OVERVIEW

EL-34-powered, 50-watt guitar combo amp with a smart, exclusive preamp that sounds better at all levels.

The Defender from Kustom provides an intoxicating blend of hot tube amp tones and never-before-seen features. To maximize the amp's classic tone, The Defender is built of solid Pine and uses a Plywood Baffle Board. All-Pine construction gives the amplifier a rich, resonant tone that will inspire any lover of historic tube amps. The cabinet is covered in high-quality black Tolex with a raised stitching pattern, similar to a motorcycle seat.

An exclusive preamp operates unlike any other. Called Duo-Mod, the proprietary Kustom circuit uses traditional Volume and Master Volume controls, but that's where the similarity ends.

Here's how it works: When turning the Defender's Volume control down to get cleaner tones, the Duo-Mod circuit progressively reduces gain in multiple locations throughout the preamp. The result is stunning clarity throughout the Gain control's entire range. In other words, clean tones get cleaner and medium-gain tones stay chunkier and dynamic, while not sacrificing their higher-gain potential.

In the medium-to-high gain ranges, the Kustom Duo-Mod circuit progressively adds gain in multiple locations throughout the preamp. The result is smoking hot rock tones with punch and clarity that set it apart. In essence, the Kustom Duo-Mod circuit produces a wide variety of tones from a deceptively simple one-channel amplifier without the need for additional gain switches or controls.

The Defender's Master Volume doesn't merely control the overall amplifier level. The guitar amp also optimizes the amp's overall EQ to produce perfectly tweaked tonal results no matter how the input Volume and Master Volume controls are set. For example, when the input Volume is cranked for distortion and the Master is set lower, the amp's midrange and high-end are adjusted to eliminate any harshness. This system lets players make large changes in gain settings with minimal adjustments of tone controls.

For added flexibility, the Defender amp also has a Master Volume Bypass switch, which lets players entirely disable the Master from the circuit to achieve the penetrating tone and headroom of vintage, non-Master type amplifiers. It's perfect for players who like to use outboard overdrive and distortion boxes to spice up their sound. For even more power amp gain, a variable Power Amp Boost control provides up to 10db of footswitchable volume that is perfect for making guitar solos stand out in the mix.

Amplifier features include two EL34 output tubes, three 12AX7 preamp tubes, a 12-inch Kustom speaker and a Bright switch that provides either a fuller, American-style bass response or a tighter, British flavored low-end. A player's preference of either EL34 or 6L6 power tubes may be used in The Defender, thanks to a switch which adjusts the amp's bias circuitry accordingly ” perfect for guitarists who like to experiment with their tonal options.

A classic spring reverb circuit provides everything from a warm, ambient effect to an all-out cavernous wash of sound.

FEATURES
  • Two EL34 output tubes
  • Three 12AX7 preamp tubes
  • 12" Kustom speaker
  • Bright switch
  • Amp bias circuitry adjustment switch allows use of either EL34 or 6L6 power tubes
  • Classic spring reverb circuit

Before buying a tube amp you should play it unless you have the money to add this as a band practice amp or for a bedroom. It sounds different then a fender but it has really nice clean sound(s). If you use a couple pedals to help color your sound this is a good fit but if your only going to use this without any pedals you should look at a more distinct amp like a vox or certain fenders/other amps.
A great clean tube tone that you can use as the base of your sound with a crazy bright switch. The cleans on this guitar sound imbetween a PA and a Fender to me... Really clean and overly bright when using the bright switch. My acoustics sound better through this then my PA (not a good di box). However the amps distortion is okay but don't plan on using it. Plenty of watts to play with a drummer and in a small to small-medium club. The amp also took a holy grail and a tube overdrive pedal with no issues.
Birch cabinet although very thin is nice. The cover is a little too thin and will get nicked through to the wood from minor bumps. It is a tube amp so some more care is required but that being said mine died on me and I couldn't get any local amps guys to fix it so its off to Kustom (hopefully) to see if they will stand by it. It makes me nervous to see it so low here and not shown on Kustom's website anymore as they have an updated model/version of this amp for more money.

When the amp worked I loved it as much as a fender hot rod deluxe (if not more as I really like playing my acoustics through it better) minus the reverb which is crazy deep and dark. But I use a Holy Grail which I prefer anyway. Although there is starting to be more reports of this particular amp dying and also a lot of the same time periods bass amps dying.
For the price it's a great deal, but just make sure that you buy the extended coverage as in my case you might need it. It's resale won't be as good as a fender but it's cheaper, so if your not someone who changes gear alot go for it. I think this amp is just as loud/good as a deluxe but the reverb is not that useable for me.

