The Compressor For Guitarists That Hate Compressors

    By Karl Houseknecht

    from Palmyra, VA

    Comments about Maxon CP101 Compressor:

Best compressor I've used, and really the only one I ever liked. Ultra low noise, natural sustain, compact footprint. Just a great overall pedal and the secret weapon on my pedal board. It took my overdrive and distortion pedals to a whole new level.
Two knobs: Sustain and Level. Sustain does what it says, adds sustain. Level controls the level of the effect. Simple. And that's what distinguishes this compressor from the rest because it's so simple that any guitarist can use it and get great results. No confusing attack or release parameters. Four knobs is too many for most people.

The housing feels like lightweight aluminum instead of heavier steel, which I would have preferred, so it gets a point off for that. The LED is kinda dim. And the footswitch doesn't have a tactile click, another point off. However, since you'll probably only ever turn the pedal on and leave it on for the duration of your playing, this isn't a horrible deal.

I would have liked to see the jacks on the top of the pedal to allow for closer placement on a board, so another point off for that.
In the build quality department, Maxon chose lightweight aluminum instead of steel, but I will say it's still a nicely built pedal. Nothing on it seems cheaply done.

Sound quality is excellent. Little to no additional noise when on, even at higher sustain settings. This is HUGE. Most other compressors introduce lots of hiss as you turn up the sustain. Not this one.

This isn't a Dynacomp or a Keeley 4-knob. You aren't going to get pops, strange attack, or country squish from it. It's more akin to natural tube compression. Great on clean sounds, providing a natural leveling at lower sustain settings. But on overdriven and distorted guitar it gives sustain for days without altering the natural attack. It doesn't sound like you're using a compressor. You can turn down the gain on your pedals or amp and get natural sounding sustain at much lower gain and volume.

Turn the sustain down and level up and you get a nice booster for pedals or your amp!

Maxon's web site touted this pedal as the compressor for guitarists that hate compressors. Perfect description. It's the only one I've liked after trying Dynacomps, Boss, Keeley, EH, etc. It is just bonehead simple to use and nobody, including the guitarist, will feel that you're using a compressor "effect". It just feels and sounds natural, like it should.
With the feature set being minimal, price being more expensive than most of the mainstream options, and the use case being somewhat limited (limited really only to getting natural sustain instead of squish) you'd think the value would be somewhat lowered. However, I contend the value for you money is huge when you consider how much quieter you can play now. I used to like my amps louder and gain higher to generate sustain the natural way. Now I can save my hearing and that of my bandmates.

    OMFG!

    Comments about Maxon CP101 Compressor:

I have gone through several Compressors since my lovely was laid to rest. This thing is DOPE! Buy it you will not be unhappy. It's very subtle unless you really max it out (no pun intended) and adds no ugly color to the signal whatsoever. Pure sustain for your fingertips clean or over driven. The Carlos Santana and Robben Ford type tones are endless and it seems to love overdrive, the more the better. It cleans up well and retains the shimmering colors without squeezing to much in the middle of the band. It's the best pedal I've purchased in years.

    Dang!

    Comments about Maxon CP101 Compressor:

I bought this guitar at a boutique and vintage guitar dealer; I couldn't figure out why the guy carried maxon with his 500-dollar tube compressors and even pro-modded Dyna-comps. I needed a good compressor because my Fender tube amp was way too dynamic, and certain high notes tended to "pop" out of the amp when I didn't want them to, not to mention that my guitar has no sustain through the amp's clean channel. I told the salesman about my problem, and said I was looking for a dyna-comp, or at least something in that price range. He showed me this pedal, and claimed that it was actually closer to the older Dyna-comps, which had more sustain. I plugged it into my Fender, and I even used my crappy stratocaster to really see how much sustain this pedal has. I was astounded at what I heard. It truly sounded like a vintage MXR. So my conclusion for this pedal is that, it works great, is easy to use (although a couple more knobs would be nice); I figure if you can't quite afford a ross or keely compressor, and want that old Dyna-comp sound that everyone's raving about, this pedal can definately to the job for you.

    good product, worth the money

    Comments about Maxon CP101 Compressor:

I've owned this pedal for about a month now. I own 3 compression pedals (boss, digitech main squeeze and this one) and the maxon is my favorite. its effects are very subtle yet get the job done. This pedal does not add any noise while in use and makes chords and appregios sound clear. It makes no change in the tone of the guitar (the boss and digitech may change it a little bit, depending on tone setting), it just makes the clean sound better. The effect is almost unnoticeable w/ heavy distortion. if you are looking for a compressor to give a very heavy sustain and compression effect this pedal is not for you. however if you are just looking to fine tune your tone and make things sound better this pedal is hard to beat.
