OVERVIEW

One of the highest output pickups made.

The Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rail Stacked Single Coil Pickup is one of the highest output pickups made. It's a humbucker that fits into a normal single-coil pickup slot, so you get noise canceling without cutting a large hole in your guitar. The 2 thin blades with powerful coil windings give you the incredible sustain and fat, full sound that's needed for playing heavier rock music. This Seymour Duncan SHR-1 pickup responds to the subtlest finger movements.

Completely transforms your Strat, I put one in the bridge position and it's amazing. It sounds like a humbucker in all it's glory, but still has a little Strat to it. Quiet as a mouse though, even in extreme high-gain settings. I'm not a big SD guy but this pickup is a must-have.

I also installed a mini-toggle switch to go from humbucker to single coil on the hot rail, and series/paralell in other switch positions. Seymour shows you how in the diagram. It's worth the trouble. I don't like push-pull knobs but you can do it that way too.

Important to note, it's in the back of the instructions if you are mixing SD pups with other brands, then you may have to reverse the black and green wires from the diagram to get them in phase. If they sound real thin and nasal, switch to the black or green wire as the hot wire, whatever the reverse of what you have is.

Put a couple DiMarzio 'area' pups in the other slots and this thing is loaded for bar. Fearlessly crank it up with a lot of overdrive, tube screamer, the whole nine yards and it won't make any noise, just music.

Wish they had these 40 years ago, we had terrible power boxes, flourescent lighting, aluminum wiring, dimmers, all kinds of horrors faced us at gigs and when we cranked up our amps it sounded like the generators at Hoover Dam firing up! But this and the DiMarzio "area" pups fix this for good.

I used the SHR-1 (neck version) in the neck position of my Fender Strat (alder body, rosewood fingerboard, 500k pots). First let's talk about the clean sound. It's very dark and muddy. Lacks versatility. Don't expect any sparkle out of it. I can't say the tone is poor - it's just limited. Paradoxically, SHR-1's character ecouraged me to use my guitar's clean sound in an interesting, unconventional way. Great discovery, but surely accessible with other pickups as well. So no nice & beautiful clean chords or single notes. Let's go to the distorted sound. That's what the pickup was made for. Very usable for hard rock/metal rhythms and solos. But again, dark and muddy. That's OK with heavy music but if it could get a bit brighter I would be happier. Remember, I used it with 500k pots and it was still dark. If you use it with 250k pots (standard single coil pickups guitar's pots) the sound is even darker. This pickup will please you only if you play mostly heavy music and don't need bright clean sound. Or if you look for something untypical, but this will bore you very soon. Coil splitting doesn't work good in this pickup - it was too quiet. All in all, if you need versatility the SHR-1 is not for you. If you play metal I think you'll like it. I replaced SHR-1n with SSL-7 Quarter Pound, very good choice in my opinion (powerful single coil pickup).

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

The gain you get from this unit is very intense . The pinch harmonics and tap harmonics are yours to command , but you need to take your time getting on them.
The packaging of the unit is very good , and the instructions are easy to follow.
The wires are tiny , and you need a 75 watt soldering iron to make a good solder joint , and this is not for someone without experiance at soldering.
How about a wake-up call in your studio from your Strat with Hot Rails????
Yes I am impressed at the gain and the kick of this SHR-1 Hot rails unit I installed at the bridge.
I have been playing since the 1950's and I have heard a lot of guitar talk and fluff.

This is the best thing I have ever used in all my years.
This unit is beautifuly designed , and it is easy to install ( providing you know how to work on guitars ), and the instructions are great.
The packaging is top of the line and the unit is Ultra Quality.
If you are not handy with this type of work , you need to get professional help from your local music store.
You won't see another unit as well made , and for what you get in performance , this is a real bargain.

