Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

My name is William Taylor Prichard author of "Open Tunings for Jazz Guitar Improvisation"
First off , I've owned every guitar synth ever made by Roland... and have had a love hate relationship with everyone. They are all great tools in the studio...and for the most part I haven't needed to hire keyboard players for years. However, they are all quirky...and almost every patch must be "coddled" by applying technique that it can handle before you can record a "non glitch " pass with it.
Personally, the tracking has been very manageable for the last 6 generations...its not latency thats a problem,
it's the "after touch"... releasing a note without a little "pig squeal" or "chirp" of a note that you didn't play.
Also...with the exception of the old Gr-300 and Gr-700..all the recent models since the late 80's have been
"sample players"...not real synthesizers with real "oscillators".
All that has changed! no triggered samples ,no hex pickup, ZERO latency and ZERO aftertouch issues.
This puppy takes your favorite guitar, just the way it is with a regular cable to input...and juices it through 3
oscillators! Each one has its own menu of all the boss effects to apply individually...and a master effect menu that can be applied to all 3 on the main outs!
In a lot of ways, its closer to playing thru your favorite overdrive or efx pedal. plug in and start twisting knobs
in real time and hear the difference! Now , keep in mind that oscillators are very complex critters.
Think of the principles behind a complex high end studio compressor... there's a lot of knobs and they all effect one another and interact. It takes a little time to understand the whole concept, but once you do it can produce dramatic results! So to with the SY-300. its got a lot of great presets, and thats always the best place to start tweaking. the manual is clear and concise. and you don't even have to open it, before you plug in and start having fun! bottom line ... IT ROCKS

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

I am a fan of the Roland GR-55, and had resigned my self to using one guitar with the GK-3 pickup. Making sure I nor my band mates trod on the 13-pin cable was quite exhausting. I saw the literature on the SY-300 and thought, "No way could this track with out modifications." WRONG!!!! Right out the box, this baby wailed. So far I've only used the presets and pre-loaded user patches. They have been more than enough to wow audiences and some of my band mates (the Keyboard Player has not given a blessing, lmbo). Not having experience programming a true synthesizer, I can't say whether or not this pedal is lacking. But for now, it kicks a..!

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

Only have used it for 1 week and i'm a little intimidated about creating my own patches. The presets seem heavy on distorted metal sounds that I will rarely use. The ones that I plan to use are fantastic. I see great potential with this guitar synth for me, as discover more. The number of preset patches that i'm becoming comfortable with is growing daily. There is a lot of variance in the power or volume of these different presets but the unit has incredible power and can easily be increased or decreased.

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

I've been using Roland guitar synths for a few generations since the GR-1 and I now own a GR-55 which I really like, especially the V section, and I've been given the opportunity to test this new synth for Roland Canada. I must say I love the freedom of just one guitar cable! And the tracking is immediate and tight - it follows your every feel, bend, attack, harmonics even and the sound changes between pickups too. I've owned Moogs so this synth is super easy to program especially when using the Boss Tone Studio, but it has all the added effects that a guitarist is used to and many ways of chaining it all together. I'm new at this one but already it feels like an old friend! I will definitely buy it off Roland when the tryout period expires.

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

Great Guitar synthesizer. Fabulous sound, particularly, the Organ based effects and the GR300 style lead tones. I use it in parallel with a Roland GR-55 and a BOSS GP-10 from the "Guitar Out" Jack of the GR-55. A product which is a long time coming. This pedal has ZERO latency and it's chief attraction is that it can be played with a real organic feel. You really can use your own guitar technique and it responds to everything-picking, harmonics, the works! Many of the presets are of no use to me, but no matter has I like to edit my own sounds. The editing is quite versatile and relatively easy. A little noisy on some patches but, overall, a great addition to my effects arsenal.

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

I have it on a sliding rack in my studio- and I use the Line out on Helix , or just straight in from the guitar to feed the SY-300 input. There IS an editor and a nice one you can download from Boss for this, and once you start playing and learning (its not that hard) with that, this is when the SY300 starts to really SHINE bright tone wise. The factory settings are ok, but are mainly designed to "show-off" what the SY-300 can do. It has Main outs (I use the mono side for return back to Helix) and "Sub-Outs" (I use these for inputs to my Apollo interface), and its very well ported for many other hookups. And, the important thing is there is 0 latency while playing- ZERO!!!

