I purchased several of these stands about 4 years ago to use in our Music Academy ... kids lessons, performances, etc. I must say, we've never experienced any of the problems described here and I would definitely purchase more stands if needed. I will say that the stands are pretty heavy-duty and sturdy, a feature good for use in dedicated space. Although it isn't the standard Manhasset all-metal, been around for decades, tried-and-true, for the money I don't think you can find a better stand. That said, if I were gigging more, I would probably choose a stand that didn't weigh as much as this one does ... who wants to tote around a heavy stand when there are lighter, suitable options. Conceivably, the plastic handles could be damaged but they are pretty substantial and, in my experience, they'd have to be handled pretty roughly in order for that to happen. Don't know if the other reviewer had a bad batch from the factory - entirely possible - or if the quality has changed since my purchase. In the end, I would purchase again and really like the stand for what we use them for ... and it sure saved over the Manhasset's, which are a standard tradition in the Classical/Jazz world I come from. They're sturdy like Manhasset but entirely portable - the best of both worlds in my opinion.

I needed a new Music Stand to replace the flimsy fold up one I'd been using for years. I saw this on the "Stupid Deal" and bought it. The major problem with this stand as delivered is the top flops. The section where it connects to the base has a gap that is a bit too large, the top part of the base is hollow and has 2 neopreme washers that can just slip inside. It's like they just cut a short piece of thin walled pipe, spot welded it and painted it black. I had to bend in the ears on the top with a pair of pliars to get it tight enough to even stay up. Using some washers inside the hollow connector at the top of the stand will help stabalize it firther. A friend has an older one and it's NOT like this. I probably should have just returned it but I needed a stand and this was cheap, so I just fixed it. Time will tell if the latches on the base hold up, if I get a few years out of it it'll be worth it. For the price, it's "ok" IF you don't mind modifying it, but as it arrived (at least the one I received) it was worthless. If I'b paid full price, one star would have been generous.

Comments about Proline GMS80A Conductor Sheet Music Stand:

Unfortunately this music stand was not usable until I made a major modification. The tilt adjustment for the music holder cannot tighten tight enough. Very poor design once I took it apart. I play in 2 groups, one is a big band with a folder full of 100 pieces of sheet music and the stand will not hold it without the music holder portion slowly creeping to a vertical position. It's not stripped, it's just that there are 2 pieces of rubber on either side of the adjuster that have to tighten up to each side of sheet metal pieces and the rubber slowly slips. The other band I play in is a wedding cover band and I use 1-2 binders of music and set lists. Again, the part of the stand that holds the music just cannot hold the binders in position. Again, they creep to vertical because it slips along the rubber pieces. My solution was to drill a hole in the head of the adjuster (the round head at the end of the top pole insert), then drill 2 separate holes in the sides of the sheet metal near where the original tightener goes. Then instead of a screw adjuster, I simply slip a two inch long 3/10" thumbscrew through the round head and the holes I drilled then I secure the end of the thumbscrew with a wingnut to hold the angle of the music holder in place. It gives me only 2 positions that way, vertical and the level of tilt I prefer, but at least I didn't have to throw it away. And luckily, it was on SDOD.

I have owned 2 of these for a number of years. They are great. Tough, easily adjusted, withstands folding and transport well. I ordered another, which is when the trouble started. On the new one, the tilt could not be tightened sufficiently to keep the desk portion from toppling over and dumping your music off. Exchanged it for a new one. Same problem, plus a new one - the clamp for the main vertical portion won't clamp tight enough, so your music sinks slowly down to the lowest position. After 2 tries, I am done. Returned for a refund.

Comments about Proline GMS80A Conductor Sheet Music Stand:

One of my bandmates has an older version of this stand and it's solid. However, the quality control of these stands has really gone downhill in the last couple of years. I went through two of these before giving up on these. The clutch mechanisms barely hold the stand in place and will obviously wear out in short order. Also, no matter how hard I tightened the top portion of the stand it wouldn't get tight enough to hold even a music binder of modest weight. Another bandmate has ordered these recently and experienced the same problems. Don't buy this stand!

I saw this wasn't the highest rated stand on here, but I got it on sale... I figured, it's just a stand, how bad could it be??

                  Answer: Bad.

I just received this item and am ready to return it. The leg and height adjustments are fine and sturdy, but the knob to adjust the stand/table angle is utter trash--it holds no tension!! I can't turn this knob tight enough to stop the stand from slipping back into vertical position and my music falling on the floor. All I have on my stand at the moment are about 10 loose sheets and a 20 page songbook (paperback)--forget about writing on the music or god forbid putting a binder on here!

Honestly, I'm pretty annoyed that this piece of trash is even in production. This thing is supposed to do ONE thing and it can't do it.

It seems many have had the same experience as myself and yet others seem to be fine with their stands. At the least, if you buy this, you're rolling the dice with what is obviously a manufacturing consistency problem.

Clamps on vertical posts would not hold. Required installing shaft lock collars to hold height position. Book plate dumps everything off. Installed fender washers by friction disks & installed a hex nut to TORQUE down TIGHT. It's not all bad. I do like the tripod, large diameter vertical shafts, and the19 5/8" plate width though. If you can work around the two problems noted, it is worth the stupid deal of the day price that I paid.
