This unit virtually launched the phase craze.

The MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal gives you classic phasing with variable speed control. Add shimmer to lead passages or jet-plane resonance to muted strumming. Not just for guitars; it works well with bass, keyboards, and even vocals. Vary the speed from a subtle, long cycle to a fast, watery warble with endless vintage vibrations in between. The MXR M-101 is powered by single 9V battery or Dunlop ECB-003 AC Adapter

Features

  • 2-3/8"W x 4-3/8"H x 1-1/4"D

There's no better unit for classic phase effects. Order it this very moment--just put it in the cart!

MXR really lived up to its name on this one. All the MXR products I own are awesome. They hardly ever break (mostly because they're made of the hardest metal you'll ever find), they're simple to use, and they give you exactly what you were looking for in the first place. I'm one of those guys who really doesn't give if there's a volume knob on the pedal itself. Many times, a pedal volume knob just distorts the sound into a scratchy feedback mess, that sounds like you just hooked up 5 distortion pedals to one amp. My amp has enough volume as it is, and if you play in a band, you definitely don't want to blast your sound. Also, on some effects pedals, the feature knobs are just a bunch of wasted space and "mullah" because you can't even hear the difference. The phase 90 solves all these problems by only having one "speed" knob. It controls how fast your sound phases. It sounds great, but really digital. There's also a phase 90 offered with script letters. Supposedly, the sound is a little bit different, and sounds more classic, like when Eddie Van Halen used to use these things. By the way, I would not recommend the Eddie Van Halen version phase 90. I've played it before and it's like MXR tried a little bit too hard and got a completely different sound, plus it looks corny up on stage if you're not Edward. Anyway, the phase 90 is great overall. MXR really does a good job.

I love this pedal. The only reason why it gets a 5 for overall rating is because of an issue that this pedal has. I bought one of these a month ago and thought something was wrong with it so I sold it and bought another one about 2 weeks ago and it still has the same problem. If you use this pedal in a clean tone with Humbuckers it sounds distorted. If you run the pedal through overdirve or fuzz it sounds fantastic. The only way to get this pedal to sound good in a clean channel is to use Single Coil Pickups. Thankfully my guitar has Coil-Splitting so I waws unable to avoid the distortion. After doing some reserch I found out that this re-issue has a Low Input Threshold and because of that if you use Humbuckers the pedal sounds distorted. So beware of this if you are planning on purchasing this pedal and you only have humbuckers. But other than that flaw, I love this pedal. Sounds very organic and rich.
Only one knob. You only need one knob, thats the beauty of this pedal. It adjusts the speed only. This pedal does not need any other knobs, it is that easy.
I don't think that regular use as a studio musician or giging musician will break this pedal unless you abuse it. Built like a tank.
it is a great deal considering Boss pedals are more and they are not analog like this pedal it.

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

The Phase 90 is a classic, plain and simple. I use mine on it's own, with distortion, with reverb, with chorus, everything. It is a very versatile pedal with excellent sound that mixes well with other effects. It is also durable. The thing feels like it was carved out of stone. I also love the simplicity of effects. 1 knob, that's all you need if you know what you're doing. I would suggest this pedal to anybody from pros to novices.

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

Solid design, and very easy to use. Its extremely versatile in that you can go from a very subtle phase to flying through outer space with the turn of 1 knob. EVH was on to something when he added this back in the 80s!!

MXR Phase 90

By CreepingSeth

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

I'd suggest a "classic script" version over this one, especially if you use high gain or active pickups. The "classic script" phase shifter pedals from MXR sound a lot smoother. It can sound harsh at times depending on where you put it in your signal chain and also can add extra distortion to your signal, which my I run it through it through my loop.
Not much
It's built like a tank.
IMO you're not getting much for the price.

Beware of your Clean Tone

Great all around phaser sound.

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

Great for any style music, easy to use with only one knob to adjust. Just wish MXR would come up with a phaser that includes a tap tempo function. Now that would be really useful! Also, mine pops when I hit the bypass switch. which is why I gave it this rating.

Phase 90

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

Simply put the good old standard. I've tried others even more expensive and this one is the best. Looking for a quality phaser look no further.
Does what it's supposed to do.
Wonderful pedal for the price
Can't beat the price.

You gotta have one of these!

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

This thing is cool if you don't try to go overboard. Keep it set around 8-10 o'clock for some nice effects. I own several MXR pedals & have NEVER had any problems (of course I'm not out touring anymore) Buy it, you'll like it!
More knobs maybe????

Stopped working

By Eric Fulmer

from New York City

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

After owning this pedal for about a year, it stopped working, just sucking tone and lowering my volume when it was turned on. It was a good pedal before that, but I can't in good conscience say that something that stops working after a year of light use is a good product. Try better next time, Dunlop.

Not bad for phase pedal on a budget

By guitarjunky97

from Stuarts Draft, VA

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

I just recently purchased this pedal while it was on sale for 56 bucks and its a nice pedal. Well built and will outlast anything else, the phase knob glows in the dark which is nice in a dark room. It doesnt have a ton of features but it works and you can get a lot of different sounds with just one knob. I also would recoomend getting a 9 volt adaptor or it will eat batteries like there is no tomorrow.
