OVERVIEW

Analog pedal with time-tested tone and flexible settings in an amazingly compact package.

The MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay Pedal features a completely analog audio path for the ultimate in rich, warm delay--made possible only by old-school bucket brigade technology. This design boasts an amazing 600ms of delay time with optional modulation via a top-mounted switch and a simple, three-knob layout that controls Delay time, Mix (dry/wet blend), and Regen (delay repeats)--all in a pedal no bigger than a Phase 90. In addition, the M169 pedal has two internal trim pots that offer user-adjustable width and rate control of the modulation for even more tonal options. The Carbon Copy effect pedal will take you from crisp "bathroom" slap echoes to epic, Gilmour-esque delays with a twist of a knob. True hard-wire bypass, single 9-volt operation, and stage-ready blue LEDs round out the package.

Right around the time that this pedal first came out, I heard a local guitarist using it at a show. We started talking about it and from what I heard, it was enough to convince me that I had to try it. I've messed around with several Digital Delays over the years and the sound of the Analog Delay just won me over immediately. Once this pedal made it onto my board, it's never came off, except to re-position it. I even went to the store with my guitar and tried out the Carbon Copy against all the other Analog Delays that the store had available. This thing still won me over.

I play a variety of Strats through a Tweed Fender Bassman. I'm not huge on using a lot of effects to alter my sound. I enjoy playing with a clean or slightly overdriven tone with the use of some pedals to color my tone slightly. The only drawback I see from the Carbon Copy is it not having the option of reverse delay, which can be a very useful effect from time to time, especially in solos.

This pedal is extremely easy to use, very reliable, and affordable. The modulation button is an awesome function that, with the proper adjustments, adds much more depth to the overall sound.
The only reason this doesn't get a full 10 is because to me a full 10 rating on a delay would be for one that included reverse delay. There are 2 tweakable adjustments on the inside of the pedal for the modulation button. Might be a bad thing to some that it's necessary to open the pedal to make these adjustments but I'm sure for most players it won't be a problem. The 2 adjustments are more of a set and forget feature however they are extremely useful!
MXR builds great pedals that last and take a beating.
Compared to the higher price of some other pedals, especially Analog, the Carbon Copy holds it's own with a lot of delay pedals out there. Even though there are more expensive Delay pedals that sound better, there are also quite a few that are more than double the price that don't touch this one in terms of sound quality.

Okay, bought this in summer '08 when the second run came out and it was backordered. Was looking forward to this affordable analog delay as my first. Previously I used a Boss DD-6 with high cut mod. This is a decent delay pedal. I thought there could be more range in the mix knob. Mine was hard to dial in the right amount. Never used above 9 or 10 O'clock when soloing over something. Mod button didn't do much. It was true bypass and passed signal with no power. I may or may not have still been using this if it hadn't died. After 2 or 3 months I think, it stopped passing signal when engaged. I had registered it, so I sent it back with paperwork. I had it back in 3 weeks. They repaired it and I had to pay shipping to Dunlop. If it's helpful to anyone troubleshooting theirs, Dunlop said "replaced Q10 transistor". It seemed to sound better when I got it back, maybe they adjusted it. I don't remember if there are trimpots besides the mod trim. Maybe just my imagination. Anyways, it probably would have been fine, but I decided to sell it because I didn't trust it. I now have a real nice analog delay I built myself. It sounds better than the MXR. The M169 may be a good pedal for the price, but I'd buy it new and fill out the warranty card. I also wouldn't discourage anyone from getting a digital delay. There are probably as good if not better deals out there among the many delays available. Haven't tried it but like the BBE two timer. Maybe boss DD-7. Shop around.

Simply a great sounding pedal, tons of versetility, compact, and the blue light looks really cool in the dark. Overall a great purchase and an indespensible part of my rig. Make sure to put it in the effects loop because t doesnt sound good in the front unless the signal is clean.

      Through the Past Darkly

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

It is a darker delay, for sure. Warm comes to mind as well. Lush because, set to high mix and regen, you will note there is a folding over, a blendage of the repeats that does not obscure your next musical gesture, the one that is surely going to finally make it all happen for you. Who would want a delay pedal that inhibits growth? We don't want to live in the past or marry the moment; we do however want to live in the unobtrusive, mulched presence of the enriching past, informed but not tyrannized by its echoes. That is why we have chosen this lovely pedal.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

Sounds good in an effects loop. Less than mediocre going into the front. If your distortion has a fair amount of compression, it won't sound that good. On a clean channel, it sounds very good. This is probably true of any analog delay.

Comments about M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is the second MXR Carbon Copy I have on my pedal board. The first is set for a quick single slap delay with the 'mod' on for thickness and is on all the time. This second one is used for long delays with repeats for certain songs and leads. These are great 'analog' delays. Buy one... or 2.

This replaced an old DOD digital delay and sampler. I never felt great about that pedal. The mxd is nice and simple with great sound. I shouldn't have waited so long to just get it. If you're on the fence about getting this delay, just do it, get it now. I doubt you will feel like you made a mistake. Mine is almost always on.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've had this for a couple years now and it is absolutely awesome. I play a Schecter tempest custom (les paul-type sound/feel) into a Randall 120W half stack on clean (psych./indie/garage rock stuff) and often times this is the only pedal I have on. I also often pair it with a TC Spark Booster with the gain high to get a crunchy but smooth, tasty tone. I have three other MXR pedals and they are all great but this is my favorite. This thing sounds a lot better/is more useful when using the 9V adaptor IMO. When using an 18V adaptor, you get a crazy feedback loop when you strike then mute a note when the controls are a certain way (mix up + delay or reign). I get a better and more easily adjusted sound when using the 9V adaptor.

This pedal is outstanding and probably my absolute favorite!
