OVERVIEW

A fantastic way to amplify acoustic guitar!

The Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic is an acoustic pickup that begs the question: "Why mix a magnetic pickup with a microphone?" Because, the magnetic pickup senses the guitar strings' vibrations while the mic accurately reproduces the complex and rich character of the acoustic guitar's tone. Blended together, the result is the most natural-sounding, 3-dimensional soundhole pickup. The Seymour Duncan Mag Mic is the first active, humbucking, magnetic soundhole pickup ever created. The SA-6 features a blend circuit and adjustable pole pieces--2 for each string. It uses Seymour Duncan's patented, hum-cancelling stack design to eliminate 60-cycle hum. Permanent or temporary installation is a snap, and the sound is amazing. Deep, rich lows; percussive mids; and shimmering highs. The SA-6 pickup accurately duplicates and amplifies your acoustic guitar's entire sound spectrum. The Mag Mic gets up to 500 hours continuous operation from a single standard 9V battery. You can attach N-size battery clips directly to the Mag Mic pickup for a completely self-contained unit.

This is an excellent pickup, and in my opinion captures everything you want in acoustic sound. Warmth from the mag and brightness from the mic. If you take the time to adjust the poll pieces it is really worth the effort. No acoustic is perfectly alike, so why go with a mag pickup that is preset like the others. Looks like a sunrise pickup which I like. I did have to cut a soundhole plug to fit in for live application, but that eliminated any possible feedback with the mic.

Great acoustic pick-up

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I recently installed this pick-up in my 1998 Taylor 422R (Grand Concert body - spruce top & rosewood body). It sounds amazing, especially with the mic turned up most of the way. It is responsive to technique and the location of where you pick the strings, but does pick up fret and other noise. Played through a Bose L1 - it is crisp and very true to the acoustic tone of the guitar. Plugged into a Fender Acoustasonic SFX II it is rich and very warm. Complaints - It does not seem to have a high output compared to factory pick-ups in other guitars I have played, but it is stronger than passive pick-ups I have tried. Also - the 12 adjustable polepieces are a great feature but one was seized in place and rounded out the allen key when I tried to turn it. Thankfully I could compensate by turning it's mate a little higher.I did the installation myself in about an hour and 15 minutes (including re-stringing and cleaning), and I was being slow and deliberate. Thankfully my Taylor has the endpin hole already drilled for the jack. Conclusion - I have been wanting to put a pick-up in this guitar for some time and SA-6 seems to be the perfect retrofit.

Great Pickup!!!

By russell harju

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

Great!
They are right when they say it's the best acoustic pickup on the market. For sure the best one I've heard. It will closely replicate the sound of your acoustic straight through a PA or you can hook it to your favorite amp to give it a little more electric sound. You can dial it with the master and mic volume controls. Pretty easy to install although 2 of the 3 drill bit sizes were not available at Home Depot (and were not 2 of the 50 bits i had in my garage) so I had to go to a specialty store. Not a big problem but a professional may be able to drill the hole cheaper than it would be to buy the drill bits. I love it.
Great quality and would expect nothing less from SD.
It is way more expensive than other alternatives but also sounds much better. It's worth it to me.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

The Semour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic is great sounding. I like the range of tones. You can adjust the mix and pole pieces...it's as close as I've heard to the natural sound, without that shrill piezo/pickup sound. The only negative for me was that it barely fit into the sound hole. I know it's only a minor thing, but having to slide the unit closer to the bridge clearly is going to be a different sound than if it had been located dead center of the sound hole (less vibration of the string). I installed it on a Parkwood that I liked because of it's bass response, which means a larger sound hole. Other than that, it works fine.

The best so far...

By DS-v3pk8

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

Terrific choice for any guitar that you don't want to make any permanent modifications to. I did drill and ream for the end pin jack, but even that could have been avoided if absolutely necessary. Sounds great in both a regular flat top acoustic and a Weissenborn style "Hawaiian" guitar, which was what I bought it for in the first place. But I liked it so much in the regular guitar, I bought another one! I previously used a Sunrise and a Baggs M1, which were very good, but the option of blending in the mic added more of a "real" acoustic sound. If I ever find anything better, maybe I'll give that a "5", but I am quite happy with this.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

this pickup is really awesome, i installed mine in my martin om28v and it really captures the delicate overtones perfectly. the pickup is easy to install and once the strings settle down a bit after changing it really sounds wonderful. one of the best features of this pickup is the way you can adjust the pole pieces to make each individual string louder or quieter, and since i do alot of finger picking this is invaluable!! i run all of this through a equinox pre amp to a marshall as100 acoustic amp and its outstanding, clear natural and the pickup is super responsive to playing style, and is an absolute wonder in the studio, very high end. hey if its good enough for Xavier Rudd and Laurence Juber its good enough for me. highly recommended!

it sounds great! the mic picks up what you hear, and the mag pick up flavors it greatly. try it with a quality guitar tube amp on the clean channel and be amazed! to my own surprise,i like it better than through the acoustic amp. and now i plug in even if i don't have to. it is just so nice to fill the room with rich beautiful sound.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I have tried other pickups, inexpensive variety, on my vintage Ovation guitar. I finally decided to do some research and purchase a pickup that would give me the tonal quality I desired when played through a high quality acoustic amplifier. This is the one!
Installation was no problem for me and I believe most guitarists would, also, not have an installation issue.

