It is by far the best mini amp I have heard or played out of. It is what it is (a mini amp not quite 6 inches wide and not quite 5 inches tall) so it is not going to sound just like your favorite tube amp. It does sound very, very good for what it is. The non adjustable (except for on/off) echo effect sounds slightly reverb, slightly delay, and slightly slap-back all in one. The adjustable tremolo is great and using it does not effect the volume like on most amps. The gain is fine and offers a variety of distortion. The frequency response of the speakers is good and very good using the low notes on the A and E strings. It sounds unique and you find yourself making things up on it that you would not come up with otherwise. It actually is a functionally fun to play mini amp.

Having owned several Dan-O products, I thought this micro amp would do the absolute minimum of delivering sound at a usable level for rehearsing with unamplified vocals. So I bought this amp and the the DH2, which is a simplified version (without reverb and tremolo). It turns out the level the amp delivers is just a tad above the acoustic level delivered by a strummed Strat. When I saw the pictures in the ads, I thought the amp was somewhat larger, but it's really too small - although very cute - in fact, it just does collapse under the weight of the jack!

if youre deployed

Comments about Danelectro Hodad DH-1 Mini Amp:

When I was looking for a small amp to use while deployed I looked at the Fender,Vox,Marshall, little smokey. I found for the price the Dano Hodad kicked their ass with options. It reminds me of my twin reverb. It has an echo effect that really sounds good and the vibrato is so cool and adjustable. they can be used together too! The Sound quality is really unbelievable especially with headphones on. The over drive makes amp sound like a big one and can really crunchy and full sounding. the power supply isnt expensive if youd rather use it than the batteries but I've been getting around 3 weeks out the the 9volt especially when i use the headphone. My friends deployed with me think the amp is so cool they even took pictures with it.I recommend it especially for those who travel. it takes almost no space, keeps you quiet and really jams...any questions email ricklaptop@yahoo.com

Great Harp Amp!

Comments about Danelectro Hodad DH-1 Mini Amp:

I bought this to play blues harp through and it sounds great. The "reverb" (slap back) and "tremelo" effects are excellent and unheard of at this price. This amp is plenty loud enough to play harps with while jamming with a band. I miked it through a PA system and got a huge cool sound. I've also plugged my Telecaster and acoustic electric guitar through it for a nice jamming or low volume band practice sound. A great value for $49!

I bought this amp just out of curosity. Plus I had a 25.00 credit.
I glad I did. I am currently on lock down in a one bedroom apartment in NOME ALASKA. It was sunny out yesterday and it was minus 50 below zero. Long story short I dont go out much.
This amp sounds much bigger than it is. I wish they made a 20 watt model, I would buy it.Perfect for a road trip.
If you want to have a 60s FLASH BACK buy this amp. You can get your groove on anywhere.
KEEP ON JAMMIN.

Comments about Danelectro Hodad DH-1 Mini Amp:

Since my last review I have been playing my Gibson Dobro Lectric through this little jewel... It has both a P90 and cone mounted Fishman acoustic pickups on it and I was very pleased at the quality of the sound using one or the other or both.. Playing with the volume knob at full tilt and a small amount of gain using the acoustic pickup produces an amazingly clean acoustic sound but not very loud. Turning up the gain and adjusting 50 50 between the 2 pickups is a nice mix of clean overdrive and full tilt gain and the P90 and I get great sustain which is a lot of fun for me since I only play slide.

Inconsistent reverb effect. Very nice otherwise

Comments about Danelectro Hodad DH-1 Mini Amp:

I have yet to use a guitar with this enjoyable toy because I bought it to play harp with... I like everything but I could live without the reverb and the echo features though I can get a decent slap back effect with the echo setting and with the tone set on the low side I can tame the reverb down a bit... The overdrive available by turning up the gain knob is great and using less of it results in a clean sound that is great for playing straight harp accompanying acoustic guitars and vocals....A reverb adjustment screw like the echo has would make this a much better value for anyone that uses reverb.. Overall I have to admit that it has gotten used a lot in the week or so that I have had it and I am very glad to own it.

Hodad vs Honeytone

By J. Prins

About Me Novice

Pros

  • Easy To Use
  • Good Warmth
  • Portable

Cons

Comments about Danelectro Hodad DH-1 Mini Amp:

This tiny amp sounds great for the size. I only dinged it one star because, compared with the Danelectro Honeytone, it seems a little overpriced. The latter is only twenty on MF, while the Hodad is fifty. They are roughly the same size and can use the same AC adaptor (not included, recommended). Both use a 9v battery, and the Hodad will burn though it faster.

There's no question that the Hodad has a better, richer sound. Its has two speakers vs. one for the Honeytone, and the difference in sound quality is apparent side-by-side. But.. it doesn't sound 2.5 times as good. There're also the extra effects, echo and tremolo, which are nice and work well enough, but they're not a huge deal for me.

Both have tone, gain, and a headphone jack.

Recommended for portable or quieter practicing. If you want the best bang for your buck and just need to hear yourself play, get the Honeytone. If fifty isn't too rich for you, the Hodad will deliver a greater quality and variety of sound.

Slightly bigger and louder than I expected. Nice gain but not a metal amp. Stuck a tube screamer in front of it and rocked just fine (keeping the pedal level at 4 or below). Love the echo, has a large room reverb sound. Tends to fall over as the jack is on the top. Need to move the jack location and include a power supply but other than that it's great for travel or sitting around.

For the price, you can't beat this little amp! I bought this for camping in the summer. out of the box I played my Stratacoustic through it and was really impressed with the sound you can get out of this little 9V powered amp! The tremolo setting out of the box is really choppy so you will want to adjust it, the echo effect is pretty good. I only wish there was a good way to attach a shoulder strap or belt clip to this.

Totally cool. Of course it is not that loud, it isn't mean to be. You can play blues licks and have lots of fun with this at low volume levels. Much better than other Danelctro mini amps because of the echo and tremolo. They really work. Also louder and clear than other Danelctro minis. Of course, it has that fantastic Danelctro retro chic. Just what I wanted, just what I got, couldn't be happier.

I have to admit, I bought this with the intent to use it for a blues harp amp. I read a couple of other reviews that said it was decent for Harp. I like to tinker, so I thought I could upgrade the speakers and perhaps have a decent Harp amp. But alas, I did not get the sound I was looking for with my green bullet mic. Even with my upgraded speaker, it still sounded rather like a toy. The good news is that it does indeed sound pretty good with an electric guitar (as it is actually advertised).
So I'll keep mine for a small, but cool sounding practice amp for my electric guitar.

I like Danelectro products primarily because of their retro-kitsch appeal. A strong plus is that their products generally under-promise and over-deliver. The Hodad DH-1 sounds good for a "mini" amp as long as your expectations are reasonable. It works great for quiet practicing without irritating the neighbors or disturbing your dog.

Comments about Danelectro Hodad DH-1 Mini Amp:

Having owned several Dan-O products, I thought this micro amp would do the absolute minimum of delivering sound at a usable level for rehearsing with unamplified vocals. So I bought this amp and the the DH2, which is a simplified version (without reverb and tremolo). It turns out the level the amp delivers is just a tad above the acoustic level delivered by a strummed Strat. When I saw the pictures in the ads, I thought the amp was somewhat larger, but it's really too small - although very cute - in fact, it just does collapse under the weight of the jack!
