OVERVIEW

The world's smallest and least expensive U.S.-made guitar amp!

About the size of a cigarette pack, amazingly it can drive a 4 x 12 cabinet. (We didn't believe it either, so we tried it. And, sure enough, through the magic of technology, it was actually loud and sounded great, though the battery didn't hold out long.) It responds to the volume knob on your guitar and generates a sweet and convincing tube amp overdrive when cranked. It has its own built-in speaker. It can also be used on the input of another amp as a fuzz box.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

FEATURES
  • Great tube amp tone
  • Sympathetic overdrive
  • Tiny size
  • Speaker out jack (can be used with headphones that have their own volume control)

This little bugger seems to like single coils a lot better than humbuckers. Humbuckers just seem to overpower it a bit. With a SD equipped guitar, at 5 it was hitting it's limit, any more and it became just a mess of noise. But around 5 was perfect, nice and crunchy. But it's sort of limited in that area. With singles, I could crank it to 10 and get a good OD, but honestly for what it is I should've expected that. The small speaker just ain't got the air moving ability a larger one has, but I can't dog it for doing what it does. I needed a late night amp so I could hear myself and this delivers and sounds pretty good for such a small amp. For me, it's worth every penny.

I got one of these because I was going to my Dad's house for a week and there was no way I could haul my 70 lb. vintage Marshall with me. He would have freaked at the sound anyway. This so-called amp doesn't have any tone, the volume works through the volume knob on your guitar, it doesn't have any knobs or features, and since it doesn't plug directly into the guitar, you have to find a place to set it down and a cable to connect it with your guitar, which in my opinion is a serious drawback. There's also a ton of fuzz and distortion and noise, so tune up before you plug in, although the signal to noise ratio is so poor that it may not make that much of a difference. The only good things that can be said about it are that it's small enough to hide in your case or purse, and it's louder than you'd think for the size. Parents hate it! It's loud enough that my Dad said, "Turn that down!"I'd say, skip this one and get something else unless this is the only small "amp" you can find, and you have to leave tomorrow to go someplace where you can't take a real amp. Good for annoying your parents, not good for much else.

Nice, useful piece of equipment for the price

Comments about Smokey Amp Mini Amp:

The only thing that's missing is a clip on the back. Now that would be useful, if I want to attach the amp to my pants pocket.

Other than that, the Smokey is what it is. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Yes, some reviewers have said negative comments about the Smokey Amp. But for a $25 piece of equipment that can fit in your shirt pocket, I think it works great.

Let's be clear -- this isn't a Marshall stack or a Fender Twin reverb. But this little baby is perfect if I wanna play my electric guitar on the porch or at the beach. As a touring musician, it's also helpful if I want to practice in my hotel room, without driving the neighbors bonkers.

THE MOST AMAZING LITTLE AMP!

By william hunnicutt

from north of Dallas TX

Comments about Smokey Amp Mini Amp:

hI - I have 2 of these little guys and here's how I use them --- buy a 1/4 to 1/4 inch SOLID adapter used to plug stomp boxes together - insert into amp and now you have a usable UNIT without having to use a cable! This works best for "sitting down" if you use a SG or STRAT style guitar as you plug into the front of the guitar....... I have my practice guitar w/ strap on a wall hanger, and when I want to,I just put the adapter in the amp and insert into guitar and I'm good to go!!!! Simple and portable - hope this helps! ....... a rubber band for storage & travel.......... PRAY

Best little amp that I've used.

By Punx93-2wkP1

Comments about Smokey Amp Mini Amp:

THis little amp is great. It sound like an old sixties marshall tube amp and it is only slightly bigger than a pack of cigarettes. It has warm and gritty overdrive nd sweet cleans ( it's all a matter of your volume knob and pickups). it's loud for its size and it has no buttons or knobs just putting the cable jack into it turns it on. It has a fairly balanced EQ with low midrange wich you get by strumming in the middle of the guitar, so it's no big deal for metalheads. It is a fantastic value, a U.S.A. made amp that sounds so great for onle $25.00. The battery that comes with it is a alkaline battery and it lasts about 20 hours of playing, my rechargeable NiMh 9 volts last twice as long. It's great and you need to buy it!

