I LOVE this amp! I am not a noob beginner just drooling over his first amp. I have been playing for 35 years and have owned many good amps. I have always preferred tube amps, but I was looking very seriously at the Fender Super Champ X2 and the Fender Mustang III. After a in-store test drive of both amps, neither one had the tone I wanted, not to mention the 'fizz' issue with the Mustang III. So, I started looking elsewhere, and I came down to this amp or the Jet City JCA2112. In the end, I chose this one over the Jet City because the Jet City uses a EL84 output tube, and this one uses a 6V6, sort of..... you can literally swap out ANY octal tube in this amp, with NO bias adjustment, and it will just go with the flow. I have, thus far, tried the 6V6 (which it ships with), a Sovtek EL34B, and a Ruby 6L6GC. All of them sounded okay, including the stock 6V6, but the 6L6GC was creamy and wonderful sounding. I also swapped out the stock Chinese preamp tubes for a JJ 12AX7 and a Philips (long plate) 12AXWA.... big difference! They make these amps to mod and play with, heck, they even have mods listed on the VHT facebook page!
The only slight drawback I have with the amp may not even be an issue for many people.... the stock speaker, a 12" VHT 'Chromeback' sounded really 'woofy' at first, I mean I hated it, but the more I played it, the better it sounded. Now that I have put quite a few hours in on it, it really isn't bad. I'm sure that there is some 'better' speaker out there that I would probably be happier with, but for now, I have no problem using this one that came with it.
All in all, this is a great bargain, no, an EXCELLENT bargain. I have played all sorts of music through ths amp (Wes Montgomery style jazz runs, Van Halen, AC/DC, Govt Mule, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Kentucky Headhunters, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Country, old clean 50's style, you name it!) and they can all be easiily dialed in on this amp. I did this using my Strat, my Les Paul, and my SG. My Gibsons have all Alnico II pickups, which sound heavenly through my 5150II half stack and through my Marshall JMP 2203. As you can probably surmise, I didn't buy this VHT because I needed a monster, I bought it because I need a good, small, portable combo amp that can give me the sort of tonal variety that I get with my 'big' amps (the VHT is only 6 watts, but WOW what a 6 watts!). This amp delivers big time. It sounds good with the stock speaker, but I also ran it through my 5150 cabinet and it sounded beautiful and full.
Knowing full well that I will have to mic the amp (or use the included Line Out jack), I would gig with this amp with no hesitation whatsoever. Hey, I'd even love to grab another one to run them in stereo, that'd be a wonderful little rig with a variety of great tones!
Really, I can't say enough good about this amp. I have drooled over the thought of an old blackface Fender for a very long time, because I know how beautiful they can sound, but who can find or afford one? Well, this amp has that same capability, and it is literally made to mod it to your taste. Is it loud? Nope, and it aint supposed to be, but the tone is staggering for such a low-priced (notice I didn't say 'cheap'?) amp. Buy one, you won't regret it!!
Clean and footswitchable (footswitch included) boost volumes (not chanels), depth control, treble range adjustments, 1/2 power switch, fully adjustable output wattage, tube buffered effects loop, this amp is loaded with features.
Build quality is excellent. Sturdy, nicely finished, you could tell the assemblers cared about the finished product.
This is, hands down, the greatest value I have ever seen in an amp. I have been playing guitar and buying 'stuff' for a very long time, and I don't make that statement lightly. In fact, they could charge twice as much and it would still be a good deal, this amp is that good.

This thing has great sound at managable volumes. Very Fendery tone. The controls allow for a wide variety of adjustments and the footswitchable boost is very cool.
I got two of these from Musician's Friend and both had problems and I had to send them back. The first just died - not a tube issue either. The second one, the input jack fell apart the second time I used it. I wasn't interested in trying to fix it after my experience with the first one.
If it worked, it would be a fantastic value. I've tried almost all of the other mass manufactured sub-10 watt amps and this has the best tone by far.

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
I use this in my home studio all the time. Nice to be able to get the sound of meltdown at low volumes. I bought a Jet City 1X12 cabinet, disconnected the internal speaker, and so I use it like a head, powering a speaker in the iso room. Great for crunch, grit. Not the cleanest clean sound but very usable that way. Using a yellow, Boss overdrive, you can get a ton of distortion with a good sound. I've also had good luck running the POD into the effects return, which puts your models through the amp's tube power amp and through a real speaker. Very handy amp.

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
The only reason I didn't give this a perfect score is because 1) It didn't come with an amp cover 2) No reverb. But the sound is like butter. This amp is now part of my rig (Shure 545 mic, lonewolf delay, and the VHT Ultra mic'd). I prefer this sound to Fender, Peavey, and (wait for it) Silvertone. What? Yes, I just said that. Anyways, great for practice, great for performances (mic'd) and for a reasonable price.

