I got this amp while Musician's Friend was blowing them out during their President's Day Sale for 299. I've owned Marshalls, Oranges, and Peaveys and I have to say that even at the regular 699 price, this amp is just as good (if not better) than all of these. If you love the Soldano sound, then you'll like this. Keep in mind that though this amp was designed by Mike Soldano, this won't sound exactly like a real Soldano right off the bat (less focused, more open-sounding).

Both channels on the amp are very versatile. The crunch channel can go from clean to 80's while the overdrive channel is smoother, more defined, and can do everything the crunch channel can. Yes, it can also do teh br00tlz. I would buy this amp just for the overdrive channel, but the crunch channel can be useful as well. Stock, it does sound pretty fizzy though. You'll need to change tubes to get the best sound you can. I recommend going to the Eurotubes website and checking out their tube bundles for this amp.

One pleasant surprise for me is that my amp included a depth knob, which was not a feature listed on the website. This is a modification that many people with Soldanos and Jet Cities add onto their amp. It works flawlessly and adds more low end to the amp.

The only reason that this amp doesn't 5 stars is that it doesn't sound the most amazing stock. But compared to all of the newer Marshall's, Oranges, Bugeras, Peaveys, and Blackstars, this amp blows them away.

Really wanted to like this amp. My 20W Jet City JCA2212C COMBO is awesome!

The first one was hissing so badly that it was unusable so I returned it and got a replacement.

The replacement was not as noisy but there was clearly something wrong with it. Replacing the tubes a month later with JJ 12AX7A's and JJ 6L6GC's didn't make it any quieter.

The 20W EL84 Jet City JCA2212C actually has more gain that this JCA5012C.

There seems to be something wrong with these amps. I had two that were too noisy and the last one wasn't tube related.

Mine does have the DEPTH knob and it sounds great turned up loud, but it's too noisy for anything other than stage use, the hissing will drive you crazy.

I know hi-gain tube amps are not quiet, but I have the 20W one that is quiet and also an AMPEG GVT52-112 that kills this in every way (Unfortunately no longer available) and that's quiet also.

I actually need a 50W head now, and want to try the Jet City JCA50H, but since this is the same circuit, I might be dealing with the same issue.

This amp is very well made, and the Jet City guys are easy to deal with, and very informative at the NAMM shows...

It's still under warranty so I'll send an email to JET CITY and hopefully they might have a warranty station in the San Diego / Los Angeles area.

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA5012C 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I swapped out the inexpensive Eminence Legend speaker for an Eminence Governor. Sold right here on MF. With that simple change the amp went from OK to very very good. Sound is up front and in your face. It's clear or throaty depending on the channel. The clean is really good. The OD is excellent. Great fun. I have it setting right next to a Vox AC30 and a Mesa Lodestar. In comparison those two seem lifeless. And ......and.......those are my 2 fave amps.
There is some residual noise on the clean channel when you crank it up. I am trying isolate that. Then again it does just come from it being very pressed.
The OD channel has some noise too. But what do you expect from a good OD channel.

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA5012C 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

If you check the reviews, you'll see some debate about whether this amp is noisy, or just normal for a high-gain unit...let me weigh in on that: I've played for 45 years, normally use an ANCIENT Supro Thunderbolt (and for recording, an even more ancient Jennings...like a Vox AC15), and the amp I received was 20 times noisier than either of those...I sent it back despite the great price, couldn't run it above 2.5 channel, 2.5 master

If you can use a soldering iron, there are numerous mods to be found on the Internet. Replace the stock tunes with decent aftermarket ones and rebias it and you will be in business.

I normally play through a 50 watt marshall with a 4x12. I wanted a 1x12 combo that I would be happy with for small rooms. This amp is a beast. Great tone on both channels. Plenty of headroom.
The amp had quite a hum, but not the end of the world. Then it quit working! Turned out to be a bad solder joint on the bias control. I fixed that and modded it to clear the hum, and now it's even better!

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA5012C 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This is a great amp. If you are in a rock band and are looking for an amp, this is a terrific score. It's loud, has great tone, decent headroom. I paid a pittance for mine (stock) as a used 'stupid deal.' I'm not sure I would pay full price for it, but if you pick one up used or on sale, it is well worth the money.

The tone of this thing is really good. If you use it to practice with, you are not going to really hear the good tone. I use mine as a practice amp because I'm not in a band, and I have noticed that it gets much better tone as you turn it up. If you aren't going to crank this thing at some shows, you might be better off with a Blackstar 5 or 20 watt that sounds a little better turned down. Anyway, to me, it sounded 80s metal bright and brash with a kind of AC/DC crunch channel right out of the box. I put some JJ tubes in it and a v30. That darkened it up quite a bit and made it a little more modern sounding. You don't have to make the adjustments though. It just depends on your tastes.

The bad things? Well, it is a HUGE cabinet. 42 lbs is not unforgiveable for a 1x12 combo, but the massive size of this thing is stupid. It is big enough to house 2 12" speakers and awkward. It doesn't seem to take all pickups equally. It seems especially bad with most single coils. Certain humbuckers sound better than others. I liked the ones on my PRS SE the best. Doesn't like actives. Les Paul sounds okay. You can only get the good tone by turning it up, so it is not a fun practice amp unless you have some serious separation from neighbors. I have been considering a mod to open it up a bit, but really, if I turn it up, it sounds great. You don't need to mod it. It doesn't really put out enough bass for drop tuning. Maybe it would work for drop Db, but my drop Bb axe sounded really weak in the lower registers. I get absolutely zero buzz out of this thing, but to be fair, I have never had the master volume higher than 4.

So really, the good far outweighs the bad. If you have a single family detached dwelling, you can probably turn it up enough to get good tone.
You won't want to transport it. If you can leave it at a rehearsal space or maybe leave it setup at a gig, you are going to like it a lot more than if you have to move it back and forth. Great tone. To me it's 80s rock/metal out of the box, and a speaker change/retube turns it into something very close to an actual Soldano. Great amp for a hard rock band, probably enough gain for a unique metal sound. Not great headroom for 50W but good enough to get over a drummer. Yes, I would recommend this amp, but not at full price. There are a lot of deals to be had on Jet City stuff.

Let me preface this review by saying that I bought this amp discounted and would never pay full price for this(or any other)amp unless I started playing as an occupation, which I don't. I bought this amp on a whim (I have 17 other amps of varying sizes and configurations)and am glad that I did. It has a thick compressed sound that really goes well with my double-humbucker equipped guitars. Sure there is some noise, but in the context of a whole band the noise isn't noticeable. It's also got a simplicity that I find reassuring in this age of countless digital effects and processors. Obviously only time will tell as far as the durability, but my initial impression (after about 4 months) is that it's a keeper for sure.
