OVERVIEW

Hand-wired tube goodness, unique features, and unparalleled value.

The six-watt Special 6 guitar combo amp gets its powerful tube sound from one 12AX7 preamp tube and one 6V6 output tube, with a 10" VHT High-Sensitivity speaker. It boasts a footswitchable Gain Boost feature that significantly expands its range of tones-it's the only amp in its class that excels at both clean and overdriven tones, and it's the only amp in its class to offer a footswitchable boost. With the Gain Boost, players can instantly toggle between clean rhythm tones and overdriven leads, essentially duplicating the footswitchable functions of a 2-channel amp in an all-tube, hand-wired, simple, 2-knob combo.

To further expand its range of tones, the Special 6 combo also features a High/Low power switch that enhances low-volume tones with extra-smooth richness (when in half-power mode). It's a great feature for recording, or for low-volume "bedroom" players. In high-power mode, it's one of the few amps in its class that is loud enough to compete with a strong drummer.

The mod-friendly VHT Special 6 guitar combo amp is easy to customize for home amp builders and tube-amp enthusiasts.

Wow! This little amp is a monster! I am a harmonica player in a full-on blues-rock-jam band and this little beauty sounds great live. I initially purchased it because I was looking for a smaller more portable amp to use in some of the smaller venues I play instead of lugging around my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. The VHT has been brilliant. I turn the Tone knob up to half, the volume to 3/4 and then I mic the amp. I add several harmonica pedals for effects and the sound is AWESOME! It has that gritty nasty Chicago blues tone so many harp players want and when I want a more in your face Rock tone, I can get that with a simple click of one of my pedals.

I also recently played the VHT at a duet gig with my guitar buddy and it sounded equally as great. I just turned the tone knob up a little more and the volume knob down a little, mic'd it and what a sound.

The one modification I made was to swap out the factory installed Chinese tube for a nice Groove Tube, which was very easy to do.

The unit is small and very portable, it looks sharp, it is solidly built and the 6 watts of power is perfect for harp playing. It can easily hook up to a bigger cabinet if you wish via the 3 1/4inch jacks in the back of varying ohm ratings, but I found that I preferred hearing my harp directly through the factory speaker. More is not always better. I also love the simple design. The VHT has one Tone knob and one Volume knob which are very easy to manipulate. If I want more variety in my sound, I use my pedals. I like the Stand By switch during set breaks and I also appreciate the Hi and Lo jacks which allow me to play at louder volumes for band gigs and lower volumes for practice in the home.

Even my band mates were impressed. Honestly, they were blown away by my tone and the power of this little baby. I have not found this kind of tone in amplifiers 2 and 3 times the price. For the price, it is a steal. Get one.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Using as a grab 'n go amp. Is surprisingly loud for its small size. Only a little hum with the boost engaged, and is quiet for a Class A amp. Stock tubes sound good, but not great. Upgraded to Tung Sol 6V6GT and 5751 for clean sound with stock tubes as backup. Speaker is very good. Loves pedals. A keeper. Chosen over Fender Pro Jr. Would recommend for use in a small space, and for anyone on a budget.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I love this amp. No mods. The Special 6 Combo has that good tube sound and breaks up gradually and nicely from about 75% and up. Has a pretty dark sound, so I use a Tele to get a really sweet tone. You'd have to mic it to a pa for a gig with a loud drummer. Fit and finish are superior. The VHT Special 6 Combo is a great amp.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I just received my VHT Special 6 and as soon as i took it out of the box i was very impressed by the built quality of this amp, they cared! You can tell when you have a sturdy, well built amp in your hands and this one is! all the features that this amp has AND can be modded to your playing styles! C'mon ... for the price it is a bargain BUT plays AND SOUNDS bigger, and more expensive than it is. Folks i have owned and researched LOTS of amps and for the money, features and quality you are getting (yeah the only thing is Hand Wired in China-and I personally only buy USA products)but i could not find a 6V6 tube amp with all this for under 500 bucks! Takes pedals VERY WELL and goes very well with a small EL84 tube amp running with it! This is based on an American amp (the Vox I own is based of British Amps) so you have your Bread and Butter! its all you need for almopst any kind of music! Just remeber speakers need a "break in" period, from what I was told is to keep the volume under 1/2 and play full rythym chords with either a middle pick up or a middle position for a while with your guitar volume on full, speaker needs those frequencies to "move" the cone to break it in. Don't "distort" the amp when new either (they dont sound "that" good until the speaker ages) Great amp and should be great for a long time!

