OVERVIEW

Essential for piezo-equipped guitars.

The Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box gives you an unplugged sound that's rich, loud and electrifying. This amazing little box will make your acoustic guitar sound come to life!

By their very nature, piezo pickups tend to be very bright, with somewhat reduced bass response and warmth. The ADI21 combines the features of an active DI (direct injection) box with Behringer's proprietary microphone/tube emulation. If you don't want to use the emulation feature, the ADI21 also functions as a superb active DI box. The Blend control allows you to mix the amount of modeled tone with your instrument's normal output. The resulting sound is more natural with smooth saturation.

Armed with an onboard 3-band EQ, with sweepable mids to keep feedback under control, the ADI21 effectively eliminates the harsh harmonics of piezo pickups. The output is laid out on 1/4" TS or balanced gold-plated XLR connectors, which can be used to send a low-impedance signal to the mixing console or straight to tape. You also get a ground lift switch to eliminate annoying ground loop hum problems. You can power this little lifesaver with a 9 V battery or our PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).

Putting some acoustic glory into your recordings or live performances has never been this easy-or sounded this incredible.

FEATURES
  • Blend control
  • 3-band EQ with sweepable mids
  • DI recording output
  • Authentic tube/microphone modeling
  • Super-high impedance

I have a Taylor T5 and a Taylor GA214CE. Both use an under saddle PU that sounds pretty good, but still has that "plinky" piezo sound, even when run through a dedicated acoustic guitar amp (Fender AcoustiSonic). The Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box gets both guitars much closer to sounding like I'm just micing the guitar. Works great with the acoustic amp, but even better, it works just as well directly into the board or a regular guitar amp (I have several; mostly use either Fender SuperSonic22 or Fender Blues Jr). The box is pretty straight forward, just plug in and twiddle the knobs until you get the sound as close to the real acoustic sound as you can. For me, this means dialing back the mids and playing with the treble and bass depending on what system you're running through. Uses either a 9v or wall wart, and has both 1/4 inch or xlr outputs, so it can go into just about any amp or board. I've played several gigs with it and am tempted to buy another for backup, more out of fear that they'll discontinue it than that I'll kill this one as it seems pretty solid. And considering it's about 10 percent the cost of the Taylor preamp, it's a steal.

Best feature by far is the softening of the piezo pickup. The tones are warm (almost tube like), but you will have to use an EQ if you want to truly blend the sound for a fuller, richer tone.

Mine didn't like the 9V wal-wart...smoked a bit, then I disconnected it. Mids are a bit punchy and there is a noted HISS (as is common with most DI units). I used a simple compressor to squash it. Overall, it does a pretty good job for the price. Nothing fancy, just does the job.

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

I purchased this about a year ago after i received my Breedlove acoustic from MF. The Breedlove sounds great but a little thin on volume plugged in to my amp. This ADI works great and gave me just what I needed, a good volume boost as well as more depth and fullness. Lately, I've been using it with my Ibanez acoustic. It has sliders, and a big full sound, plugged into my 50 watt Acoustic wedge bass amp. I've always thought regular amps for acoustics sound tinny to my ears. I was right! The Acoustic bass amp sounds perfect for electric-acoustic guitars. No effects, but I utilize a Zoom multistomp CDR for that and it works great. Anyway, long story short, this Behringer pedal is a steal at this price. I just could'nt bring myself to pay a large amount for similar products. I took a chance on this and it really paid off. I use it with a one spot power supply. Peace! Part timer out!

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

I bought this on the offhand chance that it would improve my acoustic sound. It's great! Nice volume boost and sound tweakability. I just couldn't bring myself to spend too much on an acoustic preamp pedal and gave the Behringer a shot. My Breedlove sounds a little thin without it, but I mainly use it with my Ibanez acoustic. It has sliders and I play through an Acoustic brand 50 watt acoustic bass amp I purchased from MF. It's the wedge and they seem to be out of them now. Works perfectly with an acoustic guitar! I've always thought most amps for acoustic guitars sound too tinny. Problem solved. Just thought I'd put my two cents worth in. I recommend the Behringer pedal. With it on or off the difference is night and day!

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

I bought this for little acoustic gigs. Seems to be ok for that. The controls aren't that responsive and don't expect this box to make your acoustic sound great. It's more like a direct box with some limited EQ'ing. That's the best I can describe it. It seems to have a metal chasis and the price is perfect for what I needed.

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

The comments read on the MF website about this box influenced my purchase. It was a good one. The product features-to-price ratio of the ADI21 is better than any other pedal I've purchased. For the price - it is a bargain. Low noise. It smooth's out the pluckiness of the under-saddle bridge transducer and offers a good range of filtering options.

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

I added this solid little unit to my acoustic guitar rig for use with a Taylor ES-go pickup. Whether playing through my amp or straight to the PA, this gives me handy control over volume and EQ. Nice and quiet operation. Nice heavy feel. Smooth controls. Great deal!

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

Nice pre-amp/direct box. It does everything that was advertised. When testing it, I moved it next to a wall wart and it picked up a lot of 60hz hum from the wal-wart. Granted, I put the top of the ADI21 close to the wall-wart. I wouldn't necessarily do that in real life. Taking the thing apart, I noticed it had a nice base plate made of sturdy and thick metal, but the purple plastic cover did not have any shielding. I took it apart and lined the box with copper foil. No more hum from anything. It is very quite now. While it was apart, I noticed the foot switch was held in place by two screws into plastic standoffs directly molded into the plastic case. Eventually, plastic dries out and looses strength. I expect this is where it will most likely fail 10 years from now. Nonetheless, for what I paid you can't go wrong with this box. Great for violin.

Great device with nice features. The sound can be nicely modified and shaped. The only thing with mine is that the power adapter started to smoke then caught on fire! Now there's a hot sound! I just use the battery now because I'm scared now.

Comments about Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box:

After playing around with the pedal for 30 minutes: It does produce a nice sound. BUT: It's dirty and/or quiet. Single notes are ok, but strum some chords and you get that horrible "I can't process that much sound" crackle. If you turn the volume and blend down it seems to get better, but then it's so quiet I need another darned preamp to boost the signal again. Disappointed because it really does sound nice besides that.