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
GUYS IN THE BAND SAID NO WAY IT WOULD BE ENUFF TO PLAY SMALL VENUES,WRONG!This is the amp I been looking for! I own Marshall and Peavey tube amps but, this amp will do it all, and so easy to haul and setup.I love it!!!
Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
I am a VHT guy for life now, its that good. They do make more expensive models that must be heavenly compared to this amp. For the price concious consumer its a home run. Although it has only 6 watts max it can still deliver enough volume for gigging. Tubes get loud people! mic this cab and put a smile on your face cuz it rocks. Its only other true drawback is that you will need a distortion pedal in order to play metalbut the tonal quality of this amp always shines thru. The amp takes pedals very well whether in front of the amp or in the effects loop. I use both, I have a large pedalboard with 10 stompboxes and half of those run thru the loop. The sound is TOP quality.my tip is to use QUALITY ANALOG effects and you will love the results.I also recommend the TC electronic hall of fame reverb, it is stellar!
all the adjustments you need to tailor you tone to perfection. This amp can be tweaked to achieve many different tones by adjusting the various dials at you fingertips. I am giving it a 9 only because there is no way to switch between channels without unplugging your guitar. This is not a problem for me because i use an EHX Metal Muff and MXR '78 distortion stombox pedals for distortion so i run mainly thru the clean channel with just a bit of grit. If they put a chnnel switch with footswitch in the amp it eould be a 10+.
The build quality of the amp is superior. I had a Blackstar ht5r that literally fell apart on me due to crappy korean construction. this amp is solid as a rock from the wood to the switches and the hand wired board. I did swap out the Chinese tubes which were ok but lifeless. I put an EHX 6v6GT and a Groove Tube 12ax7 in the ultra channel and a JJ 12at7 in the clean channel.the amp really came alive, i love it!!
unless you want a 100 watt amp this is an incredible value, they really should charge more but dont tell VHT I said that, lol!
Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
I have never before left a review here or anywhere alse, even though I have bought and sold 100's of thousands of dollars worth of gear including many boutique amps costing thousands....this piece of gear has inspired me...PLAY MUSIC - DON"T SHOP FOR GEAR!! - BUY THIS AMP!
Don't think of buying ANY other amp at ANY other price. This amp is IT! Sell your collection.
Using the swappable power tubes can take you from very old school Fender Champ/Princeton to full on punishing Marshall - and all very musical!!
Sounds are awesome right out of the box, however, options are what the amp is about.
I put an old 7581 (6L6 variant) in for a power tube, and old 12AX7 in preamp 1, and a long plate JJ in position 2. Forget about it! - I can do anything I want tonally now with all of the interactive EQ and gain structures on the amp. Fender and Marshall tones are all there.
IF YOU WANT TO THINK MORE ABOUT PLAYING AND LESS ABOUT YOUR GEAR - BUY THIS AMP!!!
Well built - simple layout...solid. Don't think twice.
Are you kidding?!