Thia pickup is amazing. It does take some skill to install as soldering is required and basic wire diagram reading skills but my guitar sounds monster now. One inexpensive Squier Strat + SHR1 Hot Rail = one awesome sounding guitar that easily stacks up against much more expensive guitars in sound quality. Very pleased with this purchase!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

I'm bringing a squier strat to life by ripping it apart and making it pretty with new parts, new pickups, and such. The first thing I decided to do was put rail pickups on the guitar. (Cool Rails in the neck, VIntage Rails in the middle, Hot Rails in the bridge.)
The sheer power coming out of this pickup is astounding. Pieces like these put other companies to shame. It is very articulate, very powerful, and the casing looks very sleek. i'm now a proud owner of a set of Seymour Duncan Rails pickups.

I put this in my 2012 American Strat bridge position. I was not satisfied with the single coil for heavier sounds. I put this in and my guitar is so much more versatile, I can get the great clean sounds from the 2 single coils and awesome distortion from the hot rails in the bridge.

I have had tons of guitars and many different pickups over my years of playing, but the best tone and sound I have ever gotten out of any of my guitars came from the Seymour Duncan hot rails pickup in the bridge of a standard Mexican Stratocaster I owned many years ago. Im going back to hot rails. You can do iron maiden, 80s hair metal, thrash and more. Once you play one of these, it will change you forever.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

So I do a lot of pickup testing instead of reading about them...I find this is the only real way to see if you like something and if it will fit into your setup. I play both les Paul's and Strats but only use marshall and Orange amp heads for recording. Every now and then I have a need for a Strat tone when recording. I have purchased every set of high end boutique single coil Strat pickups you can think of and I keep taking them back out and putting in the Duncan rails! I just can't take the single coil buzz when recording. I have an American Vintage 70s swamp ash Strat that has the hot rail in the bridge, the vintage rail in the middle and the cool rail in the neck and this has become my go to Strat when recording. I also keep another American Deluxe Strat handy, loaded with straight vintage rails in all three positions. It's simple....if you want great Strat tone that a bit more aggressive and without the buzz then buy the hot rail for the bridge and the cool rail for the neck. If you want a more natural Strat tone that's a bit more vintage and authentic sounding then get the vintage rails and put them in whatever positions you want the more vintage sounding tone. Regardless, you absolutely can not go wrong with the Duncan rails. Like I said, at first there was no way I was going to put rail pickups in a 2000.00 stratocaster. I thought that might be a joke....boy was I wrong!

The tone quality is pretty boring. It has a good vintage sound which comes in handy for playing old dirty blues, and the output is ok, but next to my Dimarzio D-activator it is really weak and I barely find any use for it. Dimarzio seems to be the tone kings thus far, I also highly recomend the paul gilbert injector set...WOW!! Amazing tone and output.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

I have played Seymour Duncans for nearly 30 years now, and I wasn't disappointed with this pick-up. Compared to the JBjr, the Hot Rails isn't as subtle or versatile, but it gives a great sound for playing hard rock and metal.
The four conductors (plus ground) allow for multiple wiring options. I wired this for a simple coil split.

It's a great sounding humbucker--very hot output with high sensitivity and rich tone. Splitting the coil so I can get more traditional single-coil sound was a surprising treat--the pick-up is well shielded, so it's actually very quiet even when not using both coils--but it will never sound like a traditional Strat single-coil, nor would I want it to.
                    Extremely well made.
Decent price for it on Musician's Friend and well worth it for the quality of this aftermarket pick-up.

I purchased the Seymour-Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails to team up with two Lace Sensor Gold pickup in my Stratocaster. Wow. The difference in output is amazing, and it gives me versatility that I would never have had with the standard pickups. I can go from Gilmour and Hendrix tones with the Lace Sensor in the neck to downright abusive tone in the bridge. Sounds positively brutal paired with a high gain amp. Unfortunately, you look kind of goofy playing with high-gain distortion on a Strat:)

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

This pickup was just what I wanted! I was apprehensive to change my pickup but my bridge PUP had a ton of buzz and very thin sound. I was looking for something where I can play with more sustain and more gain when playing blues/rock. This PUP made my guitar have a 'humbucker' tone and response and it sounds AMAZING. I could not be happier with this purchase. If you're looking to get a better tone from your strat, I can't think of a cheaper and more effective mod. Highly recommend!

