Seymour Duncan

A sweetheart pickup for a legendary guitar.

The Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue pickup delivers traditional, sweet and even tone that just drips with all the sparkle and twang you'd expect out of a truly righteous Tele guitar.

When Jerry Donahue needed a touring guitar with the exact same sound as his prized '52, he turned to Seymour Duncan, who accurately duplicated the warm, punchy tone of their bridge pickup. Seymour used Alnico II rod magnets and a special wind for increased sustain. Symmetrically staggered pole pieces mirror the fingerboard radius and assure that the Jerry Donahue pickup gives you exceptionally balanced string-to-string response.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue Electric Guitar Pickup:

I bought this pickup to replace a the bridge pickup that comes in a 2012 Telecaster. My telecaster has an alder body and maple neck.

The Jerry Donahue pickup was easy to install. To avoid phasing problems with my Twisted Tele neck pickup I just reversed the black and white wire coming out of the Twisted Tele pickup. This was easier than following the procedure that came in the instructions with the JD pickup, where you cut a wire on the pickup and solder another one to your guitar. I did have to raise the Twisted Tele pickup to even out the sound of the two pickups and I adjusted the JD pickup to the Fender vintage pickup height recommendations.

I have been playing the same 11 pound Les Paul Custom for 31 years and my audience asks for it. They weren't going to give my Telecaster a chance. After I replaced the pickup in my Telecaster my fans could not believe it. I got so many compliments on the sound of my guitar, so I can play my 7 pound Telecaster more, and give my back a break!

I play a variety of songs, rock, rock and roll, rockabilly and blues. The notes are so clear your audience will hear every one of them, even the mistakes. I play through a 14 watt Victoria all tube tweed amp with a Jensen speaker. After the amp heats up and by the last set of the night, my Telecaster comes alive. It's hard to explain, it's like a compressed sound, like a woman singing. You will have to hear it for yourself. If you want the JD pickup to twang it can, just pick a little closer to the bridge.

This pickup is a keeper. At first it sounded bright, but i just rolled off the treble control on my amp. I highly recommend this pickup.

52 Hot Rod Telebration Bridge PU Upgrade

    By John Cox

    from Oklahoma

Comments about Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue Electric Guitar Pickup:

Great instructions included with different wiring options. Easy to install with minimal skills required.
Awesome sound with perfect balance with the neck humbucker. The original bridge pickup just sounded washed out and lower power which required an adjustment in the volume control when switching to the bridge.

    '52 Tele Pick-up

    By Tom McNaLLY

    from Florida

Comments about Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue Electric Guitar Pickup:

The pick-up itself works great and I'm very pleased. I had trouble understanding one thing though. Seymour Duncan produces the pickup specifically to be installed in the telecaster guitar, but yet manufactures the pickup out of phase with standard fender products. I installed the pickup myself and only realized the phase issue AFTER I put the guitar back together again. That was my bad, of course. So I took it apart again and followed the instructions contained in the pickup case and everything was fine. My questsion is, why would they do that? The only logical thing I could come up with is that they want you to buy and replace BOTH pickups insteaad of pairing a SD with a standard Fender. That left a bad taste in my mouth...

A truly great Tele bridge p'up

    By Peter S Hickey

    from Tempe, AZ

Comments about Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue Electric Guitar Pickup:

I put one of these into my '85 MIJ Squier along with a Vintage '54 a couple of years ago and it's been nothing but golden. It screams like a banshee when you want that but it can also mellow out and sound great on the blues. The Donahue is a brighter pickup than the vintage Fenders (which I have in my '52 Reissue and '52 Vintage Hot Rod Teles) and has more presence as a lead pickup. It will definitely and massively improve the sound of any cheaper Tele such as a Squier or MIM Fender. It does buzz but it's a single-coil so that's only to be expected. The Donahue was the Tele lead pickup of choice for the late, great Robert Quine and he used to give them to his friends who played Teles. I very highly recommend this pickup.

    TWANGTASTIC

    By T.D. Brando

    from Milwaukee WI

Comments about Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue Electric Guitar Pickup:

I dropped one in my '72 Tele Custom re-issue. Turned the guitar in to a tone demon. The pickup has incredible sustain and punch. Sound super sweet clean or with some drive. Absolutely worth every penny if you are looking to add more to your standard tele.

    Sweet tele pickup

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue Electric Guitar Pickup:

This pickup sounds great. I bought one and am now buying a second. It is very well balanced and transparent. The lows and mids are nice and full, and the highs are clear and not at all shrill. It gets that tele twang perfectly and if you roll the tone back a little you can totally rock out with some high gain sounds.
