OVERVIEW

The quintessential overdrive pedal!

The Maxon OD808 Overdrive is made by the same Japanese company which crafted the original overdrive circuit in a green stompbox that's been obsessed over by guitarists for the past 30 years. It uses the identical circuit found in the original employing the same JRC4558 IC chip for smooth, natural overdrive similar to a cranked-up tube amp. The OD808 pedal responds to the picking dynamics and nuances of your individual style while also letting the true tone of your instrument shine through.

Originally released in 1979, the Maxon OD808 pedal was one of the first tube-amp overdrive simulators to hit the market. Its smooth, creamy crunch tone caught on quickly, and helped to launch a long line of imitators. Today, the OD808 design is without a doubt the most used, most imitated and most lauded overdrive circuit of all time. The reason for this is simple--tone. Simply put, the OD808 provides the natural, mild overdrive of a tube amp without sacrificing your guitar's original tone. In addition, it can be used as a clean booster to provide increased gain without compromising the sound of your amplifier.

The secret behind the legendary "808 tone" lies in the amplifier section of its circuit. Rather than having an amplifier stage followed by a clipping stage, the OD808 uses a signal-distorting diode (Panasonic #MA150) that is located in the amplifier stage's negative feedback loop (which also contains the JRC4558 IC chip). Therefore, the OD808 distorts signal in the amplifier circuit itself which yields a smoother, milder, more natural sounding distortion than a separate clipping stage. This is also the reason that the IC type used in the circuit has such a large impact on the unit's tone. Maxon developed this unique design more than 20 years ago, and while it is commonplace nowadays, back then it was an industry first.

It should be noted that the Reissue Series OD808 uses different output resistors than the original version. After the unit's initial release it was discovered to have a high susceptibility to noise due to static electricity buildup. To improve performance, the positions of the output resistors on the reissue OD808 were reversed and their values increased in order to reduce noise levels. This circuit change has no audible affect on the sound of the unit, save for reducing the noise levels.

Whether it's used as an overdrive or a booster, the Maxon OD808 is the closest you can get to the classic sounds of rock guitar in a compact effect pedal.

"…it"s nearly impossible to dial in a bad sound. If you"re after classic blues/rock overdrive, it would be tough to pick a better pedal."
Guitar Player Magazine, May 2000

"This device is perfect if you dig the sound of your amp but wish it could go up to 11."
Guitar World Magazine, April 2000

"I"d definitely recommend the OD808 to all Tube Screamer fans."
Vintage Guitar Magazine, November 2000

"I always loved the sound of my TS808 …now I can have it all back without the paranoia and anxiety of a feared theft, all at a cheaper price than a vintage one. Bravo!"
20th Century Guitar, October 2000

Past - Present - Perfect: Reissue Series
Faithful reproductions of the legendary '70s product line, the Maxon Reissue Series Effects offer today's musician a classic sonic palette that has defined the tones of guitarists for the past three decades. Each model's circuit is 100% analog and packaged in a time-tested chassis for a lifetime of trouble-free performance. Component quality and PC board layout have been optimized to provide consistent, low noise performance without adding unnecessary coloration to your instrument's tone.

• Rugged, Lightweight Chassis: Made of cast aluminum, extremely lightweight (less than one pound) and strong. Rectangular chassis offers easy interface with other pedal types without taking up excess pedal board or rack space.
• Electronic Bypass Switching: Dual FET (electronic) silent switching with plunger-type activator switch for smooth, quiet bypass. Buffered low impedance outputs will drive long cable lengths with no signal degradation.
• AC/DC Power Operation: power using 9-volt battery (supplied) or AC adapter (Maxon AC210N optional).
• LED Power/Battery Life Indicator: Ultra bright LED indicates effect status (on/off). Dim or no LED indicates that the battery is low or not installed.
• 3-Year Warranty: Godlyke Inc. guarantees to replace or repair (at their option) this product should it suffer from defects in materials or workmanship. Coverage period is one year for moving parts (example: pots, switches, jacks) and three years for non-moving parts (example: IC's, transistors, etc.). Damages caused by accident, abuse, alteration, or misuse are not covered by this warranty. Product appearance and normal "wear and tear" (worn paint, scratches, etc.) are not covered by this warranty. No other warranty is expressed or implied.

