Comments about Hughes & Kettner Statesman Quad EL84 40W Combo with Footswitch and Slip Cover:

          First impressions:

Just some home playing with my Stratocaster so far. This amp has personality in a real good way. Very touch sensitive, just rake the pick across the strings you can hear & feel that little extra effervescence. Dig in and the amp responds with authority! This amp does not struggle in any way. It's tight and muscular! Really helps with single coils! No desire to change out the speaker at all. Oversize cabinet and unique semi closed back design get two thumbs up!

Drive channel responds great to guitar volume knob articulation & touch dynamics. Clean with twang is awesome too. Reverb ratio knob is wonderfully functional! Only one small minor complaint so far. Tube rattle when using the distortion channel. I did buy this unit used. So it's been shipped around a bit. For the great price I paid. I am willing to work this out. Tubes are fragile and travel can rough on them. Easy access valve cover is nice as well.

I have played a Tube Meister 36 before and this amp has a similar type of tone. Not identical but similar in that hi-fi kind of way. For my needs, basement band practice and occasional pub gig. I like the Statesman combo better.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Statesman Quad EL84 40W Combo with Footswitch and Slip Cover:

Amp has a great tone, warm and full, opened sounding, not compressed, not muddie at all to my ears. It sounds like a stack as H&K states on thier website and as others state in the MANY online reviews i found, the stack sound may not be what some are looking for, but it's got the big stage sound i love, not thin and wimpy in the least bit. Handles wah and OD/Dist. pedals great into the front end, as well as the Treble Booster i use. In the efx loop i use a Line 6 M9... it's perfect in the loop. The drive channel is where this amp really shines, great drive sound and the boost on this channel increases the gain with just a bit more volume (no big/huge vol. jump), i can get Gary Moore tones in spades here, as well as many other great tones, add my TB, Exotic EP Boost or my KoT pedals low gain side and it will sing for days, notes will hang forever and break into controllable feedback harmonics. I use the Twang on the clean channel and this brightens it up nicely since the 2 channels share the eq, the drive channel is darker sounding the clean is a bit dark too even with the Twang button in, but i address that with my OD/Dist. pedals eq's.

I got this as the stupid deal of the day and did send the first one back as it had a volume bleed on the clean channel, meaning when the volume is down all the way signal still pass's through, the replacement did the same and from online reviews others had the same to say about it... i decided i could live with it as i love this full sounding dream machine of an amp and would of gladly paid full price.

So that's my 2 cents, hope it was helpful.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Statesman Quad EL84 40W Combo with Footswitch and Slip Cover:

When I first turned it on I was not getting the sound I wanted on the dirty channel. It was a very vintage British sound with heavy mid range which some people would like. I was looking for a clean tight overdrive sound like Billy Gibbons. After trying every eq combination I could find I finally found the sound and it was great. I leave the boost on and the gain at 9 o'clock. The bass at 5 o'clock, mid a 8 o'clock and the tremble at 2 o'clock. The amp sounded fantastic and had punch and dynamics. This is a very well built amp and should have many years of life. You can get many different sounds on both channels but you will have to experiment with the eq settings to find what you want. The reverb is good but not like a vintage reverb. This amp you have to mess with and find the sound that you want. At first I was disappointed but now I love it.This amp has multiple personality's and should be institutionalized but I love her. It just goes to show how characteristics of a tube amp can change with your settings. She is a keeper.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Statesman Quad EL84 40W Combo with Footswitch and Slip Cover:

I purchased on the Stupid Deal of the Day! There were no reviews posted on this equipment and an independent opinion was unavailable; except for H.K's. The signs were ignored by me. I hope that it was just defective but I will stick with proven and tested winner's. Thank you Musician's Friend for your great service on all of my purchases and my only return! You guys are the best!
