OVERVIEW

A 120W analog, solid-state, two channel amp that's at home at rehearsal and on stage.

The Orange Crush CR120 is a 120W solid-state amp head that offers the tonal clarity and definition players adore in an Orange amplifier. The Crush CR120 amp is part of the Crush range, marking Orange's first foray into the world of high power, solid-state amplifiers. Orange have spent years creating a solid-state amp they could be proud of.

The Orange team wanted to keep these amp simple. The dirty channel uses a circuit based on four stages of gain and a three-band EQ, which provides the player with a wide pallet of over-driven and distorted sounds. The clean channel is based on a two-stage, two-band EQ design that gives the player a clean but warm sound, which, when cranked, begins to break up.

These amps have a transparent effects loop, allowing you to plug in your favorite pedals. It also contains a digital reverb that provides a natural-sounding spring, hall or plate reverb.

Comments about Orange Amplifiers Crush Pro CR120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

    Hi! BedRock here…
I'm going to examine this amp from a different angle. I'm an electronic guitarist. My original music is a combination of classic rock and electronic/ambient. I have a large pedalboard and a multi-fx device to go in the effects loop. I also play a guitar synth. I've had four tube amplifiers and, though they were good, I couldn't get them to sound good with the effects. A tube amp has too much of its own character and mangles my pedals. I need an amp that sounds warm while also having an otherwise even frequency response. I've played on a lot of old Peavey SS amps and what they lack in clarity and dynamic range they put back in warmth.
I my search, this was the only head to survive the consumer reviews that compared the CR120H to it's Fender, Marshall and Pod6 counterparts. I reasoned that a company known for its boutique tube amps wouldn't put their coat of arms on a mediocre product. I was correct.
Unlike most guitarists, I was more concerned with the clean channel than the crunch channel. No mid control? Just turn up the bass and treble to balance it. The clean channel has plenty of shimmer and "jangle" when you turn the treble up. Just what a Rick 12 needs. Turn it down and the EQ is both level and clear, so my pedals at the front end sound just as they're supposed to.
My multi-fx unit connected to the effects loop works very well. Tip: If you use a multi-fx and your unit has amp modeling, you might have to have an amp model selected to get any volume or tone at all. If you choose a neutral-sounding one, like a Fender Twin or the manufacturer's clean amp, the result will sound just like the CR120H by itself. Adjust the tone controls of the model to sound as neutral as possible.
The crunch channel was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting to get much from it besides modern high-gain shred. I could get that AND a nice smooth 70's Marshall. For me, the amp sounds best with the tone controls around 12:00. Any variation is due to my guitar.

I was looking for a solid state for reliability and am blown away at how amazing this thing sounds. I might go back to tubes some day, but this thing does everything I need. It didn't take my distortion pedals very well, but I was able to dial in the tone I wanted on the dirty channel so that's not a problem at all. All of my other pedals sound amazing through the clean channel, which is stunning by the way. Highly recommended.

Comments about Orange Amplifiers Crush Pro CR120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

This is my second review. This time Im comparing it directly my recently acquired RV50C.

As I said before, the CR120 is an amazing head. If anything, I like the amp even more. The one change I would make to my previous review is the clean channel is much more than adequate. It actually is very good.

To start, the sound of the rockerverb is bigger and more dynamic than the CR120. But, I did a thorough study and found I could get to CR120 to sound very similar to the RV50.

The RV50C has two Vintage 30s. I hooked the CR120 to a 1x12 with an EVH Greenback and a 4x12 with Celestion Greenbacks. I started with the 1x12 which is rated for only 20W. I set both amps to same volume (not bedroom...more practice level) and played through an AB switch. I used a Gibson Les Paul Std.

I set the tone of the RV to my favorite hi gain setting and was able to tweak the EQ on the CR120 to get pretty darn close. I most certainly got in the Orange Rockerverb range. The CR120 is a true tone machine. I then tested the clean side. Again I was able to get close though tube amps audio is always more organic. The tube reverb on the RV is much better than the digital reverb on the CR ( which is more than adequate).

I had less success with the 4x12 with greenbacks though I again was able to achieve vintage Orange tones. I recommend you pair this head with an orange cab with Vintage 30s. The amp is definitely voiced to their cabs and Vintage 30s. I think Orange 2x12 would be enough and would sound great. Note- I've never used a Voice of the World speaker so no comment the matching 4x12 Orange recommends.

In conclusion, the CR120H is a great piece of kit that gets you for sure into vintage Orange tones! You will certainly get in the Rockerverb neighborhood especially with an orange cab with V30s. I'm actually surprised Orange made this amp so good. Sure the RV is awesome and was the tones I was trying to match. The CR120 gets you about 80 % there on the dirty side and maybe 70% there on the clean channel. What Orange did is polar opposite of what Marshall does. The Marshall MG line is light years from their more expensive tube amps. I've playedthe MGCFX100H significantly and it is not at all in the neighborhood of a JVM or even their imported DSL line. Orange, and good on them, made a solid state amp that has most of the MOJO of their flag ship amp.

So, if you want Orange Rockerverb but don't have the budget, the CR120 gets you pretty close.

Again, Great Job Orange Amplification !! I can't recommend this amp enough for the budget minded guitarist who wants to enjoy that Orange sound.