i got this pickup for the bridge on my mexican strat and i must say it was a great decision. i was somewhat worried that i would miss the sound of the single coils but as soon as i plugged it in i knew the old pickup would not be missed. this thing wails- it can handle all kinds of distortion, doesnt get muddy sounding, and it picks up even the slightest of finger movements so tapping, hammer ons, and pull offs are a breeze. pinch harmonics really scream on iti too. it was easy to install and the included wiring diagram was easy to follow. A++ to seymour duncan on this one

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

Had a Hot Rails in the bridge of my Strat for a while. It was excellent for overdriven tones but would distort too much on cleans. So I then decided to get an Area 67 to replace it. That worked for a bit, but I started to find the 67 too low output and too trebly. Having heard good things about it I decided to try the Rails wired in PARALLEL in the bridge position and the 67 in the middle.

Let me tell you! The 67 was made for the middle position and the Hot Rails in parallel is well balanced, vocal and twangy (almost Tele-like) and handles overdrive like a dream.

I'm falling back in love with my Hot Rails.

I replaced the Fender Fat 50 bridge pickup because I needed something with a bit more balls. I made the right choice since it gave me exactly what I was looking for. I kept the 250 k pot so that it wasn't so bright and I removed one of the tone controls and ordered a new pick guard and my strat plays like a whole new beast. It is quite as a church mouse and responsive like you can't imagine. I still get the traditional Strat sound with the middle and neck pick ups and even get a richer sound with the Seymour Duncan Hotrail on clean channels but when I kick on my dirty or crunch channels wow what a total difference.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

Hot Rails single-coil sized humbucker pickups are just what the doctor ordered for my Hohner G3T headless guitar equipped with Steinberger tremolo. This is the guitar that I take to work every day. It has every feature I need, but the stock EMG Select pickups are insipid and dull. The signal is so uneven that I couldn't even trigger my B9 organ pedal from the high E and B strings because the G, D & A strings are three times as loud as the first two strings. Don't even THINK about playing a lead guitar solo on a guitar where the first two strings are barely audible! I ripped out all three EMG pickups, and put in their place three Seymour Duncan pickups. The pickups were easy drop-in replacements. Even the spring-loaded screws lined up perfectly with the existing holes. I chose Hot Neck for the Neck position; Hot Bridge for the middle position; and a Pearly Gates TremBucker in the bridge position. Here's why. I want the neck pickup to sound like a Gibson or a Gretch Country Gentleman so that I can play jazz and country music. I want the middle pickup to sound solid body for all-around rock use, without the thin, twangy sound of a Strat. I'll use the bridge pickup to play the blues and get in yer face like Billy Gibbons. Note that all three have much more mid-range than most other pickups. The typical Strat pickup boosts highs and lows and cuts out most of the mid-range. Their peculiar EQ curve results in a more flat, full-range response when played through a Fender amp, because most Fender amps are very mid-rangy. Folks who like that sound call it "presence," but I call it "playing through the telephone" because over the phone you will only hear frequencies from 900 Hertz to 3,800 Hertz. Ok, so the usual Strat pickup compensates for the frequency response of the usual Fender amp, resulting in a high-fidelity sound. But I play through a high-fi amp so I need the pickups to supply mid-range. Moral: carefully check your EQ curves before choosing a pickup.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

Installation was a breeze. Do it when you will change strings. I did not use any of the fancy split coil wirings. Unsolder two wires, solder the hotrails in place. Be sure to do the Black and Green wire switch as recommended in the instructions. If you don't you may get some unwanted feedback. Also watch your pickup-strings gap. I heard people say its louder than the other single coils, not a problem for me.
The cool thing about this pickup, it fits into a regular strat slot without having to cut a bigger hole in your pick guard. Or buy another pickguard for that matter. Its a humbucker all rite. It thickens your sound and adds more sustain. That's why i wanted it. The bridge pickup on my american strat was too thin-sounding. Sounds terrible with high gain distortions. Very little mids. Hotrails has fixed this for me.
Built to match. Only thing i don't like is the super thin wires.
For an upgrade it is quite an investment. You can get a guitar with a humbucker for not much more. I have only started using it so i hope it holds up.
