If you've ever faced the problems of booming (or too thin) bass, acoustic feedback, "quacking," nasal sounding treble, or clicking picks, you will welcome this marvelous box. On my very first gig with the Baggs, I told the sound man to set the board flat and let me handle the EQ. With just a little experimentation and adjustment, I was able to boost the bass to the point where it was full but not booming, eliminate quacking and feedback, and balance the sound on my Taylor GS7 across the musical spectrum from low to high.

When the sound man called down from the booth that he could hear my picks clicking on the strings, a few tweaks of the mid-high and presence knobs dialed that right out, without sacrificing volume or clarity on the treble strings.

Admittedly, it's a bit tricky to master the somewhat complex settings on this sophisticated device, and the minimal instructions provided by Baggs don't help as much as one would wish. But there are some helpful videos on YouTube, and with a little experimentation you can get this box under control.

I love the sound that it lets me get out of my guitar, and can't imagine that your experience would be any different. It's also extremely rugged -- built like a tank, in fact -- and should stand up to a lot of on-stage use. I can't imagine ever plugging in without it.

From reading all the rave reviews, I expected an extraordinary piece of equipment. Not so. I was planning on using it with my mandolin, and if it worked out, I'd think of getting another for my D-35. All the different settings did not accomplish much as far as reproducing a natural sound of the instruments. When pushed, I would get barking and distortion. I tried reducing the gain to less than a quarter and still it overloaded. I have a couple of different Fishman preamps that are far superior. Needless to say, I returned it.

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

This para acoustic DI is an absolute essential piece of any acoustic guitar set up. The heavy-duty build quality is second to none, and the sound? Oh my...it makes the expression system in my Taylor 414CE sound like I'm using $2000 studio microphones. The lows are deep and powerful, the mids warm and full, and highs sing more crisply than I've ever heard them. Do yourself a favor and never be without this incredible masterpiece of technology!

Rolls Royce of Preamps

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

It really doesn't take a lot of comments to say how GREAT of a product this is. I have tried various other preamps and, they did fairly well until I decided to try one of these and, WOW!!!! what a difference it made with the sound of my fiddle. I could not believe the absolutely clean pristene sound that I heard and, I might add without any EQ, EQ this unit and tweak it just a little bit and, it is totally AWESOME!!!!!! Granted it is a little costly but, I have found throughout my years of playing that you might as well go first class and, get the best you'll be glad you did. The unit is simple to setup and operate and, I am glad it is battery operated; sometimes the wall wart transformers are a pain to deal with and, having to find enough outlets to plug them into. In summation BUY THIS UNIT, you'll be glad you did.

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

Well you know how some people are when it comes to amplifiers on stage for church worship services. They don't want them because they think everyone will start cranking up and jockeying for sound. So I bought this direct box. Its amazing! You will like it a lot. I plug my acoustic guitar straight in and then send it to the house speakers. We have a Presonus 32.4.1 AI mixer in the new building. My favorite thing about this is the eq settings. I can dial in a sweet tone, my settings are bass at 2oclock, mids at 2 o'clock and presence and highs at 1 o'clock. Gain at 12 and volume at 3. This box is really all you need. I don't like tinny trebly sounding acoustic guitars. The bass and mids are wonderful for balancing out some highs and giving the guitar a "fullness". This box sounds very realistic. It is a very good representation of how the guitar sounds unplugged. I have a B Band pickup under the saddle so i have never had any frequency issues. I don't use the notch. I also use a TC electronic arena reverb pedal. Make sure you send the acoustic into the Para DI first and then to the reverb pedal or else it don't sound good. You can do this by getting an effects send return 1/4" cable and using the FX jack on the DI. Nice feature!! I will say i think this box sounded better on the old analog mixing board at our church, but I'm sure we can tweak it to the Presonus. Our church just moved from a 14,000 sq ft building into a 30,000 sq. ft. new building and new sound system so the room is playing into effect also. You need to keep this in mind. The old room had 12 ft. tile ceilings. The new building has 40 ft. ceilings. I think it sounds good coming out the house but it still sounds a bit digital in my headphones. Especially the b and e strings. That has more to do with the digital mixer though i think.

