OVERVIEW

There's nothing "Micro" about the way this head sounds.

The Classic 20 MH Mini Head is part of Peavey's timeless Classic Series which are revered by blues, country and rock players alike. Their versatility allows them to span the tonal landscape from vintage to contemporary with ease, and the Classic 20 MH Mini Head provides that tone in a highly portable package.

The all-tube, 20-watt Classic 20 MH is powered by two EL84 power tubes and three 12AX7/ECC83 preamp tubes. It has two channels that follow the same gain structure and voicing of the Peavey Classic Series amps for pure and versatile tone. The channels share a three-band EQ, lush reverb and an effects loop. The channels, effects loop and reverb are all footswitchable.

Peavey's TSI tube monitoring alerts players of power tube status, and in the event of a necessary tube replacement, identifies which tube needs to be replaced. Rear panel features such as a Microphone Simulated Direct Interface (MSDI) with XLR output and USB out, speaker defeat switch and three-position power attenuator switch make the Classic 20 MH Mini Head perfect for studio environments.

Comments about Peavey Classic 20 Micro Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I do not own this amp head but I must say I just played one and its sounds amazing. Love the 1 watt feature and the clean sounded great. I would definitely consider this amp when in the market for a new head. Try it for sure. Too many features to ignore

Comments about Peavey Classic 20 Micro Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I bought this amp to replace my Tweed Blues Junior, which I was using mainly for practising at home and as a back-up for gigs. The things that really appealed to me about this amp were its compact size, being able to run it in 20W, 5W and 1W modes and the speaker emulator (so that if all else fails, you can plug it directly into a PA - without the need to connect a speaker!). I have previously owned a Peavey 5150 amp, so I guess there was a bit of nostalgia there too.

I should say that I only really use channel 1 of this amp, because my main amp is basically like a Fender Deluxe Reverb, so all of my higher gain sounds come from pedals. I play mostly rock and blues, the sort of music you associate with Tweed amplifiers. This amp sounds terrific - in a similar league to my hand-wired Deluxe Reverb clone head. The EQ controls give you a very large sweep of tones and reverb is great too. The modern features mentioned above make it ideal for any kind of gig - you can literally turn up with just a guitar and this head and plug straight into a PA if needed. Channel 2 is useful to have, but I'm not a huge fan of the tone - it's usable, but not really to my tastes.

As far as I'm aware, there is nothing else currently on the market to compete with this mini head. I have to give it 5 stars for the great sound, portability and incredible range of useful features (and it came with a footswitch!)

Comments about Peavey Classic 20 Micro Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Awesome clean tones similar to a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Great digital spring reverb. It's a keeper for me although I can't use the lead channel it's just too hot for my style of playing. Also it's shipped with Ruby tubes in the preamp not JJ's as listed by Peavey. Still a great amp, great tone and looks well made.

Comments about Peavey Classic 20 Micro Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Bottom line, it is a matter of taste and this is my favorite amp for cleans.
I currently also have a JSX with 6L6's, an EVH 5053, a Mesa Mark V 25, a Mesa Rectoverb mini, a Peavey 6505MH and a few others as comparison baselines.
Each amp has specific colors and that's why we have different amps and other gear.
Having said that, the color that this Amp has is wonderful for its cleans, plus you can easily combine the pre and post amp gain for different textures, sounds, and dynamics.
The dirty channel is classic rock sound with a nice tube breakup and it is really good too.
The boost option accessible from its pedal is a good added feature on top of many other great ones.
If you are a head banger, get another amp, but if you are looking for classic colored cleans, give this amp a try.

Comments about Peavey Classic 20 Micro Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Bought this primarily to run straight to a mixer/PA via the MSDI XLR out, although I also have a 1x12 for occasional use. There are a lot of other reviews talking about how lousy the MSDI out is, and I agree it's very dark. But it brightens up nicely with the treble around 7 on the amp and 6 or 7 on the mixer channel as well. Bass and mids are what you'd expect.

Also the drive channel needs the post up around 7 or more to keep the power tubes hot. Seems to really come alive.

I would buy this again without hesitation. Nothing else in the price range compares.

Comments about Peavey Classic 20 Micro Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I ordered this from a local store who is a dealer. Out of the box, this head was faulty. After 15-20 minutes of warm up, it immediately started humming loudly. It was a low end hum that wouldn't stop. I had to send it back to Peavey and get a replacement. I also ordered the one 12 ext speaker cabinet with a Celestion vintage 30 speaker to go with it. I didn't even get a chance to hear the cab or really play, because the head didn't make it that far. So, after getting the replacement head (and that one was fine, btw).. THEN.. I heard a vibration in the cab! A really annoying vibration that happened whenever I got serious bass frequencies. I took every screw off the back panel and tightened (w/ a death grip) every screw inside trying to 'lock down' anything that might've been loose and rattling. Well, that wasn't it. It was actually the basket of the speaker! So I had to get a replacement Celestion Vintage 30 speaker! How bizarre. The replacement was fine.. btw. LOL But, dang. As an aside, my Classic 30 amp also had problem that required 80.00 worth of repairs including a new tube. It was only less than a year old. I consigned it. I have mixed feelings about the overall quality of Peavey products. Once you get something fixed, it'll probably be ok for a good while. But, why should I have to jump thru so many hoops to get a consistent, good sounding product? However, at this time, my 20 watt is functioning properly ..for now. Holding my breath.

Comments about Peavey Classic 20 Micro Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I was so disappointed when I got this head. I don't know if my amp was a lemon (I bought it open box) but the sound was terrible. Not vintage not classic at all. I watched reviews online, heard it on YouTube and my peavey was not even close to the sound on those reviews. I did my research and this amp was very high rated by reviewers but I just can't agree with those reviews, mine was dull, not crunchy, not even close to a classic sound. No zeppelin no acdc no hard rock at all. Crancked up distortion and the sound becomes muddy, not even close to a real tube amp. So I don't know if my amp was a lemon, if it was because its open box gear or every peavey classic is supposed to sound the same but based on my personal experience I can not recommend this amp. The only thing I liked about this amp was the exterior, oh dear this amp is beautiful but it's a shame that the looks don't match the interior.