Bought this amp earlier this year, and absolutely loved its rich tone. It is a versatile amp that has great clean sounds, and very nice dirty sounds. However, within a few months I started inexplicably breaking power tubes left and right. After spending about $200 in replacement tubes, serious hissing started developing. This amp has been in the shop 4 times over the last 3 months and there is still an annoying hiss that will not go away. It breaks my heart, but I'm going to have to sell it and buy a different amp.I recommend this amp to a hobbyist, that won't have to rely on it for a gig. To anyone else, I recommend you go for a more tried and tested model.

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I don't write reviews, ever, so this is serious. I'm very happy with Musicians Friend and Kustom for getting this amp to me. I was worried at first, buying an amp before playing it, but I put a lot of faith reviews, and also I went on youtube and saw this Thai dude just wailing on this amp and that did it for me. He got all kinds of sounds out of it. But, now, having wailed on it myself, I wouldn't ever give it up. Love it. Would buy it again tomorrow...Had to wait several days to write this review because I just can't stop playing.
Wanted simple, no frills, but didn't want to have limited sound options either. This amp is perfect for me. I'm impressed at the tone despite having only EQ, reverb, 2 volumes, boost, and presence knobs...It's not so low on features that my sound is limited, and it's not got a gazillion buttons and knobs that just wastes time.
This amp is a great buy. The sound is so smooth, so LOUD. The louder it gets, the better it sounds but I've also got that creamy breakup of the tubes at low volume, thanks to the cool 'master bypass' switch. It's very well made and got that solid soft-wood cabinet (pine) that just projects so well. This thing is what I've been missing because it's picking up the nuances of my playing that other amps did not. It is a perfect extension of all my guitars (tele '52 reissue, Gibson Les Paul, Epiphone Casino, and Fender Strat with EMG-20's) and even my mandolin sounded sweet through it!
I showed my friend this amp (let him play it) and he said he had to have one----The sound (tone) is so much bigger than the price. At first I wanted a vox ac30 or fender something-or-other tube amp but that would've taken me much longer to save up for. I'm convinced I've made the right choice.

Great tone and power at a very affordable price!

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

After doing plenty of homework and research, I'd decided on this amplifier over a Fender Blues Jr. (a choice many might argue with). I needed more power than the Blues Jr. could provide, and judging by plenty of videos of this amp that I've heard, the tube tone was very comparable.

When I got this amplifier, I immediately took it in and plugged my Fender Jazzmaster into it. I started with a clean tone, and boy was I impressed. I was getting outstanding, Fender-like cleans for a fraction of the price - crystal clear sound at low volumes. After cranking the channel volume and keeping the master volume down, I was getting a very round, thick crunch; a pleasant, warm, and full tone. After toying with some of the settings, I found that every knob and switch was very usable, and added plenty of diversity to the possible tones of the amp. The spring reverb stuck out as high-quality, it could either provide a light ring or a flood of sound. It was also on the dark side, and definitely a more "ambient" reverb.

The Kustom Defender amp provides excellent tube cleans and tube overdrive at a very low price. I've remained very impressed by the quality and reliability of this amp, and I've only been able to find one downside: when playing at very high volumes, the bass can get a bit muddy and the treble a bit harsh (too "sharp.") In response to this, I'm replacing the stock speaker with an Eminence Cannabis Rex.

Aside from the stock speaker being of average quality, every other component was top-notch and the tone of this amp was outstanding for the price. Shimmering Fender cleans and Hiwatt-like overdrive. I can only see the tone getting better with an upgraded speaker or upgraded tubes (it can handle either EL34's or 6L6's!)

Overall, I highly recommend this amplifier for anyone looking for a loud, versatile, high-quality tube sound. The real kicker, in my opinion, is the price! How could you go wrong for power and tone like this at such a low price? Stop pondering and just buy it, you won't regret it!

This amp has great tone-reverb-volume, I play it clean. I like this amp with 6l6 tubes, it is not a peaky on the mid and highs, Master volume bypass is a nice feature. All pine cab for tone and light weight. full size reverb tank, impedance switch for 4-8-16 ohms on rear panel. The reverb is not dark sounding, if you like the fender combo reverb you will like this one, amp is very quite, A lot of eq in the controls.

