All right, you're already reading reviews on drink holders so you already recognize the massively huge utilitarian value they bring to a musician and just want the straight scoop on this particular product compared to others. But in case you've not recognized their utilitarian value, below is a short test to determine if a drink holder is right for you. Step 1: has any receptacle filled with any form of liquid ever been placed on top of your amp, cab, monitor, or on the floor next to speaker cables, guitar cables, or power cables? If the answer is yes, your test is complete: you will benefit from a drink holder. If the answer is no, then the only place you've ever played is your living room and you probably don't need this product.

Ok, on to the straight scoop. I did a lot of searching and review reviewing before settling on the Vater cup. I'm very pleased with this purchase. Of upmost value to me was something that would attach firmly, and would hold a varied assortment of cup/bottle sizes. The Vater met and exceeded both of these requirements for me.

The Vater holder is made by a company that for the most part, caters to drummers. As a result, their stuff is built to withstand vibrations and banging. The Vater drink holder uses a two sided clamp (think of the hands on a legoman figure), which are both tied into a wingnut. Once the clamp is placed on your mic stand, drum kit, or DESK! (yes i use mine in the office now on non-gig days to save surface space and avoid spillage onto important documents), you simply twist the wingnut until such time as the clamp is tightened. So far, this clamp system has worked awesomely for me. Again, i've been able to attach the thing to non-rounded items such as bookshelves, my desk, and door jams... all with enough hold power to handle the weight of a drink.

While I originally set out to get a "swirlygig", I have not tried it or others like it and can not attest as to their reliability and functionality, but I do know that I wanted something that would actually grip my mic stand (not just hang off it), and the Vater cup has exceeded my hopes. There are several swirley gig reviews that complain of it being too big or too small for their particular mic stand. The Vater won't have that problem because the clamp design.

Just last week during a show a bartender was busy and by the time she brought the drink to me I was in the middle of a song. Instead of putting my drink on the ground or on my marshall head as used to be the case, i motioned to the cup holder with my knee and voila, my equipment was saved and the drink was immediately within grabbing distance.

I love my Vater cup holder, and you likely will too. From one musician to another... cheers!

I nearly forgot that I had ordered this product because it was on back order for months! When I got around to thinking about my incomplete order, I contacted the company to inquire about the status...only to be told that it was still on back order. It would have been nice if the company had been more proactive in keeping me informed about the back order status or they could have offered alternatives, including sending my money back. I was not impressed with the customer service.

Have one of these on a mic stand and one on cymbol stand. Both work beautifully. Hold cans, bottles, with a nice grip on the base. Easty to attach and eacy to remove when traveling; took the advice of a previous review and remove the cupholder when packing up gear for a gig.

This is big enough to fit the old-timey can huggers, and enclosed/deep enough so skinny bottles don't fall out or even tip. It's well made. I have no complaints

One of the best accessories I've ever bought.
I no longer have to worry about accidentally kicking my drink over and spilling it because I had to set it on the floor.
This makes whatever I'm drinking readily accesible.

Use it to hold my coffee mug. Mounted to High Hat, put the mug right where I want it and it is VERY stable.

One down side though -- it is NOT slotted for a mug handle. Twenty minutes with a dremel tool fixed that :)

It is solid metal (steel?) through out with a durable powder coat finish. Very tough.

Glad I bought it even if I had to modify it to make it work the way I wanted.

Comments about Vater Drink Holder with Clamp:

After putting new floors in my studio I decided to do something about beers on the amps, windowsills, and everywhere else, usually resulting in at least one floor spill per practice. So I bought 4 of these and clamped one to each mic stand. They hold to the lower part of mic stands perfectly; I don't know if they hold to the upper part, but they really don't need to. These things are solid, heavy metal construction, and are really wide and have a solid bottom with a rubber insert inside it.

They hold everything - beer glasses (without handles), beer bottles, water bottles, coke cans, big gulps, etc. I saw a couple of people complained they're too wide and unstable, but it is impossible to spill anything that's inside this cupholder because the sides are a good 4-5 inches tall, at least. I purposely tried to tip over a full beer bottle and can, and you can't do it. I suppose if the can was absolutely full to the top, you might be able to spill a few drops out, but the bottom of the cupholder is solid so the fluid couldn't go anywhere anyway.

For what I paid, fourteen washingtons, this thing is a bargain, and I don't say that about many products. If you don't drink beverages, it can also be used to hold a slide, capo, and other stuff.

Comments about Vater Drink Holder with Clamp:

First off, I just couldn't help but add "improves sound" to my review. After all, what musician doesn't sound better after a couple drinks? :-)

Seriously though, this drink holder is substantial. I agree witht he previous review that the holder probably would not survive in a bag of drum hardware. But I am a bass player and my plan is to clamp this on my music stand and have it live in my trunk with my stand. Its very sturdy, moreso than the product listing picture conveys. With sturdy come weight. If you are a drummer, you won't notice the difference, but if you are an instrumentalist trying to keep the weight of your gear as low as possible, this will add a little bulk an a couple of pounds to your total. For me, its worth the extra weight in order to never have to look for a place to put my drink again.

I'll add to this review after I take the drink holder on a few gigs if the holder has problems. But I don't expect you'll be hearing from me.

Lastly, as others have suggested, I tried it out in my office too. Makes a nice drink storage option for those of us with computer gear and clutzy hands.

Oh, one other thing. In the "bottom line" section, it says I would recommend the AutoSquad service to a friend. No, I have no idea what AutoSquad is. I would, however, highly recommend the Vater Drink Holder!
