OVERVIEW

Superior live sound has never been easier.

New TriAxial Dynamic Technology allows the LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup to respond to the guitar's string and body vibrations, redefining what is possible from a soundhole pickup.

The L.R. Baggs M-1 is a humbucking pickup with a twist. In a common stacked humbucker, the second, lower coil cancels hum, but doesn't contribute anything positive to the sound. In fact, it can muddy the sound of the main coil. The M1 unlocks the second coil. This allows it to make a positive sonic contribution while maintaining the pure open sound of a single coil -- but without the hum.

The hum-canceling coil is suspended under the main coil by a tuned support that allows it to move in 3 dimensions. The primary coil moves with the guitar top and creates a body signal in the suspended secondary coil. This brings the M1 to life, with string and body sound all in one. It's like having a dual pickup system in your soundhole. The support is carefully tuned to control motion in all 3 dimensions. This allows you to selectively add the presence and realism from the body signal while suppressing runaway feedback.

Gold-plated 1/8" jack. The L.R. Baggs M1 Pickup includes a prewired strapjack harness and a 12' Mogami audiophile-grade cable.

FEATURES
Completely passive operation: no batteries to worry about

I bought this for my Rogue RA-100D Dreadnaught acoustic guitar because I wanted something that would boost my sound when needed and this little pickup met every expectation plus gave more. This pickup is passive so requires "no" batteries. It also has 2 installation methods. 1=comes with cable you can plug directly into pickup and out through sound hole, which in completely non-invasive to your guitar. 2=comes with strap jack, which requires a 1/2 inch hole drilled in endpin for installation. My Rogue did not have a pre-existing strap jack hole, but I easily drilled out 1/2 inch hole with a 1/8-1/2 tapered reamer and self-installed the strap jack. VERY pleased with sound and quality of this product and its easy installation. I will definitely consider this and other LRBaggs products in the future.

Unlike most of the other reviewers, this pickup is not what I had hoped for. I can't seem to get a good sound out of it, especially through a P.A. I have the Baggs preamp, and it still sounds thin and lifeless! I highly recommend trying this out on several amps before buying it.

Comments about LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup:

Compared to the similar Fishman product (Neo D Humbucker), this is more versatile in the sense that the pole pots can be adjusted and that it comes with the necessary gadgetry for both temporary and permanent installation. I like the adjustable pole pots because it allows me to tweak the sound, and in some cases the amplified guitar can sound more balanced than the actual instrument. The downside of the pole pots is that string spacing is an issue. It is a fairly quiet pickup, but (unlike the Fishman) picks up a little noise under extreme conditions. Depending on your system, you might need a pre-amp. Compared to the K & K mini, this is much more resistant to feedback. Less invasive than an under saddle transducer (I have the Fishman Matrix blend) and more reliable.

    impressive performance

    By N8-Dsmbx

Comments about LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup:

I bought this after trying a couple different pop-in pickups as well as the L.R. Baggs i-beam. Although I like the sound of the i-beam better than the M1, the i-beam was almost unusable on the loud stage of a rock club due to the feedback issues. The M1 has almost no feedback problems, and sounds awesome. A warning on installation: I drilled a hole in my guitar, then found out the depth on the strap jack was too shallow. I modified it to work, but it could be an issue for some.

    Great Sound, Flawed Design

    By d willis

    from South Florida

Comments about LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup:

I've always used a mic to record my acoustic guitar, but the ongoing search for new ways of recording and new tones led me to purchase and install the LR Baggs M1 Passive pickup. I'm glad I did. It sounds great and offers a new sound palette that has expanded both my recording and musical horizons. I'm using a Martin 000-18 and the pickup is running through a Great River Me1nv into an Apogee Duet interface. I tried plugging directly into the Duet, but the Great River had a more appealing sound and needed less gain than the Duet.

The only flaw that I can find in the Baggs M1 is the temporary installation method which requires that the external cord cannot be removed without removing the entire pickup. I chose the temporary installation because I didn't want to drill holes into an expensive guitar. I assumed that while the pickup would stay in the sound hole, the jack/plug assembly would be accessible and that the cord could be removed. It turns out that I was wrong. You can't just unplug the chord. This means that every time you put the guitar back in it's case, you also have to pack ten feet of cord. It's not a huge issue, but you would think that the pickup would be designed with this in mind.