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Well built and too loud for the small studio. Has a wide variety of good clean tube tones. Kind of a dark sound, so I'm using a Squier CV 50s Tele. This amp sounds good by itself, so I plugged it into a 1X15 bass cab, and that sound pretty good, too. Now I've put pedals, rev, delay, trem, wah, and OD, and that all sounds pretty good, too. I'd like to make changes to get more natural amp o.d. at a lower volume without the pedal.
Great choice of features! The high/low/standby swithch works well. The high input jack is way louder than the low input jack. The foot switch gives a good loud boost. This amp has 4, 8, and 16 ohm spk out, I use the 8 ohm out to a 1X15 bass cab once in a while. These features make this amp a lot of fun.
It's still pretty new, but, everything seems nice and tight.
This amp is feature rich and worth more than what you'd pay for Pro Jr.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

My first foray into tube amps was a Traynor YCV40. It was too loud, so I figured I'd get something lower wattage and maybe with a little more of a vintage tone, so I bought a Vox AC30. Yeah, that was still way too loud. Anyway, while I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the Vox I purchased this little guy to use at home for practice. HOLY COW. I sold the Vox, and I use this as my main amp now. It sounds incredible! The tone stack on the tone knob is REALLY useful, and there's more clean room here than you think. It gets PLENTY loud for nearly any gig I could ever play; I always play with a PA system, so I don't see why I would ever need something louder. I play my USA made G&L Legacy Special (strat style guitar) and my Ibanez AS93 (es335 copy) into this puppy, and it SINGS. Great tone, very fenderish, but with the right settings and pedals you can cover vox and marshall territory as well. Even if I wind up adding more amps to the stable some day, this sucker is staying.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

      Overall a wonderful sounding amp.
      Quality control is unsatisfactory.
By the time I found the defective 6V6 tube it was beyond warranty.
Anyway do not mess with this unless you are a builder and know a lot
about electron tubes and idiomatic anomalies to do with electronica.

If you don't have an "amp tech" then steer clear of VHT.
      Grreat features- concept just right.
      Dubious.
Would not buy VHT any more.
Order extra tubes at the same time as ordering amp.
Value is good but quality control is missing.

      Good Luck.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I love this amp. It is incredibly versatile, even with only two knobs. I am amazed by the amount of different tones I find with this amplifier. It has a high power and low power switch that not only quiets the amp down but changes its characteristics (darker on low) which gives this amp even more tonal variation. The boost push/pull volume is significant and can produce some pretty great distortion and volume. It takes pedals really well and my original RAT never sounded better(note: looping pedals get muddy because of the single 10" speaker). It is loud and even louder with an extension cab and records very well. There is some slight noise, but hey, it's a tube amp and I've never owned one that didn't make some sort of noise. It will be loud enough for gigs, but may need micing with a drummer. Cheap tube replacement (2 tubes) if you want/need them. And to top it all off, you can play around with different 12ax7's and get an adapter to install an EL84 in the power section. Easily modded. What the hecklebeans! This amp is my new favorite tool. Musicians Friend honored a freshly expired sale for me and got it here quicker than expected. Great service all around.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I wanted the purest, truest, simplest yet full-fledged tube tone I could find for recording, guitar evaluation, and playing in general - without breaking the bank. This li'l guy, IMHO, delivers on all counts.

You can do just about anything with it. High/Low power, boost On/Off, and HI/LOW inputs give you 8 combinations over which to vary the Volume and Tone controls. Speaker outs let you make it sound big. Mic-ing to a PA even bigger. Takes pedals well for pretty much any style of music.