Im simply blown away by this pedal. First off it has a new look than the pic. Instead of a gloss finish it is a matte green, which looks much better and meaner than the shiny green. This is THE most aggresive overdrive I have ever used. I use this on my Marshal JVM410H from 70`s rock to the heaviest metal you can play and this pedal kills em all! It tightens up my tone and gives it a gnarly aggresive overdrive bite to it. The knobs are sturdy and snug so they wont move around on you by accident. It is fairly small too. All I can say is wow! First time I fired it up, I laughed at how mean my tone was. I cant recall any other time that my tone was so good I laughed!

I reviewed this product late last year and was completely impressed with its sound quality, but somewhat concerned with its build quality. Not even three months into ownership, and light use, the pedal's switch has failed. In addition, the tone knob came loose quickly and fell off.Worst yet, calls to 'Godlyke Inc.'(US Distributor) for warranty requests do not even get returned. I have 20 year old MXR pedals that are rock solid, and calls to Jim Dunlop inc. are answered and needs immediately tended too..I'm DONE with Maxon..Think hard before you spend the big bucks, it doesn't always mean better!

    A NEED FOR METAL

    By Yall know me

    from Windsor Ontario

Comments about Maxon OD808 Guitar Overdrive Pedal:

I gave it a 4 on quality because my buddy had his break on him but that's it. If you're using this for metal here's what you're gonna wanna do. Dial in the best heavy tone on your amp with out the pedal. Put the Overdrive on the pedal on 0 (if you're using this and you play metal this isn't my personal preference, it's how you best use the pedal trust me.) Then set the Balance/level (w/e it's called) to 10 which will be a little bit too hot, but keep it at 10, just turn down the gain on your head and slowly bring it up till it sounds about right (this works better then leaving your head gain normal and putting the level/balance only to 6 or so) then set the tone control and sometimes adjust your EQ of your amp to balance it out. So once again, 0 drive, 10 balance/level, turn gain on your head down and bring it up till it sounds about right, then adjust the tone to w/e you feel.

Overdrive Never Sounded So Damn Good!

Comments about Maxon OD808 Guitar Overdrive Pedal:

I've been through several overdrive pedals and this is hands down the best. Yes, it is better than the Fulltone Fulldrive 2, the Boss SD-1, Ibanez TS9, Ibanez TS9DX, and the Ibanez TS9, not to mention many others. This is obviously a Tubescreamer clone. 3 knobs which is perfect, in my opinion, for an overdrive unit. Despite the fact that it is a tubescreamer clone, its not as bright as the Ibanez tubescreamers. Currently I've the Maxon OD808 and a TS9 in my setup and the Maxon is SO much better. Its warmer, grittier, and just sounds more natural. The only reason I still have the TS9 is because I've been unable to sell it yet.I've stacked this up to several overdrives, both boutique and commercial, and this is my favorite. Its simple, reliable, and has wonderful tone. It works well as a drive boost or alone.Fantastic

    Best Over-Drive Pedal

Comments about Maxon OD808 Guitar Overdrive Pedal:

I recently purchased a Maxon 'OD-9 Pro' 2 months ago after trying it against a Maxon OD-9. The Pro was more dynamic sounding. Then after 2 months it failed on me. I took it back to the store I bought it from, and all they had left were the Maxon OD-808. When I got home I couldn't believe my ears...wow, this is better sounding than the Maxon 'OD-9 Pro', and its less money. I also use a Maxon GE-601 equalizer pedal which is another great pedal. Every guitar player should have an EQ as it makes any amp come to life with great tone.A final thought with respect to the OD-808. I would instantly buy another one if anything ever happened to it.

Comments about Maxon OD808 Guitar Overdrive Pedal:

I have two of these units. I use one in front of my Mesa Dual Rectifier and the other in front of my Mesa Lonestar Special. It punches up the input and adds tightness and clarity. You can back the gain off of the amp to tighten it up then add the Maxon to get the lost sustain back. It's not much when played by itself, but in front of a high gain amp, its great.

