OVERVIEW

Natural tone and clarity of a true bypass device with out the noise.

The Bones Twin-City footswitch from Radial Engineering is an active ABY switcher and buffer that enables you to connect any two amps and drive them simultaneously without noise, loss of gain, and without degrading your natural guitar tone. This is accomplished with Radial's highly acclaimed buffering technology and the same Drag Control load correction circuitry as used in the award-winning Radial JD7 Injector. The 'set and' forget Drag Control lets you compensate for cable signal loss and introduce the perfect amount of loading to replicate the way your guitar and amp interact.

To eliminate hum and buzz from ground loops, the Twin-City is equipped with an isolation transformer on output B. This is augmented with a ground lift switch and 180 polarity reverse switch that ensures both amplifiers play in phase while noise is reduced to an absolute minimum even when using older vintage amps that are generally more prone to noise. As a buffer, the Twin-City footswitch lowers the impedance and susceptibility to noise, making it the ideal signal driver for large stages when using long cable runs.

Like all Radial products, the Bones are constructed from heavy 14 gauge steel for greater durability and added 'stay put' when kicked around on a busy stage. For even greater durability, the Twin-City footswitch employs Radial's own EIS-Electronic Impulse Switching-for outstanding performance without the challenges of mechanical switches. Bright, easy to see LEDs deliver on-stage switching cues so you know exactly where you are at all times.

As most players employ pedal boards, the Radial Twin-City features standard 'Boss style' 9V powering that will adapt to most multi-pedal power supplies. The ultra compact design with top mounted output and DC connections allow effect pedals to be placed close together for those wishing maximum pedal board density.

FEATURES
  • Buffered ABY with Drag load correction
  • Isolated output eliminates hum and buzz
  • 180 polarity sets both amps in phase
  • Compact to fit on any pedal board
  • Standard 9 volt power supply operation

Comments about Radial Engineering Tonebone Twin-City Active ABY Switcher:

This product delivers exactly as advertised. One guitar, into two pedalboards / amps and with quiet operation. I had tried some of the cheaper types by other manufacturers and always got the humming / buzzing / popping but not with this product plus both amps are in phase, no ground loops. It costs a little more but the guts of this little box are probalby why with an isolation transformer inside for channel B and other features. It does not run on batteries because of all the internal extras but worked well with a a spare Fulltone wall wart I have here and should work ok with a regulated powered pedalboard too.The instructions are clear and setup only took about 5 min. I have a Marshall vintage modern tube amp and a less expensive Line 6 solid state amp and the two play very nicely together. This has opened up lots of ideas for me to split and/or combine sound possibilites. Note: Because it is buffered you cannot run it in reverse to connect two guitars to on amp. ( its one-way flow) Radial makes other products that can do that if you like. The drag adjustment on top is used to set the "load", just use a guitar pick works well. I looked at the passive model but I like the features n this one and LED's myself. I gave "value" a 4.5 just because it is a little pricey...but worth it not to hear buzz and hum any longer. Hope that helps

An ABY solution to amp hum and buzzing

By VintageStratMan

Comments about Radial Engineering Tonebone Twin-City Active ABY Switcher:

For those who wish to use two different amps with an ABY switching configuration, with little-to-no buzzing and humming added, the Radial Bones R800-7115 Twin City ABY Footswitch is certainly one great solution. After trying several other brand-name and one so-called "boutique" ABY switching units, this one beats them hands down, at a reasonable price for it's capabilities and quality.I am using the Radial Bones with my Vai Legacy Combo stack and my Fender Deluxe VM/Avatar combo stack. I use a Digitech RP1000 multi-effects unit in the Legacy amp loop, using only the onboard effects with my Fender rig...the Radial performs in the A, B, or Y configurations quietly and effectively. The "phase" switch on this ABY unit makes for interesting variations in the sound of both amps when they are running together at the same time.My two main guitars for this setup is my 1979 Fender Stratocaster (custom), and my Ibanez RG350DX (custom). I've been a pro touring and recording musician, vocalist, engineer, and producer for over 39 years. Although I play several instruments, my main instrument is guitar. I play Rock, Hard Rock, Pop, Soul, R&B, Fusion, Funk, Adult Contemporary, Blues, and even some Country. This setup with the Radial Bones ABY does it all very well. I highly recommend this unit.

Killer ABY Switch!!

Comments about Radial Engineering Tonebone Twin-City Active ABY Switcher:

This thing does what it says. No hum, no pops, no phase, just quiet operation. Plug and play. I use it for playing bass. I run a Peavey 6505 and Ampeg SVT together for djent tones. The 6505 is inherently noisy, but the Twin City DOES NOT add any extra noise. The drag control actually works by boosting the signal so there is no degradation when splitting....nice! Highly recommended.

BEST BUFFERED ABY OUT THERE!

By TAB HUNTER

Comments about Radial Engineering Tonebone Twin-City Active ABY Switcher:

I've owned one since it's debut. If you're driving 2 amps you really benefit by using a buffered ABY (otherwise you halve the signal to each amp using a passive set-up). I also use the phase-reverse to run both channels of my fender blackface amp at the same time (with blackface amps, the 2 channels are out of phase with each other). Great features. Dead silent. Ground lift gets rid of ground-loop noise like a charm! It's the best ABY you can buy.