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

In a world full of expensive tube amps this was a welcome surprise. The sound quality is great, the construction is great. If I had to pick one thing I do not like it's the chrome knobs. But for the price who cares.
I have only owned 2 other tube amps . A fender super reverb purchased new about 1965 and then a musicman RD50-110 purchased new sometime in the 80's. My son borrowed the musicman and the fender is long gone. I needed a replacement. I tried 3 waymore expensive amps - 2 Vox Tony Bruno's and a Peavey Delta blues. The Vox's hummed loudly and weighed a ton. The Peavey sounded great but was a very large amp. This Kustom is not small but not too big. It's light enough to move around and I have no complaints about the sound.
If your a tube amp snob this is not for you. If your looking for a great amp at a reasonable price , this is the one. I am almost tempted to buy another for the price.

gave it an 8 because I want the cover, and although its on the kustom website,no one has it at this time, but the fender hot rod deluxe 112 cover will fit.
Been so "solid stated' in the last 15 years, thought I would check out this amp based on the reviews, price, and size.
Man,was I missing this tone! great sound, size and its LOUD!!
Works well with all my pedals, and is fantastic just by itself.
Came with a broken jewel lite cover, called Kustom and was mailed to me in 2 days.
as always, Musicians Friend offered a replacement, but the way this item sells out, I didnt want to take a chance on waiting again. Other than that, no complaints.
man for the money, the tone is killer. right up there with the ac50s and alike.
      you cant go wrong.

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

On a chance, I decided to buy a Danelectro Fish and Chips to equalize the horrible treble control of the amp. I am upgrading my overall rating. With this equalizer, the clean tone is amazing. With controls all the way up, the Fish and Chips gives a nice overdriven sound. No wonder this amp sold out so quickly. A good buy.

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

The features allow a lot of tweaking to get your own tone, it's not a "1 tone amp".It's mostly made of pine but there is some particle board used as blocks. Some of the speaker screws were already stripped & the rivetts were turning as the scew would turn. I was planning swapping out the speaker for curiosity but no go, besides the stock speaker sounds good. And there's the abilities to switch the bias via switch if 6L6 tubes are ever used and there's a 4,8 & 16 ohm selector for speakers. All in all, very nice features for the cost & a 1 channel amp. *I'm currently playing a 2007 Les Paul Standard & another 2006 LP Vintage Mahagony, both w/ Burstbucker Alnico V pups.*Classic rock, Christian & blues. Suits me just fine. I don't care for ULTRA clean tones because it's always missing something...oh yea, distortion. But then again I'm not a distortion hog but I do like character w/ my clean tones & this amp does it. I mostly play the amp straight w/ no master volume & rollback the gtr vol to clean up which works VERY NICELY! The high end definition is still there at low gtr volumes but that may be the Burstbuckers. It takes my effects very well, modified DS-1 distortion, mod TS9 & a mod TS7 (all Monte Allums mods) & currently using a Line 6 POD X3 Live in a bypass mode(no amp sims, just effects). Pleased but would like to play the amp straight w/ just a good delay, vol pedal & a good dist pedal for lead...I like to keeps things simple. The bright switch in combination w/ the tone controls provide a wide variety on tones, the bright switch dosen't just brighten...it actually changes the tone. And the mid range can cause more distortion when turned up. The amp can go from ZZ Top to AC/DC & clean up nicely in btween and reacts to your playing...nice dynamics, definately not flat like some solid state & digital amps. The harder you play, the harder it sounds & vice/versa. And the overall tone is complex & "swirly", you can hear a bell-like attack beneath the darker tone.*By design of a pure tube amp, it does hiss at high volumes & pops when the strings are touched.*It will not produce an ULTRA clean tone past 3, which dosen't bother me...I just back off on the gtr volume. No problems so far. Only had 2 mos & gigged twice but put about 100 hours of play. I'm just very impressed so far.Been playing & gigging on & off for over 20 years now. I've owned other tube amps such as all the Peavey Classic models & Delta Blues & a Pig Nose all tube 40 watt. I've had some Line6 modeling amps & currnetly own & like the POD X3 Live. It's been an evolving process to get were I'am now...pure tube tone, what I've heard all the years & the Defender is the closest yet (& great for the money). With modeling stuff I was always setteling on 1 or 2 presets which were Marshalls & thought why not go for the real thing.

      Fine amp, but not revolutionary

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I purchased the Defender after playing a friend's Kustom Coupe, thinking it might be a single-channel version. The Defender, while a decent amp for the money, was a little underwhelming in terms of its features. When changing from clean to distorted settings, the amp's tone became much darker, which I did not care for. Although the amp is powerful, compact, and has a good clean tone, the distortion is lackluster preamp distortion, and the components all appear to be cheaper, including the speaker, which does not appear to be an actual Eminence product. The amp still provides a good option for rehearsal or gigging, but I didn't feel it is a true "budget boutique" or a competitor to the likes of Fender.

