Comments about Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage Staggered Guitar Pickup:
I got these as a set on a recommendation for a Mexican Fender I had. Blown away by the versitile sound. Positions 1,3,5 are Rock, 2,4 are Blues. Sound great on any amp, literally. I tried other SSLs in other guitars, and each time I was disappointed.
I recently got an early 1998 Telecaster 52 RI and loved the pickups. Heard they changed them from Alnico 5 (V's) to Alnico 3 (III's). I never liked the sound of newer RI's but this one was awesome.
Looked it up and? These SSL-1's are fashioned after Fedner Alnico-V's! What a surprise. Can't go wrong in a Tele OR a Strat. Wow.
In summary, these pickups sound like you EXPECT single coil pickups to sound. I know that is a personal thing. For me? Aggressive and Punchy but with buttery clears and great Mids.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage Staggered Guitar Pickup:
These are the holy grail of single coils. Seriously. They cover so much ground. From blues to neoclassical. My search ended when I found the SSL-1's. They went into a Squire Standard with a Pearly Gates in the bridge. They pair perfectly and I will not be changing either pickup.
You cannot beat the price these things are selling for.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage Staggered Guitar Pickup:
I do have a gripe about how it was shipped. I made a 1,700 dollar purchase from MF. These were thrown in the guitar package to freely fly all over the place. I also order the SSL-5 for the bridge. Well one SSL-1 is on backorder, not a problem. However, when the package came in, all the little items were moving freely about the box. The plastic boxes the pickups came in were shattered. I expected more from MF on the handling of these items. We'll see if they work when I set up the Strat I ordered. I gave it a mid range review right now. I'm just glad that the guitar was well protected in the boxes. MF could have done things better when packaging the smaller items for shipping. If wasn't UPS's fault, I blame MF for this one.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage Staggered Guitar Pickup:
I put this in the neck of an American Strat for some good bluesy, clear tone. The best part about this pickup is that it has a great bass and a pretty good midrange. Unfortunately, the highs lack a bit and there's no bite to it. When I play blues, it seems to be right at home, although I might switch to the neck or bridge for soloing. Any other type of music, especially those with some drive, really just don't come through this pickup. I think the overall problem I have with this pickup is that its very flat and mellow. My guitar had a set of Tex Mex's in it, and I just feel like this was more of a downgrade.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage Staggered Guitar Pickup:
I have an American Contemporary Stratocaster which I bought in 1991. It came with locking tremolo, a bridge humbucker and two single coils, one middle and one neck. The singles are wound fairly hot to match up with the humbucker and I wanted more of a classic tone from the neck position. I got the Seymour Duncan SSL-1 and installed it in the neck. The tone is fantastik. I did have some problems dealing with the high impedance of the humbucker and the 500K pots rather than the 250K pots that come in a Strat with all single coil pickups. I installed a TBX tone control to replace the ordinary tone control. That did the trick! The TBX allowed me to gently roll off the unwanted highs due to the low gain SSL-1 going through the 500K pots. This pickup produces the awesome glassy Stratocaster sounds that made the guitar famous. It still can get raunchy when driven hard enough with a compressor or volume boost pedal. I also have a Highway One Strat and I'm going to fill it with SSL-1s as well. That axe came with 250K pots and will sound purrrrfect! The quality is excellent and price is unbeatable. Features are simple, what you see is what you get: Its a single coil pickup with the best tone around!
Comments about Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage Staggered Guitar Pickup:
I put just one of these in my standard strat and it made a huge difference. My strat finally sounds like...a strat! It has a slightly overwound sound. I'd compare it to a Tex Mex with less of the country twang. Maybe more like Hendrix's sound. Sounds great and you really can't hardly find a pickup for less money.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage Staggered Guitar Pickup:
Put this in the neck position on my 64 Fender Frankenstrat and its sounds as good as or better then my 64 date stamped, may 15 64 fender pickup I have in the middle position. I would say if you wanted a vintage looking and sounding pup buy this one.