So far, so good, and I wanted 'hand-wired' not so much for mods, but for easy repair if ever needed. The easiest 'mod', of course, would be to change out the 6V6 tube with an EL84 using the available adapter for a variation in the amp's character.

The 10" speaker gives it a solid, focused sound that I would be hard-pressed to improve upon. The movement of air I think is important, as direct-in and modeling just don't cut it for me. And you'd be surprised the tonal variations that mic placement can make.

This li'l guy is a winner. And a steal. And probably offered as such by the company as an introduction to its products, which I would give serious consideration to if I ever needed to look at something bigger.

After I changed the tubes to a Tun_Sol 12AX7 pre-amp and Ruby JJ 6V6GTCZ power tube, this amp has the great blues sound I was seeking.

There's nothing wrong with the speaker.

This is a very good value.

The point to point wiring just adds to the flexibility of this little amp.

I have since bought a second VHT Special 6 specifically for modifying. I didn't want to mess with the one I am using all the time.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I'm absolutely amazed at the sound of this low-priced amp. First of all, it's got amazing clean headroom for a 6w amp with a 10" speaker. If you feed it a low-power signal it will easily go to 9 o'clock on the volume before it hints at breaking up. BUT - if you feed a hot signal it will breakup and give you a nice warm tube tone with emphasis on low mids. It's very responsive to a boost pedal. Using a Timmy pedal with a little gain boost and manipulating the guitar's volume gives you amp perfect amp for small gigs and recording. I would definitely recommend this amp to anyone looking to play blues, country or classic rock.

This thing cranks. One clean channel with a gain boost for solos. IT gets WAY louder when you engage the gain boost. I call it my Ted Nugent channel. Great amp for a rhythm guitarist. Doesn't have the attack but boy its warm and creammy goodness fills up the room. I gigged with it for over a year at night clubs replacing my 212 vintage tuck n roll kustom. I'm the singer but I do a few leads and it worked great when mic'd. put a stompbox in front and it will do anything you want from crystal clear to shredding metal. The cops will come if you crank this thing past 3/4. I know from experience.

I gave this amp 5 stars based on a few variables. The first being value. I challenge you to find a better amp at this price point. Extremely high quality compared to other sub three hundred d o l l a r amps. Sound being the second variable. This thing has an incredible sound right out of the box. I have not swapped tubes or the speaker yet. The tone knob and variable power settings let you get a wide variety of tones out of this amp, and the volume is enough to keep my neighbors up all night beating on my wall/door. The build quality is astonishing. No rattling, no scuff marks, no excess of glue seeping from seams on the covering, solid construction. This amp was very well built and feels solid. I have trouble getting it to break up with my 50's strat at low volumes which is to be expected with the vintage noiseless pickups, however I put a ts9 in front of it and wow, it blows my mind at low volumes. Cranked up it leaves me speechless. This is probably one of the best values in the tube amp market and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another one. Go try it out.