Comments about Smokey Amp Mini Amp:

No question but that this is a very cool little piece of instrumentation. Works just as advertised. Could not be more straightforward. The sound quality is not hi-fi. But it is not terrible either. I found that simply lowering the volume on my guitar helped a lot. Of course, the downside of that is relatively soft volume. Oh well. I find it a lot of fun to practice with and to goof around with. Very happy with purchase, all in all!

I even endulge it's use when the battery is about to die & love that crackel is gives @ that point. Best investment I've ever made,(knowing it's NOW going for nearly twice the price I paid back in 1998 Makes me Grin even more so)

Maybe I recieved a dud and this actually a great product, I don't know. All I can say is the one I recieved was absolute garbage. The sound quality was absolutely horrible even for a mini amp and there was almost no volume. Tried putting in a fresh battery with no joy. I bought a mini amp at the military exchange for half the cost that sounded a thousand times better.

Comments about Smokey Amp Mini Amp:

Although this thing is tiny and well made, the sound that it puts out is terrible at any volume. I picked this Mini after reading reviews and I should have paid better attention to the bad reviews. The Low E, A and D strings make this thing crackle and pop, They are pretty much unplayable. The G,B,E sound like you are choking a cat.... All in all, waste of time and money.

As others have mentioned, don't crank the guitar too much. When I first plugged it in, I hated it, then I backed off the volume. It is a good little practice amp for playing around the house. I use cable straps to hold it on my guitar strap. I like it.

Comments about Smokey Amp Mini Amp:

Wow, this is a cool amp. So many people have tried to buy it off me. If you want a clean sound, look for something else. But if you want roaring screaming distortion, this is the one for you. I took this thing to school on the last day and started jamming down the hall and kids started to follow me. When I pulled the Smokey out of my pocket they couldn't believe their eyes (and ears). You can sort of make your own effects by moving your foot up and down over the speaker, just like a wah pedal! If you want an even bigger sound, bolt it to a bedframe or a wall and it will resonate. BUY!

Comments about Smokey Amp Mini Amp:

This amp is not to be considered a practice amp! More of an effect than anything else. When you plug your guitar into it, you get a bunch of fuzz out of the shoddy little speaker. When you plug it into your amp, you get a very nice fuzz distortion that is highly usable. However, there is no clean channel, and the distortion does NOT clean up with the guitars volume knob. It is a very fun TOY! However, even as a toy, it is severely OVERPRICED! I have actually built a very similar circuit WITH a clean channel that will power a 4*12 cab (as will the Smokey) for about half the price of the Smokey.Basically, if you want a fun overpriced toy, this is for you. If you want a nice sounding fuzz tone through your amp, this is STILL for you. But if you want a "practice" amp, STAY AWAY!

I use it for practice and have plugged in a speaker for a little jam session. It takes a lot of abuse the built in speaker isn't great but its smalle so you can't do much about that. I think its great. I think a tone and volume slider could fit and would make it better but no complaints

Comments about Smokey Amp Mini Amp:

I bought this mini amp just to play outside until I could afford an acoustic. It quite loud for its size. The only problem is that you can only play with distortion. If you turn your guitar's volume down far enough, you can play with a clean sound but you can barely hear it. It can indeed power a cab, but I don't recomend it. The battery life is amasing. I've had the same battery in it for a year. You can even take the plastic case off and modify it to fit in an empty cigarette pack. Overall, its more of a toy than an amp. Its definately worth the price. It's fun to mess around with if you don't have a distortion/overdrive pedal.

Most of the smaller amps I have played out of haven't had that great of a sound. When a friend of mine told me he got one of these and it sounded great I just had to see. The sound through it really is great. It works very well as a pre-amp and is also good for practicing when you can't be too loud.