Comments about LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup:

The tone of this pick up is great as is the clarity. The negatives I found is the location of the connector on the body and the mounting style. This type of mounting can damage the finish unless you are very careful. I don't recommend this for your high dollar guitars since the mounting is all plastic and in order to keep it from moving around you have to tighten the plastic piece against the body. Use cork or some type of foam. However this loss of contact is a negative since one of the sales features of the pick up is the cancellation and sound pickup through the body. I don't recommend taking it in and out and few manufacturers would recommend this for the body and finish. The sound is very good though and that was my primary concern but I wouldn't mount this in my Martin.

this is an extremely natural sounding magnetic pickup. when you tap the top of the guitar, you can hear it, the microphonic characteristics of this magnetic really deliver without any feedback problems. Sounds better than a Sunrise!

Comments about LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup:

This thing is great, It keeps the quality of the sound and is quality made. The only two thing I don't like about the M1 is that is very difficult to install. I own a seagull and the walls of the guitar are very thick, making it almost impossible to install. I had to unscrew the input cords cap to make enough room to even fit halfway through the hole. Also You need a pre- amp to even want to try effects. If you have a thick side-walled guitar or plan to use effects, I would not recommend this to you, otherwise its great!

    Great Pickup! Sounds AMAZING!!

    By PDelicious810

Comments about LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup:

I had one of these installed in my D-18. Kind of pissed that the active version came out after I got the passive one, but I dont think it affects the tone that much. I have never been a fan of acoustic pickups, but this one changed my mind. Always thought that the best sound came from miking, and it still does, no question. But, that's not always practical given the situation. Anyway, this pickup delivers tone. I use with an Para Acoustic DI which is a match meant to be, like PB and J. You really can't go wrong using this combo. It sounds good plugged directly into PA too, but best sound comes with using a Para DI preamp. If you need to plug in, this is the tool for you!!

Comments about LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup:

I put this in my Martins. OM Custom and vintage NYer for slide work. As for putting it in a high end guitar and worrying about maybe a couple little marks I could care less. I leave deeper pick marks on the finish. By the way it has not left any marks regarding installation. I'm sure you could if you torqued it down rather than just snug tighten the screws. If you want total sound then do it. I play soft and loud venues. I've also had undersaddle pickups. Nothing can compare. My only gripe is I tend to hit it with the pick and it makes a picking sound. So I have had to play back more from it. On my NYer I raised the poles a bit and its hot for bottleneck slide. Tell you what I'm considering wacking one into a National Resophonic I like it so much.

Tried a competitor's passive soundhole pickup with endpin jack, but it came with NO (and I mean zero) instructions- so I had to return it. LR Baggs is a great company, and I tried the M1- perfect! Hole drilled and pickup installed in less than an hour.

Works, sounds, looks GREAT. So happy.

Comments about LR Baggs M1 Soundhole Pickup:

I've been playing strats for 12 years and finally decided to dig in acoustics. Got my Epiphone DR100 loaded with this Baggs and like it pretty much. Perhaps a DI will not be a bad a ideia, since the pickup is passive. My acoustic isn't that good, the Baggs only sounds faithful to the guitar sound when plugged. So, better guitar, better plugged sound.

I first heard this pickup being used in a concert I was working. I went up to the lead singer afterwards and asked him what it was. Since then I've put it in all three of my acoustics. I even took out the stock pickup in my Gibson J-100 xtra and replaced it with this.

I love their sound, but I always like that I don't need to mess with the height of my saddle. If you can ream the hole for the endpin, the installation is a breeze.

People consistently comment on how good my guitars sound onstage.

I recently installed this in my Martin OM-21 and absolutely love it. Its small enough that it doesn't hinder the tone of the guitar too much (when playing it unplugged), and definitely picks up the top vibes. It sounds exceptional through my Fishman Loudbox and through a PA - though a preamp does help too). A great pickup from an outstanding company.

Paired with the Baggs Para Acoustic DI, I've played in all size venues and haven't even had a hint of feedback, no matter how we crank up our sound system!!!

I've installed this pickup on my Taylor GA3-12. The word is love, folks. With no EQ, its not dampening the sound of the guitar unplugged significantly, and when I amp it, I'm able to get the warmest, hum-free sound I could ever hope for. Personally, I prefer this to the Taylor Expression System, because I very much like the option of removing it completely. In the future, I'll be dropping these into any other acoustic I buy.
