Great little yellow box. The two knobs allow for a range of tonal versatility mix that with the control knobs on your guitar and you get everything from a little dirt for jazz and blues to full on crunch for classic rock and hard rock. Maybe not modern metal "scooped" tones but it has plenty of growl.

Keep in mind that it works ok over a clean channel, but if you do that it will still lack a little bite. Put it over a dirty channel and the tones you get out of this thing are incredible. Again not great for more modern metal chugging but for classic rock, heavy rock and lead tones I am very pleased. It doesn't do everything but it does what it is intended to do very well.

It does have some downside, it is very limited with what it can do and can get a little noisy when it is cranked all the way up but you didn't want quiet now did you?

I thought that this pedal would be just what I'd been looking for, but that was not the case. My guitar tech told me not to buy because it was not crunchy enough for the music that I play, and now I know why he said that. Yes, Randy Rhoads played with this, but that was because the Marshalls in that era were lacking distortion and he used this pedal to sort of boost the amp's distortion. So if you need a good distortion for any type of Metal, this one just "don't cut the mustard".

Great Growl

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

I used to use this pedal all thru the '70s. It was perfect for that sustaining growl we were all going for. I used it on my '69 Strat thru my old tube powered Sunn Septre, which did not have a lot of overdrive. The Distortion Plus fixed that. With the volume set wide open and the distortion set at 2 o'clock, I got perfect tone and sustain for soloing with my pick-ups wide open.It also picked up harmonics extremely well. For rhythm I would just back the guitar volume down and/or palm my strings. With this set up I played stages in small clubs, or fully miked in front of 100,000 people! I used the same set up for recording.

I LOVE IT

By Tyler Youtsey

from North California

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

It doesn't take away from your tone, it adds to it. I love how it's easy to use. The distortion is not overbearing like most distortion pedals out there today. Something I always hated about most distortion pedals is how they distorted the high strings on the guitar. The Distortion + does not distort them, but rather gives them a more 'crystalline' sound. It sounds shiny and beautiful. That's the only way I can describe it. And on the lower 3 strings it added the perfect amount of distortion and crunch. I love this pedal.
I love this pedal. It was exactly what I wanted out of a distortion pedal. GREAT tone. I love how it is simple to use too.

Real deal

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

When I lost my original D+ I tried several pedals from the local shops. All worked to create fuzzy grind but all seemed to color my tube amps. If your into high fidelity or a tone freak, this pedal may give a softer, more open distortion that leaves the tube tone intact. If you want chainsaw or heavy metal distortion, this pedal may be a little light for you. I love the lighter touch. I add just a hint of grit and turn the pedal down just below the amp volume. Grinding, singing chords dampened slightly with the distortion on, turn it off for clear loud leads.... WORKS!
Limited widgets and gee gaws, just killer tone.
Rock solid and dependable
I've used plenty of fuzz during my time. I picked this up to replace an original from the 70s I had trashed. I was really happy to find the cost so close to what I paid 3 decades ago.

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

My dad bought this distortion box in the 70s and now I use it. I've never had a problem with it except for a couple times when it was picking up the radio. This box is simple, it may not have all the bells and whistles, but if you want a great distortion box for the best value this is it. The sound is nothing but perfect, naturel, solid distortion.

MXR Dist.+ 1983 & 2013 Models Compared

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

This is a comparison between the (1983) Series 2000 model and the current Dunlop Re-release. In 1983 I bought the Dist+ after seeing it in the equipment lists of Alex Lifeson and some guy named Randy Rhoads. Upon hearing this wonderbox, I immediately traded away my previous (Ross) distortion pedal. After only thirty years, one of the pots showed signs of dying and I had to find a replacement. I considered Boss, among others, and read countless reviews. The Series 2000 was a superlative product with dual outputs; #1 was pure wet signal, #2 mixed the wet with dry signal. It had silent switching and was built like a tank. Finding a replacement promised to be a pain. I am grateful to the many reviewers of the Dunlop version who gave me the faith to buy the new model. I had to "daisy chain" the two pedals and swap back and forth to get "my sound" as the knobs on the two pedals are marked differently (Series 2000: Level/Drive, Dunlop: Output/Distortion). My efforts were successful and I marked the positions lest the knobs get bumped/moved. The Dunlop model allows for a higher level of distortion and has more gain than the Series 2000 so I am more than happy with the Dunlop version. Whether it will last thirty years remains to be seen but I wouldn't think twice about buying it again. My style is inspired by the psychedelic rock of the late 1960's and the Dist.+ gives a nice fuzzy Yardbirds sound. If you're looking for a metalhead pedal, this may not be the one for you but hey, if it was good enough for Saint Randy... (Note: Randy also used an MXR 10 Band EQ to thicken the bottom end.)

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

This pedal is really an unique mixture of Overdrive/distortion/fuzz and it is vintage ! That means that sound quality is the same level, or even higher level than fuzz face ! For me its the higher level cause fuzz in this one is very clear, strong, pick responsive. You know many dist pedals function the way, you can not hear clearly different strings when you play chords--its all just messy, blurred, muddy...But this is not the case with this pedal ! I have just show to my friend sound of this holy grail, plugged straight into Bugera V5 and played to him some fast solos and hard rock/metal riffs ! He was so impressed with the sound that his jaws simply dropped out, and dont ask me how much blissful, stoned feeling I have when play really loud but you can still hear EVERY note clear, punchy, warm and singing ! I feel Blessed and blissed with this one !!!

