I noticed some of these reviews on here don't speak very highly of this pedal but I've been playing for 36 years and this is my 3rd one and I love it! My other 2 still work but the wires running to the battery connector broke after years of repacing old batteries and instead of relying on an old unit with resoldered wires, I just purchased a new one. They're not that expensive and I prefer to use batteries than an adapter. As for hum? Yes, there is some hum in the background but you don't hear it when you're playing. Just turn the thing off in between songs! How hard is that? Now, I will say that I never use this pedal by itself. I run my guitar into a crybaby first, then to this pedal. You don't have to keep your foot on the crybaby, just have it turned on. That gives it that bite! Or you could probably get a similar tone by using a treble booster instead of a crybaby. A crybaby (or a treble booster) gives it a more distinctive tone because this pedal by itself is a little muddy. As for durability? Well, starting on my 3rd one in over 30 years of almost daily playing time, I'd say it's held up very well! Just don't go playing frisbee with it! So to summarize, if it quits working after 10 or 15 years, I go get another one. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

I used to own an original 70's BM Pi...it was ok. Now this baby is nothing like it, except in the looks dept.
With single coils, i was hoping that I could get a lot meatier sustain and more clarity....not that I'm missing much of that right now, but more is always nice. Instead, what do i get....nothing but a big mess!! The sustain is super artificial and sounds horrible, the tone control basically does nothing ( the tone with the darn thing on is horrid!) and the amplifier control just adds more noise....
This one's a loser and going out then door.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

A noisey pedal, but very responsive, great sound. A one trick pony if what you're looking for is a pretty focused fuzzy sound, only really gets that right at one specific setting, but if you want to screw around with it more it actually does a lot of stuff. Very soulful pedal, integral part of my sound, hasn't failed me yet, and if it did I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Good day to all! Engaging this device produces a great deal of hum which is exacerbated when driven by single coil pickups and powered in tandem with 60 cycle lighting. As for the "sustain" function. Both words "sustain and function" are anathema in relation to what these produce. Instead of sustain; harsh fuzz-tone which readily breaks up is delivered in ever increasing increments as the sustain function is increased. The only sound that does not break-up with this action is the hum which becomes loud enough to drown out subtle rifs. The tone function is very either or in is response. Either you have a very thick drowning in mud tone or ear-drum splitting piezoic highs. At this moment I am looking at my 1967 all steel constructed same device. The internal electronics have 4 times the components of the new device in question, and is 1/3 smaller. There is NO sound equality between my 67 device and a new one. Mine delivers clear, sweet, translucent, distinctive harmonics with near endless singing sustain of full chords and single notes which do not break up but transform into rich feed-back. Sad to say that the emphasis on the vast majority of today's faster cheaper electronics in pretty packaging are but pale phantoms and specters of yester-years excellence.

      Best fuzz out there

      from Skeet

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Overall im very happy with this... it was the first pedal I bought an is my most used. A good bass fuzz and guitar fuzz in one.. a reason its been in continuous use for 40 + years. I do wish that it had more clarity. Overall good job EHX. You've don't it again.
It has enough volume to use it almost as a stand alone boost, useful with a dirty amp. Megatons of fuzz and sustain, useful for solos with sustain cranked, good rhythm tones when its backed off. The tone knob is where it sold me... it can, like in the discription, go from warm bass to crisp treble, which makes it a good candidate for a bass fuzz. Perfect for tones like Chris from Muse. Or if you are a Felix Pappalardi fan, turn the tone to half and sustain cranked. This can get good Jack Bruce tone from the 1968 Cream farewell concert. With a wah wah you get a perfect Cliff Burton tone.
I gave it an 8 because the paint will chip easy... be carefull. Other than that its fine, stronger than it Looks.
For what it costs its a steal.... I have 2 of these and love them to death. If you are not happy then there are hundreds of mods out there there to "fix" it. I have played pedals that cost twice as much, yet sound cheap.

The value is incredible, considering the quality. I don't think there is a better fuzz out there for this price.
It's fantastic for what you get. You don't need any more nobs than they give you, trust me!
The guy at the store said it is a little bit delicate, but i've stomped the hell out of this thing and it still looks like its new.
A classic fuzz pedal for under $100 bucks. if you are on the fence about getting this for some reason, get off the fence!

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

      I freaking love this thing.
I don't know how anybody gets by without owning a Big Muff. I don't care what you play, you need this pedal. The Fuzz Face is a great pedal, and all the boutique pedals are fun to tweak and look at, but the Big Muff makes me happy when I step on it. Lead, rhythm, noise, guitar, bass, keys, it just always works.
Had mine for 10 years and it still works and sounds perfect.
Save your money and skip the boutique boxes. You're not going to get anything out of those that you can't get froma a good ol' Big Muff.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I been playing for about 30 years, and this thing has no sustain and minor sound qualities. I am greatly disappointed in this purchase, but I like the case so I'll take out the board that's in it and build my own. I bought this because I was looking for some clean sustain, but this paper weight has none what so ever, and the muffling effect just sounds like an annoying grind , at either Hi-Mid-Lo anywhere, and the tone is just a mid range frequency adjuster from about 300 Hz to 900 Hz. Over all this thing is only worth less than a forth of what they are selling it for. I also bought a cheap distortion pedal which sounds 10 times better than this thing. I would advise everybody not to buy this unless you are looking to pay more for less, or less is your thing.