The only downside I could envision, right now, is having to remove the strings, on the guitar, to replace the battery. Not a major problem. Otherwise, when I plugged into my amplifier and started to play, I knew I had made a good decision.

I'm happy with it but now i have to upgrade the rest of my stuff to get the most out of the sound...it just never ends.
You have to play around with it once it's installed, but the sound is exactly what I was looking for. My Martin has a deep rich full sound and I wanted to record that on my PC. I also bought Mixcraft 5 and use a USB POD to link everything. I am very happy with the final sound quality. If I had a real studio it would be even better. The sound is better than any of the built-in pickups I tried on Taylor, Gibson and other acoustic guitars. I was looking for this pickup for a couple years, and now I have it.
          Easy to install, perfect sound
I was ready to pay any price for what I was looking for. The price was well below what I was expecting to pay.

Easy to install. Looks great on the guitar. Directions are good. Sounds awesome. Adjusted mix to 100% mic input and still no feedback issues. So far found about 60/40 to 70/30 mic to mag mix to be perfect sound. Highly recommend.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I don't want to sound like a rep from Seymour Duncan, but this thing is CRAZY. It's a little bulky because of the battery, but it's totally freakin' worth it for this sound. Onboard electronics are usually pretty tight, but with the microphone IN the pickup it's nuts. You can do percussive sounds on the wood of the guitar, and they are picked up and amplified with total clarity. I saw some guy use one live and my jaw dropped... It took some crappy acoustic soundhole pickups (that sounded horrible) for me to breakdown and drop the extra cash for the better quality.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I play live twice a week, and do a lot of studio work. We played an outside festival once on the beach and the soundman was shocked by the great acoustic tone of my guitar. (1980 Martin D-28) But I owe it to the SA-6 to get that sound to the PA! During a studio session we recorded an acoustic fingerpicked song using Pro Tools laying down three tracks of the guitar, one direct (SA-6), and two others using very high quality tube mics. During the mix I was surprised that the SA-6 captured the guitars rich tone better that these mics! I highly recommend this pick-up.

I was given a Sigma guitar and decided to make it an open-tuned special. So, when I looked into my choices, I had to go over many available models. I chose this Mag-Mic because it had the features that I wanted that would give me the best tones. Installation was a snap. I used a wire to feed the jack thru the hole I drilled in the side of the body. The supplied hardware hid the wires(nice). Testing thru the studio monitors revealed it's pristine voice(really nice). I played "No Expectations". I'm going to say that this little rig will please all. It's a little pricey, but well worth it. Thanks, Seymour.

This is my best pick for percussive guitar so far. It picks up slaps on the guitar side better than my LR Baggs Anthem Stage Pro. With the Anthem I need to have the mic at 100% all the time and it is still not really picking up slaps well, the Duncan can be backed off a bit and still get a loud enough slap to come through. Only down side is, with the mic up the slaps come through with mostly the high frequencies so I tame the highs while boosting the correct band of lows with a PEQ. All in all I'm very pleased so far. For normal finger style and strumming both the Baggs and Duncan sound different but both are very good sounding pickups with very little messing around to get a pleasing tone.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

Recently, I was trying to find good pickup for my 2012 Baritone 8-string LTD. The ES1 wasn't a good fit and my favorite Baggs Anthem SL wasn't either as it had too much pressure from the low B on the transducer. I even considered sending the thing back to Taylor for the ES2 upgrade which would've cost me three hundred plus shipping both ways--yikes!

And then this happened. I randomly remembered the Seymour Duncan Mag Mic sound hole pickup a few weeks ago. It had never been an option because I typically HATE sound hole pickups, but the youtube videos sounded great so I figured I would try it. The Mag Mic is a hybrid between a very nice humbucker pickup (twice the posts for a rich tone even without mic) and a condenser microphone. There's a volume knob and a blend knob that fades the mic in and out. The mic on 100% is still a blend with the pickup. It is thin and low key for being a sound hole pickup. The black was a very good choice as it looks very streamlined.

This is a game-changer! It sounds incredible and will be permanently installed in my guitar for sure. I just plugged it into my little Mackie 150W speaker and CRANKED the volume enough to hurt my ears and sat 3 feet from it with it pointed to the sound hole. ZERO feedback even with the mic all the way up. The sweet spot seems to be around 50-65% mic.

Lastly (yes, the end is near), the pickup comes with the option for an external (non permanent) installation with a cable that drapes gently outside the sound hole rather than having to drill an input jack. It can easily switch from guitar to guitar (although not in a live environment). This is an easy self install with a lot of options for how permanent it is. Keep in mind that after the install you will have to adjust the posts to get a good balanced sound from each string. However, this is a set and forget.

Overall, this gets 6 stars and I highly recommend and will use again.

Easy install, great sound! I've used it on both a D28 and Gibson 185 with good results.