Straight forward no frills amp. Good distortion when cranked and nice cleans when not. Slight hum with single coil pickups but nothing horrible. Tone control is quite effective. Amp responds well to dynamics both in picking and using volume and tone of the guitar(Telecaster is what I'm playing). The inclination by many of the reviews I see on here is to modify this amp. Indeed it is ripe for it but I'm gonna let it break in and see what it does as a stock amp. I'm fairly certain I'll do a tube switch to a 6L6 power tube and a 5751 or 12AT7 preamp because I want more clean headroom but for now I'm happy with playing around with the amp as is. How would I know if I like it without giving it a chance to settle in? My advice would be to give this amp a break in period before you go making any radical changes. It will sound different and take on its own characteristics after a bit and THEN make decisions about what would work for you.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Had to replace the flat-sounding Chinese tubes with vintage ones: Zenith 6V6 and RCA 12AT7. This gave me more 50's clean tone, which is what I was going for. Next, I replaced the VHT speaker (too much bass, fairly harsh) with a 1955 Rola Alnico speaker. Sparkle! Yeah I spent a bit more on upgrades. But what I got in return is an amp that sounds three times what I paid overall. I also own a Traynor YCV40 and a Vox AC4TV. I've done modifications on them as well. However, with them I still need a few pedals to get near the sound I want. With the VHT Special 6 all I need is my Telecaster and a Carbon Copy pedal. Indeed, I've found "my sound." I love that VHT is encouraging modifications. They were easy and totally worth it! If this amp explodes I'll 1) enjoy the fireworks, 2) cry for 10 minutes, and 3) get back online to order another one through MF.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Just a great little amp with many possibilities! I've used this for recording my music with a H&K tubeman ii as a preamp and it sounds even better with the flexibility of the eq to refine your sound. After listening my play back with layers of rhythm and lead. I was blown how big it sounds coming from a 1x10 combo! I also changed the tubes. I currently have a NOS Mullard and a JAN Philips 6l6 for a whopping 10 watts instead of the 6v6 6 watts!

If I took this to an open mic gig? It would have no problems! It's solidly built and has no frills controls with just tone and volume along with a wattage selector.

This is value for your money! I thought about the special 6 ultra, but the inability to switch channels was a turn off. Priced at 150.00 more than the special was another factor.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I'd been using a solid state, but I was just getting really unimpressed with the tone and wanted to switch to tubes. I wanted a good and simple tube amp to play in my two bedroom apartment without disturbing the neighbors or waking up my baby. There are enough options in this amp to deliver a good range of tone and volume, and it handles overdrive pedals really well for when you want to play dirty. The boost pedal is also a really sweet plus, though you have to crank the volume to really get it working. I also like that I can plug it into a speaker cab for more volume with the input jacks in the back of the amp. If you're on a tight budget, like me, and you want a portable, easy-to-store, low-to-mid volume amp, get this one.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

After 19 years of playing guitar I finally made the switch to a tube amp and could not be happier! I bought a Fender hybrid half-stack early on and have used that for a very long time. I was originally just looking to switch to a smaller amp. I played a lot of the modeling amps like the Mustangs and Valvetronixes but they sounded a bit flat/uninspiring. I thought tube amps seemed too expensive but this is a gem, especially for the price.

I think you have to be an experienced player to hear and feel the difference a tube amp makes. You can really hear every nuance in your playing and it forces you to be more disciplined.

The Special 6 is a perfect option for me because it is pretty small but can still get plenty loud for household use. It sounds really great, well balanced but very slightly on the dark side. The reason I chose this over a Bugera or Vox is the circuit board is made to be hacker friendly and there are a lot of mods documented online. (I am also an electronics geek.)

If you are looking to define a signature sound I think you need to get a tube amp. This is a great one if you don't want to shell out too much money. The speaker and tubes are easily upgradable, and there are a lot of mods, so if you are into it you can really customize this to your liking.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

It took me a little while to bond with this amp, but now that I have I really like it. The sound is very defined and nuanced. My playing technique really comes through. It's not very forgiving since I hear lots of subtle sounds, but it forces me to play better. It overdrives fine, especially in combination with an overdrive or distortion pedal. My guitars with humbuckers and P90s sound best; to me it sounds rather dull and weak with single coils.

This amp is a great contender in the low watt category. It is also pretty easy to modify. I have since changed the speaker, tubes, and even the grill cloth to suit my tastes, and it's even better now. I am fond of being able to tweak something so it's the way I like, and this amp is great for that. The point-to-point wiring allows further modification and easy repair.

Definitely consider this if you're looking for a low watt amp.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I really love this little guy, it sounds fantastic after a little tweaking. I purchased VHT's EL84 converter and swapped both tubes to higher quality (JJ) tubes and I do believe I found the sound I was looking for! The cheap stock 6V6 wasn't too good, but problem solved. For way less $$$, tube swap included, this guy sounds just as good as a Marshall Class 5 IMO!
