Roland AC-33

Features:

Lots of features. Two channels with full eq and volume.  Phantom power.  Lots of input and output jacks on the rear.  Nice effects.  Very light and portable. And it has a looper which is fun.  I have a Roland AC-90 which is really great.  The AC-33 is like a mini AC-90 with all the features and more, except for the sound. I hoped it would sound similar to the AC-90, just maybe not as loud.  And it wasn't as loud, and I was not impressed with the sound, especially on battery.  It probably would benefit from having a tweeter/high frequency speaker.  The full range speakers just don't cut it.   And the battery power feature is a great idea.  You can use AA batteries, but again, the amp may have sounded better with a better power supply, maybe something rechargable.

Quality:

The AC-33 appears to be built well, as are most Roland products.  No cheesy knobs or jacks.  And everything seemed to work as it should.  But the quality of the sound was not there.  This was actually the 2nd AC-33 I purchased. The first one sounded pretty much the same, The sound with the AC adapter is okay, but it goes downhill with batteries.  As the volume goes up, sound quality goes down.  If you push it a slight bit too hard, the sound breaks up, and it appears almost that there is a limiter on the output.  I find this disturbing, and I think it makes the amp less useful.  If you are using it on battery and the sound clamps down, what's the point.  You need to be amplified and heard.  Might as well go full acoustic.

Value:

Well, if the sound quality from the amp was much better either on AC or battery, it would be a good value, although a little over priced.  And I'm always willing to pay a little more for Roland quality.  But this amp just doesn't deliver.

Overall:

Nice features.  Well made.  Sound quality needs to be improved.

What 7 years can bring

Features:

Been playing through AER 60 for years. Tried others, looking for something lighter and battery powered; never found anything good enough to switch to until now. Looks like the technology just caught up. Sound is transparent. Reverb and chorus are quality. Looper is nifty.

Quality:

Just had it for a few weeks now. Seems excellent.

Value:

Seems good.

Overall:

I hope it holds up to heavy use as the AER has. Speaker covering material seems light. I keep it covered in the case. Wish it came with a case. I'm using case from a Roland 60 I also have. It fits with pedals, cords, etc. BTW, I like it more than the 60. Sounds as good, is lighter and runs on batteries. Suggest a car charger and high quality batteries if you use it a lot.

Having the AC-90, I was pretty skeptical as to what this was going to sound like.  This is a great little amp.  You only have to use it for a couple minuted to love the sound quality.  I haven't used it on batteries yet, but i'm sure I will some day.

I also bought the FS-6 pedal to control the looper functions (which works awesome) but couldn't find the PCS-33 cable anywhere.  Its mentioned in the AC-33's User Manual but nowhere else.  So I just used a straight through TRS-TRS cable and it works just fine.

The Chorus and Reverb functions sound fantastic.  I also think its great that they added an input level for your MP3 player etc.  I tried a Shure and an AKG mic through it, and it sounded great.  I also plugged in my Martin OMJM which also sounds amazing.  This was a great buy!

They should have included a gig bag.  That's my only complaint.

Overall:

This is a great little amp for any acoustic guitar player!

Great Little all in one amp

| Review By: Mark Treu | 6 months, 4 days ago

5 people out of 5 found this review helpful

Features:

I purchased this amp to take to small gigs with just me singing with my guitar.  It provides great sound for a small venue and I love the way my performance sounds coming from this little box. It's easy to cary in it's case and has pockets for everything I need.  Overall I am extremely pleased.

Quality:

Excellent quality, decent effects, great sound!

Value:

I think that this amp is certainly worth the price, but I wouldn't say that it is a total steal.  Its probably a fair price for the quality of product that it is.

Overall:

If I had the choice again I would most certainly purchase this amp again.  It has been a pleasure to work with and has served me well.  I love the sound and the simple effects are perfect for the one man show who needs an easy to carry around PA system.  I love the pole mount feature as well which is an absolute must to get your sound up and above a crowd.  I have also used this amp as a personal monitor while hooked up to a larger PA system.  It works great.  This is one of the better do everything, all in one amps that I have ever used.

AMAZING SMALL ACOUSTIC PA

| Review By: Tubeblues | 6 months, 1 week ago

Features:

I play places from large noisy bars to small dinner venues.  A couple places I could amost do just acoustic they are that small.  I no longer need to drag my big room set up out to these gigs.  My guitar case weighs more than this amp.

I have tested this amp at full volumes and it does not flub or breakup one bit. You do not need a speaker stand for this setup.  Just more stuff to carry in.  I set it on a chair or under my bar stool.

Plain and simple.  If you are a solo musician and picky about your sound you will not be disappointed using this little amp.  Street fairs, hotel lobbys, coffee houses, you name it.

Quality:

One thing nice to keep weight down is the plastic case.   Don't be weary of the small speakers.  They are not cheap sounding and can handle this thing at full volumes.  The input jacks are plastic something.  I'm carefull plugging straight into them and removing the plugs.

Value:
Overall:

I have had every Roland battery amp for guitars they have made.   I also used the AC 60 for my main acoustic solo amp for a few years.  This one is just as nice for ACOUSTIC guitar and VOCALS.  Of couse it does not have the 60 watts of head room but it gets amazingly loud.