Comments about Maxon OD808 Guitar Overdrive Pedal:

I have used a Digitech Bad Monkey for years in front of the Roadster to tighten it up and add saturation. It did a pretty good job but was I never quite satisfied with my boosted tone. It was also a bit on the noisy side and a little muddy. I recently tried a Mooer Pure Boost which is a compact clone of an RC Booster but that was not a good complement to the Mesa at all. After a bit of research I settled on trying the Maxon OD808 and could not be more pleased. Most people crank the Balance, leave the Gain at zero and the Tone to taste. I found that it worked great on all 4 channels of the Roadster with the Balance set to just above unity gain and the Gain off and Tone at noon. Adds saturation and a nice mid bump to my crunch and lead channels and drives my clean channel into a fantastic light crunch. Unless I want a pristine clean sound I never turn the Maxon off. I highly recommend this pedal to anyone using a Mesa in the Rectifier line.

Comments about Maxon OD808 Guitar Overdrive Pedal:

It's the perfect compliment to my DSL40c. I love the way this pedal tightens up the bass and adds more gain. I've tried the Wylde overdrive, Badmonkey and Boss Super overdrive and the OD808 blows them all away. It's a little more expensive than most OD pedals, but worth the price. If you play heavy metal and are looking for a pedal to give you that extra push on your tube amp, go with the Maxon OD8080, it won't let you down.

Comments about Maxon OD808 Guitar Overdrive Pedal:

Great OD pedal! It's a tube screamer, but way better than the others. This one doesn't sound boxy, yet still retains all the vital mids you need to cut through a mix. It has a nice low end, just a great sounding OD. I use it in front of a dirty amp and it works amazingly well. It plays nice with other pedals. Not too compressed. Not a ton of gain but I wasn't looking for that.

This Maxon 808 is definately my favorite low/mid gain tube screamer.

So easy to use, the sound is absolutely awesome...provides the perfect amount of overdrive to push my Marshall Joe Satriani head into a wonderful smooth, creamy sound.

Yes, this is a great sounding pedal and sounds great with any kind of guitar and in a wide variety of situations and applications. Unlike a lot of other overdrives this one won't bury the sound of your guitar, all the tonal characteristcs will remain intact. Need overdrive? You won't go wrong with this one.

Ok, if you are a metal guy and you are reading these reviews chances are up until now it's not sounding to good for you. Well that's just not true. This is a great pedal if you play modern metal. Sure, alone it just gives you a classic bluesy sound, but run through some serious distortion from an amp or even another stomp box. (I use it with a Digitech Weapon) If you don't believe that it will improve your overall tone than just try it out. A lot of the best metal bands in the world use this to enhance their tone such as: As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, and Shadows Fall just to name a few. Only one thing it is a good idea to purchase a Boss NS-2 noise surpressor because face it crazy distortion causes unwanted noise. If you love metal "Getcha Pull."

I have played thru various Ibanez Tubescreamer pedals (TS9 to TS10), and this Maxon pedal is far superior. Not as harsh in the mid-range, with a well-defined crunch that sounds great thru any amp (even a solid-state Marshall). Adds some nice grit to my Fender Twin, and gives me plenty of "OOMPH" thru my Mesa Boogie. Ibanez used to get this pedal from Maxon to market their Tubescreamer line of products, buy the Maxon, you can't go wrong!

Comments about Maxon OD808 Guitar Overdrive Pedal:

Played with a American strat through a twin reverb and the sound was just crushed and splashy - like I was playing through a bad solid state amp. Way way wrong. I returned it. I was looking for that fat warm overdriven tone, but this was thin (or muffled) and just cheap sounding. Gave it two stars because - a. it's pretty solid construction wise and b. if you crank up the drive all the way I guess it could work for a more metal sound, maybe. The best I could do is put the "balance" at 12 to 3 o'clock and keep the drive all the way down and mess with the "tone" knob to dial in something approximating a tube screamer sound, but boy oh boy is this not the right pedal for that. I'm surprised that so many reviews are so glowing of its tone. My beautiful amp has more headroom than most and it sounded like I was driving my old Peavy 10 watt from jr high. Switch off the pedal and it's lovely, switch it back on and it's awful. Maybe I got a defective one? Anyway, I'm spending the extra 40 bones and getting a ts808. Beware some of these reviews, man!

Woah! That was the 1st word out of my mouth. It's that good; I own the Ibanez TS808RI & while it's a good pedal, it's lacking.

Best OD for a dual rectifier. Saturates nicely and palm mutes sound big.