    Awesome Preamp

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

I use this with My Taylor GS7e. It sounds so crystal clear with this. "I just got this thing and it made a huge difference in the tone and clarity of my guitar before I even adjusted anything." Same thing in my case. It sounded pretty sweet before I even adjusted anything. Once I got everything adjusted it sounded so nice, and I haven't heard a sound that nice from my guitar being plugged in. A couple of months ago I was thinking about getting the Taylor K4 but it is a little to much for me right now. This thing sounds probably just as good or nicer. It is very small so it can fit on a pedal board or in a bag to travel with, and it just sounds so amazing. Also a good feature is the direct box built in so you can go straight into the mixer. Hope this review helped, Thanks for reading, Happy playing, God Bless

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

Noticeable difference in sound quality and realism of acoustic guitar sound through the PA. Switching from my MOTU Ultralite MKIII preamp to this is like using another pickup, and the MOTU doesn't have a bad preamp at all.

I use K&K Sound Pure Western Mini pickups, and this DI/Preamp box is the best possible match for it. Had one with me in India, lost it, and finally bought another one. Forgot what I was missing out on. It's like the guitar is right there, where the speaker is, but so much louder.

The notch filter is useful, but not ideal. It scoops a lot out. The balanced out, unbalanced out, and fx loop are all very useful features. Perfect for wiring to all kinds of strange setups.

I have a Breedlove guitar that sounded weak when plugged straight into my Yamaha mixer. I added this Para preamp to the equation and tweeked it a little as the directions suggested and wow! Excellent sound and no need to turn the channel volume or gain way up anymore. Not only does it have good volume, it has a much more natural sound. Just what I was hoping for!

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

I have owned and used this DI over the past 5 years. It's built to take the road, and makes your instruments sound wonderful. I have used it through different PA's and into my acoustic amp. It helped beef up my old Taylor's Fishman preamp and gave me far greater control using my Genz Benz acoustic amp. Feedback is more easily controlled without the overall sound suffering. It has a small footprint and fits easily in a gear bag. I will buy a second one. They're time tested and road proven.

A staple for the performing acoustic musician

        By William Horn

        See all my reviews

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

The Para Acoustic DI by L.R. Baggs is an essential piece of equipment for the acoustic musician who is tasked with performing in various live environments. With the well tuned bass, presence, and treble frequencies, and sweepable midrange and notch filters, you have just about all the control you could ask for in a highly-portable DI, which comes in clutch when you have to work with varying sound systems. I used one of these DI's for a decade without any trouble whatsoever. They are rock solid and function well. The electronics give a fairly transparent sound, and are only surpassed by boxes that cost four times as much (e.g. the DTAR Equinox & Taylor K4), in my opinion.

The bottom line: this is quite possibly the highest value piece of gear that you can have in your signal chain. I would highly recommend the Para Acoustic DI to anyone who plays an acoustic instrument and has to plug into a system at any point along the way.

        Versatility

        By Anonymous

        from Undisclosed

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

I have been using a Baggs Para DI for about three years and I still get amazed at how it allows me to adjust tone and sound to the room. There are newer and more feature packed(4.5) products out there as this unit does not have a tuner and some of the input options of other manufacturers, however I've used it with a Carvin AE 185, Takemine, Ovation, and a passive solid body bass, and the sound has been excellent with no wall wart and almost no battery use. With the very usable notch, the ulra flexible pre amp, and phantom power, it's just TOO easy to get good sound and I can carry it in the bag with my chord charts. One of our sound techs pushed the XLR without setting the pins and broke (which proves even army tanks can break) the XLR out. Some very nice people at LR Baggs fixed it VERY quickly and had me up and running in no time. The Baggs Para DI really is as good as people claim.

        Years of Use

        By Mountain Bassman

        from San Jose, CA

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

Our band standardized on the LR. Baggs Para Acoustic DI several years ago. We have used it for live performances and recording sessions. The original motivation was the ease of access to the battery but that has not been a problem since we are getting 50-100 performance hours per battery. It doesn?t seem to matter what the input is. We have a 12-string with an unknown pickup from to the 1970s; several instruments with different types of Fishman systems; and a Carvin P-series electric bass and they all sound great coming out of the DI. The only problem we have noted is the strength of the XLR output signal. It is very easy to overdrive the input to the sound board.