Comments about Radial Engineering Tonebone Twin-City Active ABY Switcher:

I own the Radial Engineering Big Shot (comments about Twin Cities below). I use it to split my input signal between a Mesa Boogie Mk III and a Mesa Boogie Rectoverb (and of course a tuner!) I use the Big Shot in this setup primarily to reduce hum with the isolation transformer and ground lift. While this does a great job at reducing hum it does also reduce tone; using this setup my tone is less alive. That of course is the compromise I had to make to run two amps. When I saw that Radial had an active (buffered) version of the pedal with drag control, the Twin Cities) I bought it immediately thinking this would restore my tone. Thinking that this would allow me to get the same tone I get when I plug straight into the amp. Well unfortunately that is not that case.

The twin cities does the same great job of reducing hum from ground loops that the big shot does, but it does not completely restore tone as I hoped it would. By adjusting the drag you can get closer to that "plugged straight in" sound, but not completely there. For that reason I returned the twin cities and am continuing to use the big shot. What I found is that there just is not a big enough improvement in tone when using the twin cities. Also the twin cities does not have a tuner out like the big shot. For reference the guitars I use are a Fender Telecaster, Gibson Les Paul, and Peavey EVH.

Comments about Radial Engineering Tonebone Twin-City Active ABY Switcher:

I use my TwinCity to control one amp that is basically clean and a second that has nine pedals that stand between guitar and speaker. Every AB/Y that I used prior to this just left the Phase the way it was, and that screwed me up royally. Not to mention most left my B side noisy and any use of the Y function dropped the volume and tweaked my tone significantly... But then I bought this pedal and everything that didn't work just went away. My tone is back to normal and my second amp roars as loud (if not louder) than my primary.

No tone loss. No Volume loss. No ground loop noise. No phase issues. No brainer.

Comments about Radial Engineering Tonebone Twin-City Active ABY Switcher:

The Buffer alone is worth the price of this pedal. I run though 10 pedals total, my signal gets split to two amps after the first 4 pedals (not counting the twin city), one side goes to a JCM800, the other goes through another six pedals (modulation, delay, reverb, etc), and into a Fender Bandmaster.
The buffer in this pedals results in both amps sounding like I am plugged straight in, with a ten foot cable. No high end loss whatsoever (and if you're the kinda guy that likes using a 30 ft. cable because of the high end roll off, the drag control gives you the option for that sound too, and various shades of color in between).
But the real purpose of this thing is to be able to use two amps at once, without any of the possible ground loop hum/buzz that happens so often in that scenario. It seems like a ridiculous amount of money for what should be a very simple device.
I mean clearly there's other A/B options out there, so it does seem sort of ridiculous to pay this much for something that does the same basic thing right? Not if you've used the other simple A/B boxes (there are other brands that make High Quality A/B boxes though, Most are just more expensive, and don't sound as good). A "simple" A/B box, Does indeed switch between two amps. But doesn't allow any options for deal with noise issues that may arise. Got a ground loop, or any sort of noise associated with using them both at once? Hope you enjoy it. The non-buffered Radial A/B box, does offer an isolation transformer, and ground isolation. That isolation transformer, also causes output B to be much darker/quieter than output A, because there is No buffer to help the signal make it through the transformer unaffected.

If you use two amps, and experience ground loops, Hum/Buzz, etc.. This is the solution.

Another nice use is that if you use an older BF/SF (or reissue) Fender with reverb, you can now jumper the channels without phase cancelation. (The two channels are out of phase by design)

Comments about Radial Engineering Tonebone Twin-City Active ABY Switcher:

The Radial Twin cities Tonebone is an awesome switcher which does not zap tone and works super silent. It is active and it's buffered so it cleans up everything in your chain be it long guitar cords or noisy pedals. I hear a lot of people saying they like passive switchers because they don't need power. Well I can tell you from experience that passive switchers suck...they suck tone and they are noisy. This pedal works like a dream and has all the essentials needed in a top notch switcher for a decent price. 180 switch so your amps are always in phase. Lift switch that eliminates noise and a drag boost that restores any tone or action loss from the pedal and cords. Nice LED lights.Really it has almost all of the features of the much more expensive Radial Switchbone pedal! This thing kills any cheaper passive pedal. I love this thing! I'm now running a JCM 900 and an X-100b together and it sounds amazing! Don't waste your money on an cheaper passive switcher. Pay the extra dough and get this pro level switcher. You won't be sorry!

I use the Twin City ABY to switch between a guitar amp (100 watt head running through 4x12 cab) and a bass amp (combo). There's no noise when I switch between A, B or Y. Also, the Twin City pedal doesn't mess with my signal at all. Works exactly as advertised. Definitely worth it.

Just chasing tone and decided to run a YJM100 Marshall head with a Mesa Mini Rectifier through 2 Mesa Cabs in each corner. Incredible. I was using a basic AB for guitars and it sounded good.I then started runnning in stereo through effects and got the Boss Ls2.Even better.Hooked on stereo,I learned more about issues when running 2 different heads so I got the Bones. No difference till I moved the lift switch and then the 180. The stereo echo and chorus came to life and the sound moved its focus to center filling the room. Also the echo ping pong setting began pinging back and forth betreen speakers. I was happy before with the effect but did not realize what I was missing. The sound went from what you could tell was 2 cabs to just wall of blended tone with a center focus. I just wished I would have read up on the subject and bought just once.
