Great amp with classic Blackface tone in the clean channel and a bit more gritty in the drive channel. Quarter-power switch is a great feature that, while at low volumes isn't too noticeable, makes a big difference when the amp's cranked. Tremolo is good and the tube driven effects loop and reverb are great. Would have been nice if the stock tubes were of a bit higher quality but it's only the 2 12AX7As (reverb and loop drivers) that were disappointing.

Great tube sound for blues, I had a Hot rod 212 and never got the full rich sound I wanted. This had it from the first note. 1/4 switch has great sound and perfect for band practice

THAT TONE-One good example-

Been using Fender amps since early '60s. This Pro Reverb 'All Tube' seems to have the sweet tone ability to get it from my '53 Tele! Two chan - clean & dist. plus 1/4 power, should cover most any gig situation. Nice features in back - bias adj. panel, send/receive, amp in/out, 4-button footswitch. Heavy maple-ply cabinet, and a good ol' Jensen speaker - my sentiments exactly!!

it has the best distortion and the best clean

By Anonymous

The distortion rocks like no other. And with the click of a button the nicest sharpest clean. Plus stunning reverb and great acoustic effects.

Fat cab, vintage sound

I like everything about this amp with one minor exception: the Gain channel has too much overdrive -- any setting above '2' is total distortion.

for what it is, an actual real tube amp just like the 60s but built now, this amp delivers the sound for 2/3 the price of buying a relic

Pros

  • Extensive opportunity to model reverb.
  • Great characteristic Blackface clean tones.
  • Impressive low-end response
  • Output

Cons

  • Drive Channel
  • Less than desirable Highs
  • Master volume can be finicky

Best Uses

I use the Pro Reverb in a high-school jazz group. I began using this amplifier immediatly after it being re-tubed, and was very impressed with its clean tones for Jazz and Blues music. Paired with a p-90 in neck position or a Humbucker split between Neck and Bridge, this am creates mellow and lush cleans. A treble pickup tone or a tone based in Highs however is less satisfactory. I find tones with mid's scooped or high treble to be abrasive and harsh from this amp, however with an appropriate amount of bass and mids, a thick treble tone can be found and enjoyed.
I do however find little to no use in the dirty channel. I initially perceived this channel to serve the purpose of a high boost, or transparent overdrive, but low levels of gain are met with a again harsh and crackly drive. As you increase the gain to distortion/fuzz levels, the tone becomes fat and cumbersome. This however seems to be not a HUGE issue to me, due to the fact that not many people would play through a Blackface amplifier (aside from perhaps a Super Sonic,) and expect a rich and sparkling heavy gain or clean boost. This is what effects pedals are for! :D
All in all, this amp offers a great clean base in which to build a tone of your own upon. It's dense reverb controls and spacey headroom offers a vast area of space to explore tonally.
