound of my guitar and was okay with the extra cost.

I front a 4 piece band playing rythym guitar (2000 Martin D16), with drums, a lead guitar, and bass, and this gives us a true sound for the runs and walks that I accent with. We play traditional country, western swing, truck driving songs - good old american music. I'm using the Baggs Venue DI as my pre-amp which helps as it has presence control and 5-band EQ. It takes some dialing initially, but you can get an accurate sound of your guitar.

I've cranked it up loud with no feedback even in close proximity to speakers and monitors. No trouble.

Installed it myself in about 40 minutes including drilling out the tailblock using a 1/8"-1/2" unibit. You just need a mirror and a flashlight and the guts to do what everyone else isn't doing. Buy it. You'll like it.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

I installed this in my Blueridge BR-162. It sounds just like there is a expensive mike out in front of the guitar. It sounds just like the guitar. Others have claimed that with different pickups, but are never 100% true. But we accepted it because it was a close as we could get. Well now, it is true. My Blueridge has amazing tone and it comes through even when plugged in. If you don't like the sound of the pickup, you don't like the sound of your guitar. You might have to adjust the presence control to dial in the sound. Mine was perfect from the manufacturer. I have always liked LR Baggs pickups as they where more natural sounding than other brands. They continue to kick but with the best pickups availeable. I wondered about feedback but even being close to the sub on stage I have yet to get any feedback. They do a amazing job eliminating it however they do it.

Just replaced the K&K (which I absolutely hated the sound of) with this pickup and it's AMAZING! My guitar finally sounds like my guitar! I couldn't be more please. I installed myself- super easy. If you're considering getting one of these, DO IT!

This arrived and was installed today, and I'm happy with it......But, I have one major gripe: The only installation info offered is to go the the Baggs website. Once you go there, you'll learn.....for the first time.....That Baggs offers no warranty whatsoever unless installed by an "Authorized Dealer"...... I'm okay with that, I guess, but only because I'm a woodworker who has also installed pickup before. I'm not afraid to drill endpin holes, but for some it could be daunting. I don't think it's intentional, but I think these details should be communicated at time of purchase. It'll take some tweeking as far as the sonics go. I'm using it in a Takamine GSeries Folk Size, through a Crate Telluride. But I also like busking with a Roland cube, and it will take some real magic to get good bass response with that. But, I'm happy with it.

I'm a long time user/enthusiast of the LR Baggs Anthem system - in my J-45 it sounds AMAZING. When I recently got an old Hummingbird, with the movable saddle, I was so happy to discover the Lyric - mic only version of the Anthem, so mod necessary to my vintage Gibson saddle. Needless to say, it sounds AMAZING!!! Highly recommend Baggs pickups for all acoustic players who are serious about preserving the characters of their instruments to the fullest extent available. Baggs castes, and they're coin' it right!!!

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

Just got this & tried it on my little Crate amp. Haven't had a chance to plug into a good amp yet. But even w/ that little and old amp, the sound is great, much better than the cheap inside-the-soundhole mic I had been using. Installed myself on my Martin SWD. Used 15/32" drill bit in end block rather than the recommended 1/2", for a closer fit. Clear, accurate amplification of the instrument's actual sound, which is great. Balance control adjustment is very sensitive, but works very well, especially on high end. Terrific product. It has converted my beloved acoustic into a capable acoustic electric!

i have been through three different guitars that sounded horrid when plugged in. My Guild's fishman and preamp combo never worked correctly and when/if it did, sounded wretched.
The microphone is totally different. I could not believe the sound quality that came from my guitar and this mic.
I only jokingly added I had to change my strings as a con; this task alone took more time and effort than the install which was simple.

I would love to give this pickup a stellar rating, but feedback issues prevent me from doing so. Installation was a breeze and the pickup sounds excellent at lower volumes. At higher volumes, I am getting feedback--even when coupling the Lyric with a Baggs Para DI. Also, any movement of the guitar against your shirt or pants literally gets picked up. I got this pickup to replace a buggy Taylor ES. It is certainly more reliable than that pickup and sounds much more natural, but feedback an sensitivity is an issue for me. I would recommend, but with these potential pitfalls. Going to keep playing with the pickup and preamp to try to dial in the right tone at higher volumes.

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

                                    Dear Readers,

I have searched years for this. Spent hundreds trying to amplify a dreadnought acoustic "Bluegrass" guitar for live performance. I was reluctant to purchase and had given up the option earlier because I was afraid that it would cause feedback on stage. Against my better judgement I purchased the "Lyric" from Musicians Friend because I knew that if I was dissatisfied they would give me a no hassle return option. I am so glad that I purchased this product! Playing Bluegrass Guitar on stage for many years has been frustrating to say the least. Of all the Bluegrass family instruments the guitar is the most difficult one of all to mic. (Especially if you are a flatpicker.) Ninety-nine percent of sound technicians are unsuccessful ninety-nine percent of the time when attempting to give your guitar any voice in the set other than rhythm. What I hear with the "Lyric" is now "My Guitar" and the audience hears me too ! In addition to the Lyric I am using a "Boost" pedal for my breaks. If you play Bluegrass guitar buy this! And finally hear yourself on stage. As another note if you want more control over your personal monitor level a small acoustic amp on stage as monitor with XLR out to the house mixer works well.

Thanks, Musicians Friend and LR Baggs

Comments about LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone:

I have an LR Baggs anthem that was professionally installed in my vintage Martin HD 28 so I expected the quality of the Lyric to be excellent and it is. I was a bit reticent about doing the installation myself, mainly about drilling a clean hole through the tailpiece without splits or chips. It seemed pretty straight forward though so I decided to take the plunge. There are youtube videos to show how it's done properly. If you're like me I suggest you watch several of them repeatedly until you're confident. The main points are mark the spot precisely, put masking tape over the area to prevent chipping the finish, start with a new sharp brad point 1/4" drill bit, then follow up with a new sharp 1/8" to 1/2" step bit. The hole will be clean & precise. You'll also want a telescoping mirror & a small flashlight to aid in placement of the mic etc., Those bits aren't cheap but I saved a substantial amount by doing it myself. Enough of that. The sound is true to your guitar played through a good acoustic amp. You'll no doubt fiddle around with the presence dial a bit to get the sound you want, but that is simple as well. I haven't gigged with it yet but I'm very happy so far.