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

I got this pedal last week and i love it!! I use it along with my MXR M108 10-Band EQ. I have the EQ right after the D+ in my effects chain, and it adds overall presence to this distortion pedal. I love the Classic 70's-style rock sound and this pedal delivers. I have a Roland Cube 30x amp and i use the clean channel(JC Clean)with the D+ Output knob at 9:00 and the Distortion knob maxed out. Aloha!!

This pedal is GREAT! It gives you alot of fuzzy good 80's distortion. Perfect for Rhoads tone. I own a JCM 800, which didn't get screaming gain until I bought this unit! MXR is truly the best stompbox company out there!

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

This is a very functional pedal. It's a great pedal for straight distortion but is also extemely funtional. If you use a Marshall amp especially, this pedal is a great pre-amp to boost your signal. I play heavy metal and thrash metal and the functionality of this pedal can allow me to play a myriad of songs with little tinkering. And Randy Rhoads used it which automatically requires any serious guitarist to buy one.

      Awesome pedal
I bought this in 1977 and I have yet to find a better distortion pedal. The only difference between the 77 pedal and todays is the LED light.
Its very smooth and yet crunchy at the same time( not crunchy enough for metal though) but for what I play its amazing!! I also love the rubber optional knob covers.
I would recomend this for anyone looking for a good quality fuzz pedal!
      Great quality!!

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

I picked up one of these secondhand, so no complaints about value for money. Construction wise its built like a tank, so no worries there. Sounds range from a nice bluesy boost that preserves individual notes. With output maxed and distortion at about 1-2 o Clock you're in classic rock territory, with both knobs maxed you can Maiden gallop til the cows come home. Also, its grest for putting in front of an already distorted amp, in my case a Marshall MG50DFX, really gives it a boost. So yeah I'd reccommend trying this pedal.

      A Good Pedal.

      By Pvt. Parts

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

I recently purchased this pedal, and I must say that it's rather amazing. I use it with a B.C. Rich Beast, A Marshall JCM900 50-Watt High-Gain Dual Reverb amp, and a Dunlop Classic Crybaby. It can get just about any distortion that you want it to get. From a bluesy, light distortion to a heavy, high-gain assault, this pedal's tonal possibilities are nearly limitless. It's definately the pedal to buy if you want to play with some bite to your bark.

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

In all of my years of trying to find the perfect fuzz face, the dallas arbiter, the big muff, etc., this is the best one yet. Don't get me wrong the others are fine pedals but for pure tone this is the best by far. What I love about this pedal is mainly it has a saturated tone the others don't have. Here is what i do: I use a strat plugged into the mxr with a ts-808 to push the gain that much further into a marshall, i tried this with my big muff, that worked fine but this is better because the mxr has more of a clipped sound to i,t which is great for achieving that Randy Rhoads Diary of a Madman sound and you can add any effect to it as well. Now a word to the wise try to have a noise gate somewhere handy to eliminat any excess string noise, especially when playing fast. this pedal rocks.

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

i used this pedal for close to a year on stage for my main distortion and it worked great. I had no problems with it at all. it has a semi creamy 70s crunch to it but go to a more warm blues tone also. I would reccomend to it anybody looking for a nice overdrive for blues to mild rock distortion.

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

Its a great value for the price - made like a tank. However it just doesnt cut it in the sound/tone department. Its fairly noisy and the distortion is that great sounding in my opinion. The only use would be with a tube amp (which I have Marshall) however a tube screamer is a much better choice.

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

The most perfect thing about this pedal is the fact that it's simple: two knobs. Not only does this make it easy for quick, live adjustment, but it also provides a more clear distortion with less static. The more gizmos and gadgets on a pedal, the more difficulty you'll have finding a good sound. Sure, with more complicated pedals you have more sound options, but less options with better quality is the better deal in my opinion. I run this bad boy through a Fender DeVille amp and '72 Telecaster Deluxe. With this setup I'm able to obtain a variety of sounds. With high output, low gain I can get a warm, low-raspy distortion good for Alt-Country tunes. High output, medium gain is perfect for classic rock and indie, and high gain, well... it screams metal. And lastly, I want to bring up the fact that this thing is a rock. I've tossed, dropped, and stomped the mess out of this thing and it's still running as hard and as well as it did the day it left it's box.If you're like me (i.e. on a budget and particular about quality), buy this pedal. You won't be disappointed.

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

this is a good distortion pedal. great amount of drive to it. absence of tone shaping may be irritating to some but that's why your guitar has a tone knob(or two). severely overpriced though for what little it does have. just for fun, i tried it on a bass guitar and amp at 9 o'clock gain and it actually gave it a real evil, dirty sound. i know some find that weird to do but i enjoy just sitting down and experimenting for hours with stuff like that. probably why i now play with such an 80's underground/alter. sound(meat puppets, the vaselines, sonic youth, etc.)

I bought my original one back in '74 and haven't ever played a better effect. Back in the 70's I played my SG through it and it would pick up Canadian radio late at night in Rhode Island. Funniest thing was when I was playing at a club the police radio would come through my amp and everyone would know what was going down. Nice memories of a bigone era.
