A believer in bringing great tools to starving musicians, Mike tasked his trusty team to create an affordable alternative, and that is how the Soul Food was cooked up.

The Soul Food delivers transparent overdrive with great touch and response. Its circuitry features boosted power rails to provide abundant headroom and increased definition. Best of all, you don't have to be a rock star to own one!

Just got it today and you can Believe the hype. This is the best sounding distortion pedal I've ever used. I will add this caveat, I don't use many effects and never have. Until now the Maxxon OD9 was my favorite. I have, so far, used it on a 50 Watt JMP Mk 2 Master Model and I can only describe the sound as halfway between dimed JMP and the best sounding overdriven Orange amps. Its uncompressed with a fat midrange boost and a smooth, juicy saturated grind. The treble knob is actually useable across its whole taper. It made the neck pickup on my VOS Les Paul sound great at full on saturation levels. I tried it on a Fender 6G3 Brown Deluxe Clone - this is what I always hoped that amp could sound like "Brown" is the word. EHX products are high quality and made the USA. Do I recommend this pedal ? I will use up my next 5 recommnedations on this pedal

This pedal blew away all my other overdrive/distortion pedals really quickly. It found its way on my pedalboard in a few minutes. However, it "broke" down after 3 months of playing. The "ON" signal works, it's when I want it "OFF" it kills the signal... I contacted EHX, their customer and repair services are really not impressive - in which they asked me to mail the pedal to Europe to have it fixed at my expenses... for a low value pedal? no thanks, I'll simply buy elsewhere. I really enjoyed those 3 months, but the lack of quality built and customer service turned me down to EHX products. If EHX wakes up and build their pedals stronger, I will recommend the Soul Food... Until then, I suggest you to spend your money elsewhere

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal as soon as it showed up on Musicians Friend, I have built and played many Klon Centaur pedals and thought for the price how could I go wrong to try one more. I am not disappointed.

This pedal has all the rich character of the Klon, while maybe it's a little more stiff so far as the responsiveness and feel goes it still trumps most pedals that are triple the cost. The buffer is a welcome addition and sounds as it should. It's a little darker than a klon and may have a little less of a bass bump BUT I can forgive it because it's been tweaked.

If you need a boost/low-medium gain overdrive forget many of those well known classics that have poor buffers that suck your tone and buy a Soul Food. It'll give you the right amount of rich low end, and high end sparkle to take any amp (especially one on the verge of breakup) to the next level.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I gig 50-75 dates a year in the S.F. Bay Area doing Corporate Events, Wineries, Weddings and Private Clubs. The clients that hire us expect us to look and sound professional. As a result, I have to be picky about my guitar rig and tone. The "Soul Food" is a breath of Fresh Air in the Stomp Box world in my opinion, as it covers 95% of the pedal it is modeled after, and is a spectacular value.

Just set your amp just at the verge of Break-up, and use the Soul Food as a Lead Boost, (for a single channel amp), or use it in the front of your Signal Chain as a Buffer. Or, on a 2-Channel Amp, use it as Lead Boost/Tone Shaping tool. I've owned an original Klon since buying one new from the builder about 5 years ago, but because of the outrageous increase of value, it's not a pedal that leaves my Home Studio. With the Soul Food, I now have one of my most coveted pedals and Tone Shaping tools back on my board.

Im so very impressed with this pedal. all the other OD pedals ive used seemed to color the tone so much that it was obvious to me i was using a pedal, not with this pedal. the switch inside for true bypass/Buffer is amazing it actually makes my guitar sound less harsh a lot more warm and responsive when the pedal is off and set to buffer. when on its the perfect OD tone and pushes my amp so very nicely.if your thinking about buying one but not sure if its worth it , i have to say go for it you will love it. its a must have for my rig from now on.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Very nice sounding overdrive. I find it works much better pushing pedals than others I've tried. For example, it drives my Wampler Plexi Drive perfectly, adding crunch and tightness without any harshness or raising the floor noise.

On its own it helps to add meat to single notes and has a -lot- of clean boost. Playing with the drive knob it adds a somewhat dumble-esque sounding overdrive for soloing.

It's fairly well built, looks nice and has the power plug on top which helps a lot with cable layout on pedalboards.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Great Pedal. I had never heard of Klon before seeing this, but I was in the market for a clean boost with an option for low gain.

I'm playing with an ESP Viper through a Peavey 6505+. I keep the Volume and Gain at 11:00 and the Treble at Noon. This gives my sound a decent volume boost and a touch of hair on the clean channel. My picking dynamics can control the amount of drive I get out of the pedal, also.

On the lead channel this lets me keep the pre-amp gain a little lower for rhythm style distortion, and kick into high gain when I turn the pedal on.