Comments about Orange Amplifiers Crush Pro CR120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

This amp is a great head for the money by far. The thing that amazed me was the clean channel it is amazing the first time i plugged into it and still seems to amaze me. The dirty channel is good as well, although it does lack fully what a tube amp might sound like it does a great job emulating the tube sound. The dirty channel also has plenty of gain so there is no lack there. This is not a tube amp there for it wont sound exactly like a tube amp. If your in the market to buy a head at a budget price that is versatile this is it. I must warn you though if your not used to hearing oranges sound as soon as you do you wont go back to another sound again. I love the Marshall and Mesa Boogie sound but after playing orange I think its won my vote by far. There is just something different and unique about orange that you cant get out of other amps. My advice would be to go play one at your music store and see if you like it. I love this head every time i plug into it.

Comments about Orange Amplifiers Crush Pro CR120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

This is a crazy good solid state amp. I give it 5 stars because it is probably the best solid state old school amp out there. There is a lot to like about this amp. The YouTube reviews heaping praise on this amp are accurate. It's a two channel amp with an adequate clean channel. The clean channel is nothing special but it is good enough for those who primarily dial in hi gain. The clean channel will get dirty the more juice you give it so the headroom does have limits. Where this amp shines big time and earns its 5 stars is on the dirty side. Shockingly good at low and moderate volumes. Pure Orange tone. Very Rockerverb. This amp really thrives with Vintage 30s and Greenbacks. No problem dialing in classic British tones ala AC/DC, Purple, Zep, Sabbath, etc or 80s Hairband tones. The three digital types of reverb are pretty good. The amp also looks great and is very well built. Great tube like tones with out the maintenance of tubes is awesome. This amp would be a great backup to a Orange tube head, would be ideal for band practice ( leave your expensive valve amp at home) , and would be a great amp for those weary of the expense of tube amps. Overall well done!

Nothing is perfect: As good as this amp is, it is not perfect. This amp is not a Rockerverb. As you dial in more volume the tone of this amp basically hits a wall and begins to sound thinner. I'm talking high gig level volumes so for normal everyday use this issue is less important. Not bad but a tube amp like a Rockerverb gets warmer and hotter the more juice you give it and the tone screams when the tubes warm up. The CR120's sweet spot is at moderate volume where it is very good. Also, the amp does take pedals well front side but I did notice the effects loop sucks up some tone. It was noticeable. Lastly, when you add the footswitch you must buy separately, this does get pricey as there are some hi power tube amps near this price point which have better performance.

If you want a 100W Orange amp this thing is a tremendous value. This amp has enough power to gig with though it sounds best at moderate volumes. If you are tired of tube amps this is a great choice and is much better than Marshall's MG line or modeling amps like Line 6. Also, if you need a good backup amp to your expensive tube amp or a good practice amp for rehearsals this amp delivers. But, if you are looking for well built head for gigs as your main rig I suuggest you consider Made in USA Carvin V3M or the X100 reissue. They are valve amps and they exceed the performance of this amp all around. When you factor in the price for the foot switch (included with Carvin) the price points are similar. Still, I like the Orange tone and I am impressed with the CR120 and sometimes it's just easier to grab the solid state amp and go without worrying about the tubes.

Comments about Orange Amplifiers Crush Pro CR120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

Pretty sweet little amp. I needed an amp to gig with, and I had very limited funds, I could not be happier. I quit playing guitar in bands for a while, sold a Mesa Tremoverb (so i know good amps) that was just too much for home jamming. I bought a line 6 spider 3 from a friend at first, and it was total junk. Sold it for the Orange. For the price, you can't beat the power and tone. The Marshall Mg series is in the same price range, and it is junk as well.

I run the orange with a marshall 1960 lead cab (celestion gt75's?) playing a prs ce 24, and it sounds killer. Clean is pretty chimey, but most of all, just a warm, fat tone. Breaks up pretty convincingly for a solid state amp. Only gripe is clean channel only has treble and bass eq. I can still get good tones, but I would love a mid. Clean sounds great with the 3 types of reverb, or my delay pedal.

Dirty channel has that creamy orange tone a' la rockerverb. Very thick tone as well. Pretty much any dirty tone is available, from a nice southern rock/blues crunch, to mid scooped nu metal tones. Never harsh sounding, but can get a little fuzzy. In a band setting, it cuts through very nice.

The amp is plenty loud for live gigs, especially if you are miked up. Sounds good at bedroom levels, and obviously really good when cranked. When i play live, i have yet to turn it up more than halfway.

Does it sound like a tube amp? Kinda. It's analogue voice has a very smooth, tube like tone. It reacts almost like a tube amp as far as breaking up when turning down guitar, or cranking amp up. It doesn't have the overall sensitivity of an all tube amp, but it's pretty darn close. Now say compared with the Line 6 Spider, or Marshall Mg, it totally blows them out of the water. Definately the best solid state amp I've played, and the price is just crazy low. Seems to be built tough, and is pretty light. No footswitch is bummer. Fx loop works very well.

To add to the other reviews, I was looking for a solid state amp to replace my tube amps. Why? I didn't want the hassle of tube maintenance anymore. My understanding of this amp is that it is an all analog amp with the exception of the reverb, same design as the Rockerverb with the exection of using Op-Amps (Operational Amplifiers) instead of tubes. I'm using it with a Orange 212 cab with Celestion V30s. Pedals- Whah and OD pedals this the front a tone/delay pedals in the FX loop. Using a Setzer Gretsch, Strat Plus and a Tele Delux. Great tone? You bet.

This is a great sounding head with a unique resemblance to Orange's Rockerverb amps. I am currently running this through the Orange PPC 2x12 Jim Root Cab and it sounds amazing! The digital reverb on the amp also sounds killer, lots of gain for the metal player.

Comments about Orange Amplifiers Crush Pro CR120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

Got this amp for my birthday. Runs a pair of 4x12 cabs as easily as my 1x12. I run an EQ in the FX Loop and love the thickness it give this Solid State head.
