    Bogner

Alchemist spins the visions of discerning guitarists into gold.

The Bogner Alchemist 112 combo amp is a modern take on vintage tube amp design. Boasting sparkling, articulate cleans, touch-sensitive leads and a bright and colorful crunch, the Alchemist 112 guitar amp owes its remarkable tonality to a 6L6 class-A/B power section, 5 - 12AX7 preamp tubes and a premium Celestion speaker. The Bogner Alchemist 112 amp owes its timeless appeal to classic innovation, modern ingenuity and some entrancing sonic alchemy.

The Bogner Alchemist 112 has a 2-channel design. Each channel has its own voice and identity. Beginning clean and fast, featuring an open top-end and tight bottom-end, Channel 1 opens gradually to present simmering blues tones that churn like spirits in a cauldron. Advancing toward saturation, Crunch mode turns up the heat adding the perfect touch of nastiness with added pick response and increased tonal complexity. Channel 2, achieving critical mass, invokes the famous white-hot Bogner gain—creamy, modern and screaming with sustain—offering everything from Brit rock right through to modern metal. Plus, with variable Bright settings, each channel can be customized to match the tone of your guitar and rig.

Featuring a selectable power section, from 40 to 20 watts, the Alchemist 112 amp's sonority quickly transforms to display a very different kind of magic. When switched to 20 watts, the Bogner Alchemist 112 amp undergoes a complete sonic metamorphosis, changing its harmonic complexity and feel to conjure the essence of the legendary Brown sound.

Reverb and Delay, in variable styles and levels, run in parallel, separate from the original signal. The result is a rich, living and breathing, fully realized resonance capable of producing a complete tonal landscape.

Bogner includes a 4-button footswitch with the Alchemist 112 combo tube amp.

    Features

    • 6L6 class-A/B power section and 5 - 12AX7 preamp tubes; selectable power section (40 or 20 watts)

There isn't an amp out there that sounds this great for the money. Yep, it's a bit more that some cheapo tube amps but this thing is a real Bogner. Don't be misled by players griping where this is made. Great Marshall amps are being assembled in China and India now. Same with Fenders, Vox, Blackheart and the like. Although a 2 channel amp, there's really 4 channels lurking inside the amp. Using the voicing switch (Clean/Crunch) on the Gold (Clean) channel, you can go from clear, pristine clean tones all the way to raging Tweed and Vox sounds. I can't get better Vox sounds out of a Vox. Put an OD or distortion pedal on this channel and you can get all the way to metal tones. The Mercury (OD) Channel goes from crunchy and even clean tones to smooth overdrive and metal tones. The amp is very sensitive and responsive to guitar volume and levels. Find a great distorted tone and turn your guitar volume knob down and the amp cleans up brilliantly. Dig in when soloing and the note blossum with harmonics. Both channels are also very responsive to your pedals. I have played thru some amps that don't respond well to certain OD or distortion pedals but I've yet to find anything that doesn't sound great thru this amp. I just wish Bogner would have added one more switch to the 4 button footswitch so you could toggle between those amp modes. If they did that, this would be an amazing 4 channel monster. I've played this amp a low volumes and it sounds great but a performance levels, it comes alive. The reverb and delays (made by Line 6) are excellent and throw your chorus and phaser into the parallel effects loop and you're set. On top of this, there's the 20 or 40 watt setting that really does something besides just turn down the volume. The 20 watt is a variac circuit that "browns" the sound out more. It's subtle but a cool change in the tone character designed by the guy (Reinhold Bogner) who helped design and mod EVH's brown sound amps. On top of all that, the components inside the amp are higher grade than what you are getting in the standard production line stuff. Everytime I head over to my local guitar shops to try out a new guitar, I plug into the Alchemist. I can go from clean to distorted in one amp and really hear what the particular guitar sounds like. You just can't beat that. When first released, these were pricier than they are now. Get one...it's a great deal for a great amp. (Oh, and for what it's worth...MF has the photos of the 1x12 and 2x12 Alchemists reversed. The 1x12 is more retangular, the 2x12 more squarish).

On paper, this thing should be an amazing amplifier. It's very well appointed, no doubt. But having been through 2 of these in less than a month, I think it's a safe bet that these have no longevity and can't really stand up to normal use. The first one I purchased sounded had more fuzz than an FM radio coming through the speaker. It sounded just HORRIBLE after only one use. The replacement amp had horrific tube-rattle. Not just rattle but super-sonic shimmying, like all of the spring reverb was about to come flying apart. You should know that you're basically buying a high-end Line 6 amp, and not a very well made one at that. I bagged it after 2 tries and went back to fender.

Comments about Bogner Alchemist Series 112 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp is great because it is so versatile and affordable. I bought the head version with a used 6505 4x12" cabinet and used that as my gig rig for a long time. It may be low wattage but it has plenty of power to play live shows, yet can also sound good at low volumes like when practicing. There is a seemingly unlimited number of sounds you can get between the two channels by tweaking various things. Only complaints I have really is that the thing is pretty darn heavy (but hey it's a tube amp) and the little rubber feet on the bottom fell off not long after buying it. Overall though this amp sounds great, will make basically any sound you want it to, can handle live gigs and at home practice sessions, and has a price tag that's really hard to beat.