                I love this pedal.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I love the sound of a Klon through a tube amp but don't have $2000 to buy one. I bought one of these to try out & liked it so much I bought 2 more. I had the chance to do a shootout with the Soul Food, a Klon KRT and a Kit-Klone (Boogie Monster) and was very pleased. The Soul Food did a very good job keeping up with both pedals. It was not exactly the same, but for the price no one in the audience would know the difference. The real Klon was a bit more transparent but the Soul Food was close. I bought these extra two to try some aftermarket mods out there. For the money you really can't go wrong if you like clean boost or medium overdrive. If you are looking for massive distortion, this isn't for you. If you amp sounds bad this pedal will not make it sound great. If you have a good base tone & want to make it sound bigger & better, this might be the pedal for you.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I know one reason the price point is low. Sub-par components. The pots aren't metal shafts all the way through - they're like internal trim pots with the shaft glued on. My drive knob was over-tightened at the factory and came off when I used it because the 'dial' part is glued to the 'pot' part.

Also, you can't get much drive and maintain unity gain. If you only want to use it for volume boosting, or leave it on all the time, or use it for mild grit at unity gain, it's great.

Quiet as can be, great tone, nice mid-hump, etc. But it does have drawbacks. Oddly, all EH would need to do to fix the unity gain problem is use a different pot value / pot curve.

Like almost every pedal I've ever tried, the best sounds are found at way less than full throttle on the knobs. I'm also fairly certain that a little patience dialing in a sound you like will yield a satisfying outcome. Great value for the price , too.

This pedal is a must have for any fans of traditional overdrive. It sounds very close to my dimed '77 Marshall JMP 2204, no kidding. Playing the Soul Food through a clean Fender combo at bedroom volume gets extremely close to sounds that I recorded with that Marshall.

One thing to note is that the pedal is VERY midrange heavy, and lacks some low end (a good thing for overdriven guitar IMHO). Modern metal players will probably want to pass on this one, but it would probably do well for Maiden, Priest, etc. The sweet spot is definitely 70's rock though, Queen, Stones, etc.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a very responsive pedal. Turn a knob a quarter of an inch and you have a very different tone. Unfortunately, it's an extremely limited pedal in terms of useful tones. Anything over 9 - 10 o'clock on the gain mushes your tone to a mid-rangey mess. I can't see this being a stand alone overdrive pedal, and it's a little too colored to be a good boost pedal.

I can see how folks compare this to the Klon - TONS of mids and warm overdrive.

I feel like I'm the only guy not to like this pedal so far. But, to be clear, I didn't rate it low because I didn't bond with it. I rated it low because it has limited usefulness and it muddies up tone. I think some folks might love it, but it's not my cup o' tea.

I bought myself a Soul Food hoping to have something that sounds like my Gold Klon for gigging. The SF wasn't even close, so don't believe the marketing. It'll do a clean boost alright, but the drive is nothing like what you get with the real thing. Not that it's bad, it's just not what it's made out to be. All the life is gone and it doesn't blend as good with my tubes. I can get closer with my Bad Monkey. I'm sending this back and trying some other clone. A shame that so many players will buy this thinking its a cheap way to see what the hype is all about when it doesn't even sound Klon-like.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this about six months ago, and, although it's got some nice sounds, I never really found a good use for it. The pedal worked decently as a clean boost, but the drive was only "okay" and gave me just a little too much noise to find myself using it all that often. The treble boost adds some nice harmonic edge, but it too adds quite a lot of noise along with it (which very well may depend on your rig). To put it in perspective, turning the treble above 2 O'clock adds more noise than any of my high gain pedals.

Long story short- I suggest you try before you buy. I wanted to like it a lot, but using it as a clean boost never really knocked my socks off, and I was left wanting an OD with more gain options and a little more "beef". If you try it and love the clean boost enough - you might as well buy it, but I'd say there's a decent chance it just won't sync up with your style and/or gear.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

My overdrive prayers have been answered. I have been trialing and some erroring when it comes to pedals. Performance was my first priority, and cost is always a factor. Some overdrives that haven't suited me have gone back. The Soul Food is not my first keeper but it may make my OCD clone redundant.

True rich unflavored (pun intended) overdrive, uncompressed, mild to slightly wild. What goes in comes out tone-true is what I mean. I also looked at a Tube Screamer. There are a lot of similarities but I still liked the Soul Food best.

It's not for everyone. The drive doesn't go as high as many other OD pedals, but the range between light and medium is micro adjustable. I play out of a Gibson Les Paul Jr. Special with humbuckers into a Vox AC 15, mostly, and the tone is just perfect. I just set all 3 dials at 11:00 any time I want a little soul. Raise the Level control a little and just wail. I haven't tried my Telecaster yet but I expect first class tone results there too.

The 9 VDC power supply comes with it from the factory. I already have a box full of them that I might sell at the next yard sale for a few clams. Very thoughtful of them just the same. This thing draws over 20 mA current so I don't expect a 9V battery to last long.

I don't need an Obsessive overdrive very often, so my Soul Food is my most used and best loved by far. I hope it lasts a long time.

I have a Klon, and this is very close. It lacks a little something, but for less than 1/4 the price of the new Klon KTR, this is hard to beat. The internal buffer (part of what made the Klon so amazing) has been mostly reproduced. thisbpedsl sounds great in buffered bypass, and of course, true bypass works well too.

This pedal stacks well with other gain pedals works well as a clean boost, but also sounds great used as a solitary low-to-medium gain drive.
