A great preamp oveerall, makes your bass sound like a $2000 bass, maybe better
When I bitched about the low outpurt of the pickups on my Yamaha BBN5, everybody implored me to install the Aguilar preamp if I liked the tone of my bass. The results were more than impressive: way more highs for my Marcus slap stuff, way more lows, variable mid knob. So many possible variations.I was running my GK800 at about 7. The speakers in my vintage SWR cabinet were moving all over the place. That stopped immmediately after installing the preamp; plus, I can't put my volume knob over 4 now. It's just to solid and loud. Incredible. And all of this coming from a bottom line bass that you can get on eBay for $200. A little routing, a bone nut, and you'll have a bass that plays great, sounds great, and will get you compliments from every sound man and bass player who hears you. For the record I tried pasive Bartolini Jazz pickups. They sucked compared to the stock Yamahas. Less volume, choked sounding. I ended up selling them to my roommate.
My only complaint is the stacked knobs start getting little sloppy.
I think these are comptetive with other quality preamps.
