These sticks last a lot longer if one adds an additional wrap (duct tape) about an inch from the business end of the stick. It does not make an appreciable difference in the tone one gets when striking the drum but does reduce the incidence of splintering. They still will do that if you strike a cymbal with the tip of the stick instead of the edge. But, they no longer will splinter just from a rim shot. They seem to last for about 20 hours of playing -- pretty expensive when you think about it. But I really like the tone they produce and so do the others in the bands I have played with (we do not blast the airwaves).
By the way, I received the order in two business days even though I did not pay for it!

My main issue is sound and duribility. If you're desperate for a silencer tool, Just buy a set of mufflers and use a regular pair of wooden sticks. The problem with sound is that nothing sounds as full or rich while using the bamboo hot rods. That's not my main problem though, I could cope with the sound. It's the duribility that is a never-ending problem. Before our band obtained working amps and monitors I had to play much more quietly. I played fairly lightly for an hour and there was just a couple pieces remaining. So My main recomendation is just to purchase amplifiers to kill some of the drum volume or if you can't afford it just pick up mufflers.

Comments about PROMARK Hot Rod Sticks:

Astonishing that I've played for nearly forty years and only tried these recently. I really like them for quiet playing and small rooms. Four stars instead of five because the tips are very sharps and will chip coating on coated heads within a few minutes of playing. This can be remedied by sanding a bevel on the outside edge of the bundle using a drill press and sanding drum. Once this mod is made, five stars.

    These are great!

    By Gil Pulliam

Comments about PROMARK Hot Rod Sticks:

These are great to use if you play in low to medium volume gigs and they really do give everything a nice sound. I like them because I can really get a large dynamic of volume with them pretty easily. I noticed a few folks complain about the rods breaking or being chipped or not sounding good on your snare. Do this - about and inch down from the top of the stick, wrap about and inch wide peice of duct take around 2-3 times, make sure its a tight wrap. This really extends the life of them and allows you to get more crack out of your snare and little more precision out of your symbals.

I have nothing bad to say about these sticks! I've used them for years! These may not be for everybody but I play in church and a lot of the times, these are perfect! Of course these are not for aggressive playing but with acoustic music or contemporary christian music , these are perfect!

Comments about PROMARK Hot Rod Sticks:

I only rated them a 4 because they may splinter after one show if you are an aggressive drummer. I can get about 2-3 4 hour show out of these playing a small acoustic show.

Comments about PROMARK Hot Rod Sticks:

Play in a church band and these are the ticket for lower volume. A lot thicker than a 5A so don't expect to roll with these but surprisingly they have good bounce. The tips started separating but no prob, I just put some reinforced fiberglass shipping tape (3/4" wide) about an inch or so from the end and they work fine and should last a lot longer. Liked them so much, ordered another pair right away.

Comments about PROMARK Hot Rod Sticks:

I call these "soft sticks" cause that's the nice sound they give you. In between brushes and sticks, these work well for quieter songs and for some smaller venues. I use mine a lot just for practicing cause my practice room is rather small and so I don't drive the neighbors batty. They also have their own distinct sound for your creative juices. Response on the heads is pretty good, about what you'd expect from "soft sticks". They do tend to wear semi-quickly as the individual rods break off occasionally but quite a few can break before needing replacing. I like these overall. I recommend buying a couple pairs.

These are okay sticks. The ARE Hot Rods and a few outer dowels can break if you try to play too heavy. Very good if for light low-disturbance sound.

I recommend adding an extra tap ring a inch or two below the tips for extra protection.

If you use them as intended, they'll do the job.
Good medium between wire brushes and sticks. Nice for gigs where you have to play quieter.
If you play electronic drums and cymbals, they'll last for ages. If you play Acoustics, they'll get hammered in a short time. Metal cymbals are these stick's worst enemies.
A bit pricey, I think, for what you get, but you probaly already know that, since you've gone through several sets of these before.

I love these things! I just wish they had a longer shelf life! I was playing with these (brand new out of the box) so I could hear my headphones one day, and they didn't even last one song! I guess La Villa Strangiato was to much for them... Hahaha! Anyway, for unplugged jams or small venues, these are way cool. They sound great on drums and cymbals, and they have a great weight and balance to them.I'll keep buying and breaking these babies!

Comments about PROMARK Hot Rod Sticks:

I thoroughly enjoy the playability of Hot Rods dowel sticks. I use them in Contemporary Praise & Worship at church, and they do deliver a slightly less overbearing sound than my regular sticks. However, my colleague and I (we have 2 different praise services) snap off the dowels on a regular basis. I'm lucky to get 4 or 5 services out of a pair, whereas he can only get 2 or 3 before too many dowels are snapped to use them. Great product that needs some evaluation of materials...

These aren't that great of a rod stle style stick. They make my snare sound like crap, and the single dowels break way to easy. For about $5 more, you can get some FLIX sticks. They don't break, and you can buy them in a variety of sizes, styles, and colors. The FLIX sticks make your drums sound the same as they do with regular sticks, but they have a quieter volume. I highly suggest not buying any of the Promark rod style sticks. BUY FLIX!!!!!!!!

I play for 3 different worship teams every weekend. Hot Rods are great for soft intimate to hard driving beats allowing varied expression of the move of the Spirit. The only weekness is in real hard driving beats when using the edge of the cymbals I will tear them up a bit. Great response and great for cymbal work during softer measures. I am rarely mic'd and find them powerful enough for most situations, when mic'd there is no limit. I play DW Custom Maple with gold hardware and these sticks bring out the best in the best.

I bought these on sale for about $11 with free shipping just to try them out. I have played for over 40 years and need to keep in shape for gigs. These sticks will make you play better if you play all your stuff with them, they make you work harder and that builds up your muscles. I have a set in my living room and have a lot of what I call "Drum Songs" that are a collection of hard drum songs, but also just hard snycopated patterns mostly hard rock on my ipod. I play along with my loud stereo, this is how I learn my songs for a gig. After a couple of weeks playing these I have noticed that when I go back to my regular sticks I play play better and more controlled. I recommend these for anybody that wants to get better without having to play at full volume and annoy your neighbors. I might never use these for a gig, but I use them every day for practice.