Comments about Bogner Alchemist Series 112 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Using two of these with additional cabinets on each. Tone pure and simple. All about tone. These amps when miked have a sweet sound that only Bogner can produce. I am just talking about tone not volume although they can get pretty loud on the 20 watt side. With the addition of another twelve this amp gets very punchy. Better tone than the 2x12 model IMO. I only wish that they made a rack mount power amp,for more cabinets.

Awesome 6L6 California Tone, My first review on MF.

Comments about Bogner Alchemist Series 112 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Overall, this is the best guitar amp of the decade and my current favorite. I am thinking about buying a second one, that's how much I like this tone. My style of play requires a very responsive tube saturation where you can still hear every note through the distortion. I will never take this amp out of my home studio. Its too heavy to lug around, and tube amps are moody/sensitive enough. I have been seeing them on stages for the past year though. The Alchemist doesn't have a "line out" or a Master Volume. Weird, but acceptable. The standard effects loop seems to work as loops do. I also like that all the controls are on the front panel, so you can tilt it back against the wall and still access the controls.
I got the 40 watt 1x12 Bogner Alchemist about a month ago.

Outstanding features- 2 channels, with Gain, Volume, Bass, Mid, Treble, on each channel. Channel 1, Clean/Gold is spanking, Fenderish, but with more response unless you could get a real 70's Twin Reverb.. Flip the Crunch switch on channel 1 and you are in SRV territory. This isn't simulated, but real genuine response. Channel 2 or Mercury has the best overdrive I have heard on a mid-price amp, right up there with a Boogie. There is a variac switch for 20 and 40 watts, with standby in the center.

I love the EQs on this amp. Yes, it has a mid scoop switch on the Overdirve/Mercury to immediately get into Brown Sound, the saturation of Van Halen or Randy Rhodes. The Reverb and Delay are top notch, and I usually hate simulated effects. (All the pedals on my board are Analog bucket brigade.) Bogner and Line 6 hit a home run with 3 types of Reverb, and 3 Delays, capable of going over the top. The included footswitch gives you a channel toggle, boost, reverb, and delay. There are 3 more tweaker switches on each channel. The genuine Celestion Vintage 30 compliments the tube tone on the amp perfectly. You don't catch any of the "torn speakers fuzz" on the cleans like you might find on many Marshalls. If this was not superior I would have sent it back.
I read a lot of reviews about this amp and all were outstanding for the first 2 years. Recently a batch of defective models came off the assembly line. I hoped that it was a limited problem and finally decided to buy with MF's guarantee. It took more than a week to arrive, took it out of the box, plugged it in and nothing. Dead. All the lights were on, the tubes glowing, but no sound. Called MF, and ordered a replacement.

A week later I finally got a working amp, which mysteriously had a Line 6 QA sticker on it. The amp is built by Line 6 . It was designed by Reinhold Bogner who I have full faith in despite a defective batch off the assembly line. The build is very solid on this combo. It weighs almost 70 pounds. Compare that weight to other combo 12's.This baby is built like a tank, and that heavy cabinet will give you a much fuller sound when recording. I still give the Alchemist a 10 on quality because it does sound that good.
I had this item in my shopping cart for a year an nearly bought it several times at the suggested retail price. I didn't need another amp, but was still not getting exactly the sound I was looking for . Boy am I glad that I gave the Alchemist a chance. You have Five-12-AX7 tubes in the pre-amp, and 2 6L6s in the power section. I have never been able to get enough harmonic distortion out of EL-34 tubes without running an OD box. No problem here. I just crank the Drive up to 10, and back up the volume on the guitar to clean it up, like we did in the 70's and 80's. The Alchemist will definatly get you into Boogie Duel Recitifier territory for half the price.

    Review of Alchemist Series 112

Comments about Bogner Alchemist Series 112 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Love the sound, great price, alot of features. The little switches for punch, mid boost, and main boost, really give the amp character. being able to everything from rockablilly with the built in delay, overdriven blues, or heavy metal leads that cut through the mix really well.
Great sound for the money, alot of variation can be made with just small turn of a knob.
no problems yet, seems to be built sturdy.
got it for 475, with free shipping. Awesome bargin.

    Happy Alchemist customer!

    By The Truth

Comments about Bogner Alchemist Series 112 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I think this is a very good amp and to be honest I had been a fender and pedal man for at least the last 15 years but this amp made me look at things a little different. Don,t get me wrong I still love my fenders but this amp will bring out more versatality without sounding to metal. It,s hard to actually admit this but this my new favorite amp. I have played for about 25 years and many amps but never more for my money than this nor any better tone. This is my first time actually taking the time to rate a product but this one impressed me.
For the price that I got this boutique amp at I couldn,t ask for many more features. This amp is listed as a two chanel amp but it,s actually four chanels with 3 reverbs and 3 delay types and it doesn,t sound digital. This amp is so versatile that I honestly don,t feel the need to run a processor with different amp simulations. You can get fat, dark, bright, sparkly but not quite as clean as the fender bell tones but very good with its own jingly personality somewhere between fender and vox. And oh yea a 4 button footswitch. Ok I would have given it a ten on this one but come on.... NO line out.
I really can,t give an answer on quaulity yet because I have only had it for three weeks. I ordered a second one and had to send it back because it kept squealing but i think they sent me a return on mistake. But i did reorder
Extra ordinary value. If this was U.S. made it probably wouldn,t be to affordable sad to say.

