Solved my 60 cycle hum problem

Features:

I recently switched out my noiseless pickups on my Strat for some Texas Specials which are very hot and produce alot of the typical 60 cycle hum found in all single coil pickups.  I play in a church that has old wiring and computer/projectors nearby and the hum became very noticeable.  I bought the Hum Debugger plugged it in and no hum!  This pedal is amazing.  Some folks have said that it colors your sound slightly but I haven't noticed any difference and I am a tone fiend.  My rig is simple, just a tube screamer and a delay pedal.  As for features, its either on or off.  There is a strong setting but I found it wasn't necessary to use.

Quality:

Seems to be well built and solid.  EH has a good reputation for high quality products.

Value:

$120 might seem pricey but having no 60 cycle hum is well worth the cost.

Overall:

The Electro Harmonix Hum Debugger pedal is essential to your rig if you have single coil pickups and want to remove 60 cycle hum from your tone.  With my simple setup I haven't noticed any loss of tone quality. Now I have the best of both worlds, vintatge Strat pickups with no noise.  This pedal really works.

It Works!

Features:

I've tried for years to remove single coil hum.  Attenuators, shielding, new pickups, you name it.  Sometimes it's been so bad that even humbuckers hummed!

This device fixed it first time.  Easy to use, easy to hear.

Penalties?  A slight nasal effect to the tone, but hey...that's a lot better than hum and can be generally fixed by tweaking a tone control.

If you have hum from your guitar....get this box.

too much colour for me

Features:

not many. on off, normal-strong lift...

Quality:

seems good

Value:

a bit pricey

Overall:

It does what it claims, LOWERS the hum/buzz/hiss level, but with way too much colouration.

I  play all single coils (2 G&L's with standard Strat/Tele style pu's  and a Hamer Vanguard with P90's) thru an early US made Fender Pro Jr and  a gorgeous Reeves Custom 10HG with Weber loaded 1x12 cab. The buzz and  60cycle hum I endure on a daily basis would make most modern guitarists  cringe.

While the Hum Debugger lifted the noise considerably it  also ruined the sound of these Class A tube amps. The Fender became  unbearably shrill and the Reeves sounded like it was inside of a damp  aluminum can. Very odd and hard to describe the tinny-ness of the  resulting tone.

Perhaps if you use massive chains of stomp-boxes  and you're noise issue is of a different nature than mine this may be  the solution for you. Not for me. I'm not much of an FX fan. Tone is in  your fingers and your gear.

Single-Coils Hum No More...

| Review By: Guideon Berry | 9 months, 3 days ago

0 people out of 0 found this review helpful

Features:

As far as features go, the Electro-Harmonix Hum Debugger has few. The pedal has an on/off stomp switch and a toggle switch to switch between "Normal" and "Strong" hum canceling. Though, all this pedal needs to do is cancel hum, more settings for hum cancelation would have been nice. However, this pedal serves it's purpose with the limited settings it has.

Quality:

The Hum debugger overall seems sturdy and well put together. The tough metal shell and durable stomp switch don't look like they will break down anytime soon. One concern of mine is the toggle switch. The switch itself is very tiny. I could see a problem should an accident occur on stage or in the practice pad. The toggle looks like it could snap right off, but it hasn't seemed to be a problem so far.

This pedal can alter the way your guitar sounds if put in the wrong place in your pedal board (as with any pedal). You can get a metallic sounding tone to your signal if utilizied incorrectly.

Value:

This pedal is a little pricey, but it is the best investment you can make if you have a guitar with single-coil pick-ups.

Overall:

Overall this is a great pedal. The hum cancelling is superb, but you may need to experiment with the order of your pedals if you plan on putting this in your daisy chain. Be cautious when using the "Normal/Strong" toggle switch as it is a little weak feeling.