        Pure gold!

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

You already heard me rave about this, let me sum up how awesome these are... We were playing a gig in south Florida and for some reason all six of us were away from the stage. It was the end of the night and we were breaking down and loading up the trailer. Well we had our very easily recognized, unlocked money box from our merch sales sitting on the stage next to the three baggs we use. Instead of swiping the cash in the box, someone stole one of our Para DI! That's how good they are - they're better than money.
Let's just create a bullet point list for this one - if you know what these terms are you'llunderstand the high rating: *low, sweepable mids, and high/treb control * notch filter *pres control *fx loop *phantom power (goodbye 9v!) *signal boost... need I say more?
I play in a Celtic Rock/Folk band... I got one of these used off of eBay and it turned my mid-range Charvel (Fishman pickup onboard) into a decent Martin clone. The low-end Dean six string banjo we play had muddy lows and shrill highs - until it went through the Baggs. Our Fender mandolin has always had problems with feedback (heck, it was a low price) - not anymore! The build quality is great. She's a heavy, sturdy, well put together unit. We liked that used one so much we purchased two more new ones.
I normally try to buy and play used gear, because I'm broke. These were so amazing and packed with features we bought two more brand new... and the price isn't ridiculous like on some basic DI boxes with no features that I've seen.

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

I purchased the LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI about 3 years ago to enhance the recordings I was cutting with my trusty Alvarez Summit, and man did it make a WORLD of difference. My Alvarez only had a Fishman preamp, piezo ribbon transducer, (with no controls), so this DI also added the flexibility I needed.Last year I purchased a Parker Fly Mojo and had been playing it straight into one amp for practice and gigs. Last week I made a breakout box (TRS-in and two TS-out). I changed my setup using a custom made tube amp for the Seymour Duncans, and the acoustic out to the Para Acoustic, to a Roland Cube 30 using the clean JC channel. After about 5 minutes of dialing in a good sound on the Para Acoustic I switched the Parker to combine all of the pickups and man??.I?ve been playing and recording since 1968 and I?ve never heard any guitar sound like this. Not only did it amaze me but there were 2 other professional players there and both just stopped playing and listened. The LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI made all of the difference in leveling out my sound on this setup and in my opinion it?s the best sounding device of its kind, as I?ve tried out most of them. It?s also handmade in the USA. If you play an acoustic it?s sorta like the American Express card. Don?t leave home without it.

I use the LR Baggs as a direct box/preamp for my upright with a fishman piezo pickup (PRO-BP1-00B )

I play in an americana/rockabilly act, so volume is an issue with the upright bass. This device is essential in correcting feedback issues. This has greatly helped with feedback control. (Some f-hole covers help, as well.) The notch filter and gain controls are key.

I did find it hard to figure out HOW to use the LR Baggs, though. The instructions are rather useless. However, with some experimentation, it will make life WAY easier with live sound.

I've also had great success with a regular acoustic bass and acoustic guitars live.

I couple of years ago, a friend recommend to me, this little box. Finally, after a long time of research and read opinions I decided to buy one. My God.! That thing really work well. Cuts feed back and tailor your sound. Improv your instrument sound and volume without distortion. The XLR output was a very cool addition. I use it with my acoustic nylon Prudencio Saez. With only a piezo pick up, the gain in qualitu sound was noticeable.I use it too with my Multiac Grand Concert, with great result. Better equalization, more volume, no hiss, no hum, no feedback. I recomment it with my eyes closed. Is a little expensive but its worth fir the money. The box is metal made. Really really a smart buy

Comments about LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp:

I cannot believe this product. Seriously, it should win an award. I have an electric with a fishman powerbridge in it. The acoustic sound was passable prior to the baggs di, but to a tone snob like myself it was annoying to hear that infamous piezo "quack". I have never heard a single device dramatically change the tone and my love for an instrument. This di simply makes whatever you plug into sound better - way better. On the other side of things, don't plug your prized Taylor into a cheap di - get this. If it means you have to buy a cheaper acoustic, get this with it.This is my second lr baggs product (dual source pickup) - those guys absolutely know acoustic tone. They know what it should sound like and how to produce it. Sure this device costs 4x that of an average direct box, but it will make your guitar sound BETTER live...
