OVERVIEW

A humbucker pickup set that splits to either a full-size P-90 or a special Alnico-powered single-coil Rail pickup.

Until now, if you wanted humbucker, P-90, and vintage Strat tones, you'd have to haul three guitars to the gig but that was before the Seymour Duncan SHPR-1 P-Rails pickups. P-Rails feature a ground breaking, patent pending design allows a full-size humbucker to split to either a real deal P-90 or a traditional single coil. Perfect for a wide variety of styles including country, pop, surf, jazz, blues, classic rock, and heavy rock.

The humbucker sound is full and expansive, owing to the mismatched coil configuration. The P-90 pickup is a super fat. And the Rail coils, when used together, sound like the 2 and 4 "in-between" positions in a great Strat.

P-Rails can be used in any guitar set up for a traditional humbucker or Trembucker. A single P-Rails will bring added dimension to your guitar sound. However, to optimize the unique splitting capabilities and get the best single-coil Rails tones from your Seymour Duncan pickup, use a neck and bridge set.

To get both humbucker and P-90 tones, use a two-way switch (push-pull or mini-toggle). To have humbucker and P-90 tones and bring in the added dimension of the single-coil Rail, use a three-way switch (DPDT on-off-on).

Been playing for 30 years + and this is the most versatile pickup since the stratocaster!I used to carry 2 or 3 guitars to a gig, now only one due to the airline baggage restriction! I've got a Les Paul and a PRS, both with a set of PRails and triple shot mounting ring. For me the best way to really get a very usable rail sound is to mount it further away from each other, meaning the P90 closer together and the rails further apart. I can get a very close tone of a strat that way.I love this setup and the P-Rails!

I installed a matched set of P-RAILS in my Carvin DC-127. This guitar has a neck-thru solid body, maple neck & center and alder wings. Following the diagrams on SD's site, I wired each pickup to a 3-way toggle that let me choose parallel humbucker, rail, or P-90 modes.

At home, playing by myself, they sounded interesting. Live, though, when bass and keys were involved, my guitar completely disappeared in the mix.

Output was not the problem. These are plenty hot in HB and P-90 modes. (The neck pickup is quite a bit hotter than the bridge, which forced me to install separate volume controls for eah pickup.)

The P-90 sound was best IMO, although I wouldn't mistake it for a "real" P-90. I could never get a good live tone in humbucker mode; I was looking for a full sound with a nice sparkle on top, and it just wasn't there. Rail output was so low as to be almost unusable.

Maybe it was this guitar, I don't know; but the P-RAILS just didn't work for me. Fortunately, I was able to sell them for most of what I paid.

    Seymour Duncan P-Rails Set

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

I used these pickups in a guitar I build using Warmoth parts. I'm very happy with them, great usable humbucker and single coil sounds. In the past I've tried coil taps/splits, and have never gotten a good single coil sound out of it.

These really do the trick, when in the rails mode I can get the 3 sounds I use most out of a standard strat, twangy bridge, sizzley combined, and blusey neck. The P-90 mode is really versitle, a little more punch than a strat single coil, so it works well for going back and forth from rhythm to lead. And the humbucker mode has that Les Paul sound to it, fat, creamy and a lot of punch.

These might not be for everybody, I really like them because I prefer pickups with a classic sound/output. Definately not for people who want high output, or super heavy sounds. But they do give 3 accurate classic pickup sounds in one guitar.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

These are without a doubt the best pickups that I have ever played through. After 30 years playing professionally I've finally found the perfect pickup. It does it all, single coil tone for chord work, P90 tones for raunchier stuff, and amazing humbucker tones. I have them in my Les Paul going into a Fender Super Reverb and without anything else I can get 90% of any guitar tone. I can't say enough about how great these are.

These pickups are just "WOW!" I own an '86 PRS & (for a spare) a PRS SE 24. I put a set in the SE & it actually can do more than the '86! Pro wired with 2 mini-switches, I get 15 sounds! 3 sounds each alone & 9 duals! I can't say enough about these fantastic pickups! Well-worth their price.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

Love the way these sound and the versatility of these pickups. The only reason I wouldn't give them 5 stars is the fact that I had to bend the mounting tangs on both pickups to get them to sit in the center of the SD mounting rings. I was also dissapointed in the craftsmanship. QC seemed a little lax compared to several SD products that I've had in the past

I just installed a P-Rail in the bridge (59' humbucker in the neck) in my Ibanez Artcore Hollowbody and wow. I mean WOW! I love these pick-ups! I used the Seymour Duncan TS-1 mounting ring switch for the installation and they work great together. I am now planning on swithcing out the stock USA Fender neck/middle pick-ups and previously installed "Pearly Gates" humbucker in my USA Stratocaster for 2 P-Rails (neck & bridge).

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

Had a friend install a pair of these with the triple-shot mounting rings on a PRS SE c24. The flexibility is incredible, and the tones are overall outstanding, especially when using the p'ups in combination. Gave it 4-stars instead of 5 only because the P90s sound just a bit lighter than a full-out P90 roar, and the series humbucker doesn't have a deep crunch to it - but my goodness, if they could do all that then they'd be the only pickup that anyone would ever use. The most intriguing settings (both clean and overdriven) include Bridge Series/Neck P90, Bridge Parallel/Neck Rail, and Bridge Rail/Neck Rail. Major kudos to Seymour Duncan for this innovation.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

Great pickups and super cool concept.
Extreme tonal range for an extreme tonal palette.
These things are rock solid. The only problem I had was that the magnet spacing of the bridge pickup did not perfectly match my string spacing. The neck pickup matched just fine though. Sound quality is fantastic and you will spend endless hours exploring new tonal ranges. I was a little disappointed in the tone of the rail single coil; it just didn't have enough midrange for me. However, the P90 and the series and parallel humbucker positions sound great.
I would say that these pickups are priced just right for their possibilities you are getting out of them.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