I'm a working Pro...Bar circuit in Canada...for years played BOSS pedals...great sound and DURABLE...nothing against them...highly recommended...Given a PI as a gift! Plugged in and turned on! A 70's growl, punk, hair metal... eliminated a couple of the BOSS...Put it on the pedal board and it was BIG...great impressive look...the sound is great...a little fidley on the knobs...changing settings needs a piece of masking tape marked (Tip) (Duh...) So far so good on durability...A "Stomp pedal" doesn't mean pound on it...If you are a moron who wants to be "the Show"...go ahead and crush it... guaranteed to break in 10 shows...Treat her like a lady...a great live pedal...BOSS is back up rig...now if I could only find a Roadie...

The only fuzz pedal you'll ever need....

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

There's a reason that this pedal is a classic. True, it only does fuzz, fuzzier, and fuzziest, but it's a lot of fun to play around with. Takes me back to when I was 9 years old and first discovered the distortion switch on my amp!
Having already tried out the Little Big Muff, which I also love, I was curious to see what the original sounded like. Holy cow, is this thing awesome. Nice, thick wooly fuzz and raspy, ear-splitting fizz, it's all there. The Little Big Muff is a nice alternative, and truthfully, there's not a huge difference in sound from this one, but I still like this one better.
So far, so good, but I think this where the Little Big Muff comes out on top. The folded aluminum construction makes this pedal feel a bit fragile, as does the footswitch, so you might want to take some extra precautions when transporting it to gigs. You could throw the Little Big Muff across the room, and I think it could take it.
Great price, especially for a reissue, US-made pedal. Check out the "boutique" fuzz pedals....they're $$$. If it breaks, oh well....just buy another one.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is not for everyone. Almost no one uses it for a primary distortion. It is NOT versatile. It is noisy, messy and sludgy. It is NOT subtle, and you cannot play technically with this pedal. You cannot play metal with it. It has no "chunk." It is not a smooth overdrive.BUTIt delivers exactly what one should expect. Fuzz for days - nasty, dirty fuzz. This pedal has pretty much one grungy sound, but you can;t get it anywhere else.Try it before you buy it. You will either hate it or love it.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Best distortion pedal ever. I've used it for guitar for years. However, I started playing bass in a band and figured I would use this other than the Bass Big Muff, only because it's cheaper and more abundantly accessible via music stores. I've blown 2 of them with bass, so I highly recommend not using this if you are using it for bass, use the Bass Big Muff.
      So easy to use.
      Built like a tank.
Pedals that cost more still cant get the fuzz that this thing puts out.

Definately one of the better pedals out there. And yes, it is a very good Hendrix pedal. I can get an amazing Jimi sound by combining this to a vox V847 and a Marshall 2266c, as you can imagine. Another thing, this is pretty sweet when used with any kind of reverb, and, come to think of it, with most guitar amps. Very Fuzz-alicious, pretty awesomely distorted, and it is sure to amaze your spectators.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was wanting to get a fuzz pedal for a 60's/70's kind of tone. The first thing I tried was the fuzz face, but returned it and got the big muff instead. I am glad that I did, because the big muff has a few important features that the fuzz face dosn't. For one thing you have the option of powering with a supply verses batteries which are so unreliable, (the fuzz face can only be powered by batteries) And the big muff has a LED light which the fuzz face lacks. I am not trying to bash the fuzz face, because it is also a great sounding pedal, but the big muff just has more features that make it a better, more reliable fuzz pedal. Pick one up!

This is a great pedal. It gives me that 60's/70's old school hard rock sound (for example: Cream, Led Zepplin, Hendrix, Black Sabath, ect), the sound I've been longing for. I personally dont like to call The Big Muff Pi a distortion pedal but i rather refer to it a fuzz pedal. Very thick in tone and very chrunchy distorion. One more thing this pedal DOES NOT use a 9volt adapter.

        Huge MUFF!!!

        By CaseyWuzHeere

        from Williston FL

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I had no idea that three nobs could do so much. This pedal is perfect for any genre,(at least in my opinion anyways.) I expected the tone knob to simply effect the Bass-Treble frequency, as do most single knob tone EQ's, but the Big MUFF dielivers an unparalled command of the Mid-range frequency. The tone knob will render any thing from seething metal, to the fattest blues tones. The Sustain knob is by far my favorite part of the pedal. No other pedal delivers the same tearing, cumbersome, tone that the Big MUFF brings to the speakers. The first quarter of the knob takes you from dirt to mud, and from there it only seems to increase the sustain and feedback(which I happen to be fond of.) This pedal is good for rhythm and leads desptie what others may say, the only problem, for me, is that a good lead tone isn't necessarily the best for rhythm(and vice versa.) I plan on buying a second, one for each application. Only cons; the paint chips TOO easily, and it is not a very dense pedal, it feels really hollow(this is coming from one who is really only familliar with BOSS and a TS-9) Kudos Electro-Harmonix!
