OVERVIEW

Analog pedal with time-tested tone and flexible settings in an amazingly compact package.

The MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay Pedal features a completely analog audio path for the ultimate in rich, warm delay--made possible only by old-school bucket brigade technology. This design boasts an amazing 600ms of delay time with optional modulation via a top-mounted switch and a simple, three-knob layout that controls Delay time, Mix (dry/wet blend), and Regen (delay repeats)--all in a pedal no bigger than a Phase 90. In addition, the M169 pedal has two internal trim pots that offer user-adjustable width and rate control of the modulation for even more tonal options. The Carbon Copy effect pedal will take you from crisp "bathroom" slap echoes to epic, Gilmour-esque delays with a twist of a knob. True hard-wire bypass, single 9-volt operation, and stage-ready blue LEDs round out the package.

Right around the time that this pedal first came out, I heard a local guitarist using it at a show. We started talking about it and from what I heard, it was enough to convince me that I had to try it. I've messed around with several Digital Delays over the years and the sound of the Analog Delay just won me over immediately. Once this pedal made it onto my board, it's never came off, except to re-position it. I even went to the store with my guitar and tried out the Carbon Copy against all the other Analog Delays that the store had available. This thing still won me over.

I play a variety of Strats through a Tweed Fender Bassman. I'm not huge on using a lot of effects to alter my sound. I enjoy playing with a clean or slightly overdriven tone with the use of some pedals to color my tone slightly. The only drawback I see from the Carbon Copy is it not having the option of reverse delay, which can be a very useful effect from time to time, especially in solos.

This pedal is extremely easy to use, very reliable, and affordable. The modulation button is an awesome function that, with the proper adjustments, adds much more depth to the overall sound.
The only reason this doesn't get a full 10 is because to me a full 10 rating on a delay would be for one that included reverse delay. There are 2 tweakable adjustments on the inside of the pedal for the modulation button. Might be a bad thing to some that it's necessary to open the pedal to make these adjustments but I'm sure for most players it won't be a problem. The 2 adjustments are more of a set and forget feature however they are extremely useful!
MXR builds great pedals that last and take a beating.
Compared to the higher price of some other pedals, especially Analog, the Carbon Copy holds it's own with a lot of delay pedals out there. Even though there are more expensive Delay pedals that sound better, there are also quite a few that are more than double the price that don't touch this one in terms of sound quality.

Okay, bought this in summer '08 when the second run came out and it was backordered. Was looking forward to this affordable analog delay as my first. Previously I used a Boss DD-6 with high cut mod. This is a decent delay pedal. I thought there could be more range in the mix knob. Mine was hard to dial in the right amount. Never used above 9 or 10 O'clock when soloing over something. Mod button didn't do much. It was true bypass and passed signal with no power. I may or may not have still been using this if it hadn't died. After 2 or 3 months I think, it stopped passing signal when engaged. I had registered it, so I sent it back with paperwork. I had it back in 3 weeks. They repaired it and I had to pay shipping to Dunlop. If it's helpful to anyone troubleshooting theirs, Dunlop said "replaced Q10 transistor". It seemed to sound better when I got it back, maybe they adjusted it. I don't remember if there are trimpots besides the mod trim. Maybe just my imagination. Anyways, it probably would have been fine, but I decided to sell it because I didn't trust it. I now have a real nice analog delay I built myself. It sounds better than the MXR. The M169 may be a good pedal for the price, but I'd buy it new and fill out the warranty card. I also wouldn't discourage anyone from getting a digital delay. There are probably as good if not better deals out there among the many delays available. Haven't tried it but like the BBE two timer. Maybe boss DD-7. Shop around.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

First and foremost, you have to put this pedal through your effects loop. I never used a loop and was tempted to get rid of this pedal after running in front of my amp. After I plugged through the loop, this pedal is absolutely gorgeous. I have used Boss pedals and some other cheap delays, and this pedal takes the cake. I am still curious about the line 6 delay, but this sounds so great. I wanted simple and this is it. I read some forums on settings, and starting out everything at 12 and then pulling the resonance back almost to nothing was the key. This is not a looper pedal, but can provide some long delay. I use for that classic delay for leads and it literally makes me crave it while I'm at work.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

If you're looking for a warm sounding, reasonably priced Analog delay, look no further. The MXR delay sounds and work as advertised. I only have two cons. First one: the mod controls are located inside where you have to unscrew 4 screws to access it. So make sure you like the sound before closing it up. The next one seems kinda dumb but that led is so bright that one small glance and I'm nearly blind for a second. Easy to dim by placing some clear tape over it. Overall an awesome quality delay. Great for some Gilmour sounds.

Adds depth to your tone, great slap backs etc. Or turn up the delay , wet mix, and regen and get some great melodic tunes.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

This delay has replaced my DL4. It is a very warm and natural sounding pedal. The delay adjustments can achieve subtlety to insanity so it is versatile and fun to play with. I play Gibsons through and Orange Rockerverb 100 and I run all pedals into the amp, no fx loop for me and this delay is happy to do so. If you are looking for a pristine , super crisp delay, this may not be the one for you.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this pedal several years ago and can't imagine gigging without it! It has become pretty integral to my clean sound, and if it were lost or stole I would almost certainly replace it with another. After about 3 years the input jack wasn't working anymore. I called MXR and they offered to repair it free of charge, I only had to pay shipping to them. They said they couldn't duplicate the issue, but replaced the internal components anyway. Awesome customer service! Since then I haven't had any problems.

I actually run this pedal on 18v, which makes the repeats louder and you have more time before it goes into oscillation. I have it set to a fairly short delay, with high feedback, and it adds a nice bottom layer to my clean tone.

I would absolutely recommend this pedal to a friend!