My 76 Les Paul had not seen the stage for the last 4 years...The lousy pickups in it were very 1 dimensional and that 1 dimension was not very good...The Seymour Duncan P-rails have brought this excellent playing guitar back to life...I am using the switchable pickup rings and have multiple tones at my fingertips without having to cut or drill into a classic guitar, and also no pesky push/pull pots...I am using a Boss ME70 for pre-amp and effects...The tones are incredible...playing cover music requires a decent variety of tones (if they are to be covered properly)...My band mates have noticed the improvement, but my sound man has told me "Never, ever bring that old Ibanez again! The Les Paul with the P-rails is the only way to go"
Just bought another guitar...I am thinking P-rails for that one too.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

I recently installed a set of P-Rails with Triple-Shot Mounting Rings on my PRS SE Custom Semi-Hollow and it's now my #1. I've always been a single-coil guy, and my (previous) main guitars were a PRS 25th Anniversary Soapbar Mira and a Fender Tele with Dimarzio Area T's. Since I've installed the P-Rails on the PRS SE Semi I can't put it down. I play in a band that does about half originals and half covers, and the P-rails help me cover a ton of ground. Our originals are very classic harmony rock and 70's R&B (think the Eagles and ELO), and we cover everyone from The Beatles to Pink Floyd to Rush to U2 and Oasis to The Black Keys and My Morning Jacket. The P-90 sound is fantastic. Not quite as hot as my Mira, but also MUCH lees noisy. Great chime and attack, and that satisfying P-90 bite and growl! Both humbucker settings are really usable depending on which amp (River Chubster 40 or Vox Bruno) and effects I'm using, but they both retain a great high-end sparkle that is critial for me. The The rail single coil sounds are probably my least favorrite, but I still use them and like them when I do. Great for that 70's strat-y spank and big high-headroom clean tones. Things really get interesting when you start experimenting with both pickups. Some AMAZING tones there. The guys in band keep raving about my new tone, and my tone has always been good. I can't say enough about these pickups. I can't see using anything else for live shows from this point on. Love love love them!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

I have read some lukewarm reviews of these pups, but I decided to try them nevertheless. I have a custom solid-body guitar, and have been in pickup hell with it for a few years. I have tried several different pickup combos, even some boutique-level, and never been particularly happy. But these SD's are working great for me. The guitar was already equipped w/ 3-way switches, so these pups can be set in single-coil mode (which does come with a significant volume drop), humbucking mode (sounds great!), and P-90 mode, which sound fantastic to my ears. In particular, I was enjoying using the middle pickup setting (both pickups on), varying which mode each pickup is set on, and using the volume knobs to blend them. Gives me a million different tonal possibilities. For the price, these SD P-Rails are great.

I purchased a set of p-rails to replace the humbuckers that came with my 1991 fender jaguar. I've had them installed with the triple shot mounting rings for 2 days now and i am blown alway with the wide range of sound you can get from these. the bridge pickup is a bit quieter on some settings but other than that they are a great choice. Love the clean jangle quack single coil sound, the fat p-90 sound, and the muddy humbucker sound as well as the ability to mix and match them. They took a guitar that i was already in love with and forced me to marry it!

The Triple Shots give you great flexibility, and getting Strat, Tele, and humbucker textures is very handy. The big surprise is the 12-string. Using those additional combinations gets me much close to my idealized Rickenbacker sound. I own a 360/12, so I could make an excellent comparison.
The triple shots are a bit flimsy feeling until installed. Somehow, I don't see these being trouble free for the long haul, but work great and super-easy installation. I only wish I had done this sooner.

I had these setup by a custom electronics shop to work with push-pull pots and a standard 3-way toggle. This is the way to go if you can. Lots of combinations. To my ears, the rail Single coils are the weak link but can still come in handy for rhythm playing, the humbuckers are above average with decent output, and the P-90s are superb--especially combined with the toggle in the middle position.

I put a set of P-rails with the Triple Shot Mounting Rings in an Epihone Sheraton and I fell back in love with this guitar. They really do cover all of the tone bases and with the mounting rings I didn't have to attempt to change anything on the tone pots going through the F hole. I just spliced into the existing wiring. I did have to trim a bit on the guitar to get them to fit properly and I did have to drill a couple new holes. But I'm fine with that! This guitar is NOT for sale and it won't be in the future...she's a keeper for sure so I didn't mind the minor modifications.

I put a set of these in my Epi G400 SG. The P-90 settings sound really good and it is nice to have the option to have a humbucker sound with the rail and P-90 coils turned on. I coupled these with a set of Triple Shot Pickup Mounting rings and it made for a very easy install. Very simple to switch between coils while playing.

Installed these in a custom guitar, really like what I'm hearing so far. In particular I liked using the middle pickup setting (both pickups on), with the bridge in humbucking mode and the neck in P-90 mode, and then using the volume knobs to tweak the balance. Lots of different sounds at my fingertips.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails - Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

I play in a church band. These pickups work great for me as I have a large variety of sounds I need to emulate during a normal church service. These do the trick. While they won't replace a really nice strat or set of humbuckers, overall they do sound really good, and I doubt many of the people listening would be able to tell the difference between these and the real thing.

I installed 2 push pull pots on tone knobs on my Epiphone Les Paul standard and dropped these in place of the old stock pickups. I got a wiring diagram from Seymour Duncan's website. These are definitely much better than stock pickups I previously had.