    Bogner Alchemst extremely under rated!

Comments about Bogner Alchemist Series 112 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Overall, as I said so far so good. I probably would recommend changing the tubes to EH brand once there ready to be replaced other than that it's too soon to tell if any problems will arise.
FYI, i also purchased the head as a backup for $434.00 level 1 used.
    How can you beat that!
I've been playing since the mid 70's I've used brands like Ampeg, Sound City, Fender and many others. As I've gotten older I tended to go after USA made amps and you know they can be quite expensive but then Bogner came out with the Alchemist. At first they were also expensive until recently I saw that they had come down in price substantially. I decided to purchase the 1x12 combo.
Out of the box it looks expensve but once I turned it around I can see it was "Made in China" well, ok let's give it a shot and see what it has to offer.
The clean channel gives you many switching options including gain. The lead channel gives you more switching options to give you that Classic Rock sound or VH, or ACDC sound.
After some tweaking I was amazed of how well this thing purrs. The delay on the second channel is nothing short of amazing. The footswitch is identical to some of those very expensive USA made amps and with the Celestion V30 you can't go wrong.
I was playing a Fryette Sig X w/deliverance cab prior to purchasing this combo which I thought was the best sounding amp ever until I started playing the Bogner Alchemist. I sold the Fryette and now the Bog is my amp of choice.
Quality looks good, made well no issues, Time will tell
Incredible value! These were going for $800-$1000 when they first came out.
I paid $450.00 brand new from MF

    Amazing For Several Reasons!

    By Joseph De Sena

    from Staten Island, NY

Comments about Bogner Alchemist Series 112 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Funny story about the delivery of my amp that speaks volumes (no pun intended!) about both the build quality of this Bogner tank and the quality of the packing/shipping: since my amp was shipped to me via truck freight, I had to pick it up curbside from the delivery agent. After excitedly signing for my new amp, I tried to macho it out and hurriedly threw the box up on my shoulder and started on my way up the driveway. Halfway up, and to my horror, THE BOX SLID BACKWARDS OFF MY SHOULDER AND WENT CRASHING TO THE GROUND (absolutely true)-about a SIX-FOOT DROP! I turned just in time to see it fall onto one of its corners and then settle onto the driveway. For the first five seconds, all I could do was stare, speechless, as the delivery guy approached me and asked if I was OK. After uttering a loud expletive (I have wonderfully understanding neighbors), I opened the box, and, through streaming perspiration, I slowly slid my hand down all sides of the amp all the way to the bottom. Feeling nothing out of the ordinary, and at the suggestion of the delivery guy (who apparently was the only one of us still in control of his faculties), I pulled the amp up by its handle and out of the box, trembling the whole time. After a quick inspection showed nothing out of the ordinary, and, upon hearing/seeing no rattling shards of broken tube glass, I thanked the driver and carried the amp into my house and put it face down on my kitchen table. Not only was nothing broken, cracked, loosened, or put out of place, but NOT A SINGLE VACUUM TUBE WAS DISLODGED FROM ITS SOCKET. Still sweating, I plugged the amp in and plugged in a guitar. The amp worked PERFECTLY on both channels and with every combination of effect and EQ setting tweaked and re-tweaked. That sweet Bogner tone filled my house! I cannot say enough about the superb quality of this amp and the way it was shipped to me, especially after having lived through what could have easily been an absolute catastrophe. I could not be happier!
A two-channel, 40-20 watt, all-tube, Celestion Vintage 30-packing, on-board effects Bogner combo for the sale price I got it for? 'Nuff said!
    See below.
Outstanding value! Musician's Friend should run this same sale again! I have a few guitarist friends who are chomping at the bit for the same sale price I got!

    Performs as expected

Comments about Bogner Alchemist Series 112 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Good amp for the money. I had originally purchased a B Stock amp but when it was received only one channel worked. Contacted the seller and it was exchanged for a brand new model. Once received I found out this thing really roars. Tones can mix beautifully from being incredibly clean to a massive sounding overdrive. I had to replace a tube in it after about 6 months (low end chinese thing) and due to an outdoor gig with rain I had to take it back into the repair shop with a messed up circuit board (out of warranty period anyway). But now I have had it back for a year and zero issues (two years total). I really enjoy playing it, it has a much better sound than my buddies fender reissue. Clean sounds just as good and overdrive channel is hands down better. I would buy again at the price that I got it. If I had to pay full price I may look toward a Mesa.
