MXR has been on fire lately with the releases of the Carbon Copy Delay, '78 Distortion, and Modified O.D. This new MXR distortion (released in 2013 without a ton of fanfare) may quickly become known as one of their best distortion pedals offered to-date.

The key to this pedal is how hard it is to get a bad sound out of it, despite a great deal of customization. From 8:00 to 10:00 on the Distortion knob, it remains almost completely clean, reminiscent of a mild overdrive or clean boost. There are Marshall flavored tones around 12:00, and it becomes even more saturated and compressed beyond that.

Unlike other boutiques with complicated multi-knobs and mod switches, the 3-band EQ is as simple to use as an amplifier, but also incredibly versatile. You can cut the mids to make it sound mean, or boost them for a Tubescreamer-like effect.

This is an excellent new offering on a variety of classic sounds, and at this price, there is a ton of value in this simple-looking little box.

I purchased this pedal to replace an old distortion pedal with less features and an odd pedal board footprint. The M75 has a good sound, very "British" in character, throaty and deep, but beyond that sound I don't find it as versatile as some other reviewers. It's a little overly compressed and not as responsive to picking and input volume as my previous pedal. Overall not a bad effect, but it could be improved.

Comments about MXR M75 Super Badass Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I own a TON of overdrive and distortion pedals, and I've bought and returned probably at least 50. I usually know almost immediately whether I love or hate a pedal. The Super BA sounded instantly perfect.

I've owned super-expensive boutique pedals all the way down to the usual suspects. I have a Bad Cat Hot Cat 30 amp, known for it's overdrive channel. This is a $2600 amp. The Super BA's distortion sounds better. It's that good.

With all the controls at noon, it has a great ballsy, meaty, chunky sound that will cover 90% of all classic rock tones. Scoop the mids and boost the bass and treble, push the gain and you have classic metal. It even works as a boost with the gain low and volume high, but that's probably not why you'd buy his pedal (and other pedals do the low-gain stuff better anyway).

The 3-band EQ makes it extremely versatile. I may get a second just to have two completely different tones ready to go.

It sounds natural and it responds to guitar volume changes, and it's cheap. I'm not an MXR fanboy. I love the Carbon Copy, but I didn't care for the '78 BA Distortion. But the Super BA s definitely a keeper.

Comments about MXR M75 Super Badass Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've been playing a very long time. I build pedals and amps, too. These days, I'm using Fender silver face amps for their clean tone and using overdrive pedals for different types of distortion. This MXR Super Bad*ss pedal would be perfect for someone trying to emulate a Soldano amp. Cutting the mids on this pedal seems to work the best and is probably what this pedal was designed for. It doesn't seem to like the slightly rounded-off high end like the MXR Distortion III or the MXR Classic Distortion does.
I've been trying to get away from the sizzly highs that some Marshall amps have, especially when using Celestion 70-watt speakers. This pedal is just the opposite of what I want these days. Too sizzly in the high end. I will say this, though: This pedal has way more gain available than nearly any distortion pedal I've ever seen. And, lower settings of the gain still work well, unlike some pedals where you lower the gain and the pedal just sounds wimpy. The MXR Super Bad*ss Distortion is all about the high-gain modded amp sound. If I still lived in Hollywood and this was 1985, this would be perfect. It's just not where I'm going at this point. I want to state for the record, though, that I have really good ears and I've been playing guitar and working on this stuff for a very long time. Younger folks might plug into this pedal and go, "Yeah, baby!".

Comments about MXR M75 Super Badass Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This unit is a lead Guitarists dream. Responds well to pick attack and retains note definition on the lower strings. When combined with a good overdrive, it sustains into a feedback of the note you are holding. However, it is also very flexible as it can imitate most any distortion pedal made. Well worth the price and a permanent part of my pedal board.

Comments about MXR M75 Super Badass Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

OK, as with any effect there are always some sweet spots. But this pedal has more then one. It is quite versatile. I have been going through several pedals looking for a certain elusive sound and this one has come the closest. Worthy of a spot on any pedal board. Hard to match the value for the cost.

Comments about MXR M75 Super Badass Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I REALLY love the versatility of this pedal. It sounds great by itself or as in my case with another overdrive (Boss SD-1). I'm kind of using the MXR as kind of a faux preamp with the gain pretty low and running my SD-1 in front of it. I really love the "pick attack" I get with the SD-1 but it sounds wimpy unless you can get the amp "cooking" which gets me the stink eye from the singers in the band. So now I'm able to run my amp hot and use the MXR to dial down the volume without losing warmth and tone...

Probably not the intended use for this pedal but it's made my life easier...and quieter...

Comments about MXR M75 Super Badass Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This was not my first choice. I was looking at another MXR distortion pedal but the Musicians Friend sale rep was very knowledgable about the new product and on his recommendation, I took a chance. I'm glad I did. This pedal does everything MXR says it will do. It holds its own at both performance and bed room levels. Great for recording and playing live.

          Very happy with the pedal.

Comments about MXR M75 Super Badass Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

A distortion pedal with a mid knob! What a concept!
I have tried Boss, Hardwire, and Seymour Duncan distortion pedals...only the SD Lava Box is usable to my ears. The M75 can do low-gain to High-gain from classic rock to metal, all with an over-drive-like smoothness to it, especially compared to the scratchiness of other pedals by companies noted above. RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MID KNOB! Versatility in this distortion pedal comes from, not only its smoothness, but also from the tweaking of the mids which makes it usable beyond just Metal. It CAN be a bit noisy on some eq settings when notes aren't being played, but that is a minor complaint. Great for soloing, low-gain for rhythm parts mmm...mmm...good.