      Defender Amp

      By gazonked

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I own a Blackface Fender Bandmaster amp from the early 60's not sure of the year. Pre-CBS. Anyway it's a great amp but huge and bulky with the 2x12 cabinet. I wanted something smaller and simple. Every amp made today except for retro stuff has a million effects and emulators built in. I just wanted an amp with some tube overdrive and reverb and this things got it. I played some Orange amps along with some Vox amps. I played the Kustom and it sounded similar to a Fender not exactly but similar. This has the switchout for the 6L6 and EL34 which is another reason I bought it and it works well if you switch them. I prefer the EL34's since I still have the 6L6 Fender. The EL34's that the Kustom came with sucked (no names) so I put some MESA tubes in it. Mine had a bum tube that croaked after about 10 hours of time. This amp is self biasing as well which is great! Ironically the 12AX7's are all Electro Harmonix. Cleaned up the sound quite a bit and got rid of the hissing issue for the most part that another person on here had commented on. The overdrive circuit is nice and clear and the clean channel does hiss a little. I recommend turning all of the settings back to zero in clean and re-dialing in your sound. You can eliminate the hiss for the most part this way. I also turn the presence down when in clean mode. Overall I'm really happy. It sounds great for the price. I think it would be worth it even if it cost more. This things a bargain in my opinion.

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I wound up returning this amp after a few weeks because it didn't work for what I needed. First of all, it was too loud (STRICTLY user error). Second of all, I tried throwing a distortion and fuzz pedals in front of it and they all sounded really harsh and fizzy, like the treble and presence were cranked on the amp. That does not mean that this is an unusable amp. If I were a classic rock or blues guy I would have been far happier with this amp. Should have done my research better beforehand. If you're trying to throw a lot of dirt at the front end I would steer clear of this amp (got a Vox AC15C1 and was much happier). Otherwise hit it hard because it's a well-built, balls-loud amp with a lot of headroom and great features.
Amp shines feature-wise. The ability to bypass the Master Volume is a lot of fun and really where the amp shines (despite the stock description's description of the Duo-Mod preamp it leaves a lot to be desired). Tube options were cool, boost was cool (found myself leaving it on).
I've owned several Kustom products that have lasted for years. This amp is no exception. Very well built. Overall they make a great product.
Seems a great value for the relatively low price. If I needed a loud clean amp I would have stuck with this.

The Defender is a Hobbyist Guitarist D

      By Paparanger

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I am a hobbyist guitarist and have been playing since I was 12 (I am now 58) and have owned many small amps but have never a tube amp. I have been looking for just the right combination of tone, simplicity and physical looks and The Defender has them all. I had the amplifier field narrowed down to two models: Peavey (I?m from Mississippi and I really like Peavey products) Valveking 112 or the Classic 30 but neither had just what I wanted. (Plastic instead of metal input jacks on the Valveking and no standby switch for the Classic 30) The Defender had both. I have not the expertise to critique the nuances but let me say that I will not need another amplifier for my present needs for as long as I can imagine. This for a $ tube amplifier is statement enough without saying more. It would have been a great addition for Kustom to have added a Direct Out like on the Coupe series. I would have gladly paid the extra for this feature.

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I've been playing on this amp for about 6 months now, and I can definitely say it's a great piece of equipment. I switched out the speaker for an Eminence Black Powder, and changed the tubes to JJs. I almost always use it with the master volume bypassed on the bright setting. It does make a little hiss, but such things are to be expected. The controls work as described, the reverb sounds grrreat, and it's handy that you can switch between 4 8 and 16 ohms output, so you can run it with an extension cab. But it's not just that it sounds good for a cheap amp. It just sounds great, period. And it's very tweakable and fun to play with. I recommend the Defender!

      Great sound, NOT RELIABLE

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Bought this amp earlier this year, and absolutely loved its rich tone. It is a versatile amp that has great clean sounds, and very nice dirty sounds. However, within a few months I started inexplicably breaking power tubes left and right. After spending about $200 in replacement tubes, serious hissing started developing. This amp has been in the shop 4 times over the last 3 months and there is still an annoying hiss that will not go away. It breaks my heart, but I'm going to have to sell it and buy a different amp.I recommend this amp to a hobbyist, that won't have to rely on it for a gig. To anyone else, I recommend you go for a more tried and tested model.

this is my 8th amp and I like the sound. If it had a drive switch it would be perfect. Still a good amp for the money

Comments about Kustom The Defender 50W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

i bought mine from a friend. i had never heard of this brand before and was amazed at the quality tube sound and loudness coming out of it. it just so happened that my friend had purchased a 100w silver faced twin (fender) the same day. the fender was definetely louder on the top end but no clearer and the defender seamed to produce even more warm sound than the fender. im just a hobby player but i recomend giving this one a try. for the money i dont think there is any better