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

this is a nice Guitar Synth with good response and a good array of sounds. Nice ability to tweak any sound into what you need. The one down side is more with the documentation in the manual and the synth description information that is provided on the Roland site and commercial re-sellers. If you read the given info on this page, no where does it mention that the SY-300 DOES NOT transmit MIDI note data. No where in the instruction manual does it mention that the SY-300 DOES NOT transit MIDI note data. If you look up the info page on the Roland site, it mentions all the positive aspects of the SY-300, but does not mention that it does not transmit MIDI note data.

I ordered one from MF. Discovered quickly it does not transmit MIDI note data. Finally I googled an inquiry and found an Roland 'How To' page and in that documentation it does state that the SY-300 does not transmit MIDI note data. Oh well. Spent a good meal out with my wife on return shipping!

So, if you need everything but MIDI note data, this is good! If you are looking for transmission of MIDI note data into another synth or a DAW, this product will not do that. My mistake, for sure. But I wish the info data on the seller's write up, or the info in the instruction manual, or the basic info on the Roland site would have clearly said this.

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

Oops... Almost gave this a negative review: Watch out, the thing comes with headphones/console optimized output as factory default. So if you hook this up to an amp, first go to the System settings and change them. This makes a very big difference (from "what the.." to "wow!").
Also note that this is an analog type synth sound: Pat Metheney, John McLaughlin (80's Mahavishnu), etc. So, if you're looking for something like that, this is gold. If you're looking for real Steinway sampled sounds, etc. go for the ones with the MIDI pickup. You won't get Scott Henderson's flute-type sounds exactly (those are digital), but you will get sounds which are at least equally great (but analog). As far as John McLaughlin-type sounds, you'll be jamming all day long on this thing. The complement software (not required, but handy) works as advertised so far on a MacBook Air.

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

I use this in an effects loop on the Line 6 Helix. I use it both blended with my natural electric guitar tone and as a standalone sound, depending on what I'm playing. I also use it as an extra overdrive pedal without the synths, particularly because I love Boss's Blues Driver but don't own one, and this has a good model of it. I perform with it at Sunday church services and I mainly use the synths for pads or to simulate an organ, strings, or bass. It comes in useful for hymns where electric guitar doesn't really fit. (At least not the way I play; I'm not about to start in on cheesy '80s corporate-pop chord vamping.)
Regarding its overdrive models, it also has several fuzz models that I find more useable than the Helix fuzz models. I'm not really a fan of fuzz in the first place, and the Helix models seem too over the top. This has a '60s fuzz I like that is quite mellow. It also has a treble boost and a mid boost, which I like to use.
Other non-synth effects it carries are compressors, reverbs, delays, choruses, phasers, flangers, slicers (like a gated tremolo to use with the synth sequencers), and some I don't really use and can't think of right now. I feel the effects models on the Helix are generally better, but the SY-300's are still quite good, especially the overdrives. It does have a few unique effects, like the slow gear and bit crusher models.
The best thing about it, for my purposes, is how mindbendingly fun it is to play around with. It's almost a problem because of how long I can sit with it and tweak the synths, adjust the filters, move effect patches around the signal chain, ad infinitem.
I would give a more detailed review of the synth itself, but I'm such a novice at synth, I couldn't reliably say whether it was good or bad, and I also know I'm not scratching the surface of what it could do if I understood all the parameters. I can still get great sounds and a lot of fun out of it, but there are still many parameters I haven't explored.

Comments about Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer:

I love the fullness that it adds to my sound. I love the ambience it adds to my acoustic guitar. I can not use all the samples it contains but Tone Central has bunches of usable configurations to download. A lot of the tonalities are special effects phrases that you can use to add to recordings.
I run some of the calmer effects under my guitar to fatten up its tone. You know something is there but it is not overwhelming. I have had the earlier synth version pedals and they also contained the spatial sounds of a keyboard. Those are not necessarily useful for live performances. This pedal has more practical sounds to edit and gain controls of. The ambient sounds worked well for electric guitars too. Being old school I want my tone on top and not be smothered by effects. Used tastefully this pedal works live and in the studio.