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
This amp sounds very nice, has lots of tone choices, is well made and is a great value at this price. It was a great choice for me because I don't need 100W of volume at my house yet there is enough volume to fill smaller venues if needed. Clean and overdrive tones are very nice. Hand wired means you can upgrade parts later if you want. I highly recommend this amp.
This amp has a lot of tone choices for something so simple. Don't confuse simple with lack of versitility. Play with the amp and the range of tones is huge. The push pull clean channel with foot switch is great. I rarely use my overdrive pedal anymore. The watt contoles are great and really add to the versitility of the amp. And yes, it is hand wired. I checked.
I was amazed at how well this amp is constructed. The thing is built like a tank. Nice attention to detail. The individual components are heavy duty. The speaker sounds full and really breaks in nice after a few months of playing. The tubes are some no name brand but sound nice anyway with smooth break up as the amp starts to overdrive. A retube should bring out some additional high end sparkle. Hard to believe this amp is made in China. Don't worry about where it is made. I've had mine for 6 months with no problems at all. I play almost every day so it's had plenty of use. This amp is good stuff.
A great value in tube amps. I shopped around for a long time and did a lot of reserch prior to buying this amp. I have no regrets. Sounds better than some amps that cost a lot more.
Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
If you read my comments above, you'll know very clearly how I feel about this amp. Yes, it's built in China and no, I don't favor anything Chinese, but this amp is superb and I have no qualms about rating it unequivocally as a '10.'
For the price, VHT focused its features selection for this Special 6 Ultra on tone, not on effects. So, you get no reverb or tremolo. Not surprising. Instead, what VHT does give you is an incredible amount of adjustment in tone via the combinations of wattage output, tone, depth, volume, volume boost, and ultra selector settings, as well as this quirky 'texture' switch. This texture switch doesn't appear to do much when you first plug in the amp, but after a week or two of using this amp, I've come to appreciate the subtle changes in tone it does make. With all of these options in tone adjusted in different combinations, you can, in fact, begin to create your own reverb. I'm still trying to dial in the settings that appeal to me the most for my Strat vs. my Flying V, but the efforts in doing so have been immensely pleasing.
Absolutely no complaints. Built with tremendous quality. I took it on the road this Christmas weekend and loading it into the car this morning, my son said, "Dad, is that thing heavy?" He could see how I was struggling a bit with it. That's not to say it weighs too much. It's just to say that it weighs a lot more than you would expect for a 6-watt tube amp. Of course, weight is down to size of speaker, real wood cabinet, etc. , which this amp has got. Which also gives contributes to its great tone. The quality is in this amp is tip-top.
Without a doubt, this amp is one of the best pieces of musical equipment I have ever purchased for the price. It's taken me a lot of trial and error with equipment purchases to discover what's really great for the given price. I'm not a pro player, but I do spend a fair amount of money on equipment for my playing hobby. And because I'm not out playing halls and clubs, I don't need a lot of wattage. So, I've purchased and returned a number of tube amps in the 4- to 30-watt range. This VHT Special 6 Ultra punches far above its weight. It's an absolute keeper.
Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:
I won't ever give up my 4x10 Clark Congaree. Ever. And I love my vintage Les Paul Gibson champ clone. I even found a way to love my Fender Pro Jr. as a harp amp. But, really, the VHT is a real love-at-first bite steal for this price. You save enough to buy a good quality verb/delay pedal and have enough options to experiment even before you start looking to dig deeper into board mods.Out of the box great amp for harp players who want nice tube tone w/o feedback problems. And your neighbors won't tell you that you're still not nailing the phrasing to LW's Juke....
I'm giving an 8 here because I've not yet had the chance to put this amp through all of its paces as live gig gear. But so far, I'm really excited about the versatility this amp offers me for rehearsing at home & playing with quiter combo/singer song writer side-guy set ups. I already own a ground-up built 4x10 Clark Congaree tweed bassman dialed harp amp with a built in attenuator and that's my rolling stock for a full-fledged ensemble gig in clubs or on festival stages. Too bad Clark no longer makes them because they are a killer boutique American made harmonica amp...I got the VHT because it's been generating a lot of great buzz on the harp internet channels and one reason is that players who also want to mod their amps have found this to be a great amp on a wide array of fronts.
The amp appears well-built and everything is accessible for those who are inclined to tweak or mod their board or tubes. I've replaced the tubes it shipped with by using new-old or deadstock tubes of higher quality (to my liking and ear) and always carry spares to gigs. The tolex is tight and the amp is well put together for this price range. Not a fan of the logo styling, but then again I don't want to pay another 500 bucks to dime out the facade. My 4x10 looks killer, but is so heavy, ain't nobody gonna wander off with it when my back is turned. So the fact that this doesn't look like a more expensive amp is fine with me. It looks like a solid state cheapy in some ways, but sounds like an amp that'd be worth half again as much in cost.
The array of controls for tone, texture, volume, grit, grind, punch, roll-off, shimmer, bottom...all been discussed well enough in other reviews here. I'll just add that as a harp player, I use a quiver of mics and each of these has it's own voice that will sometimes play very nice with one amp, but not with another. I've used vintage and new built crystal, em cartridge bullet mics, an Audix Fireball, a tiny condenser button mic, and sure 545 and even a 58 via xlr-to-1/4" plug adapter. And every one of them plays nice with this amp and can be dialed in so many different ways it just keeps me playing around with settings for hours just to see what flies...and ain't nothing crashed yet.
For non-harp players, you need to understand that the signal from a hand held mic is way hotter than your guitar pick up that feed back is usually a problem long before you get decent tone...so generally you have to swap out the pre-amp tubes to 12ay or 12au etc. and even mod the board to rolloff and get punch. And you need to be able to go from apartment rehearsal volume to competing with drums and multiple guitar players who all think they are SRV or Jimmy Page. This amp lets me do all of this, especially with the line out and an FX loop so that the verb, delay, and chorus pedals I might use don't get muddied in the overdrive of the preamp. Dig it, this amp does it.
Again, I'm only at an 8 here because time will tell. As a stay at home rehearsal amp, I don't see much of a rigors issue. And, again, a board that is easy to mod is also easy to fix...so that seems a plus to me simply as a matter of access and design. I keep spare tubes on hand all the time just because I'm inclined to be prepared. But if you treat your gear hard and are playing a hundred plus shows a year, then, well, who knows. Get an Anvil case for it.
I'm undecided about the speaker. That's a personal ear thing. So far, the shipped-with is doing just fine and I expect more break-in will improve it further. That said, at this price point, swapping out for a fave that fits this board or your mods to the board would be your choice and it's done easily enough.
Look, I'd rather buy American. And I own vintage American build Gibson, Fender, and new-build Clark amps. That said, are you freakin' kidding me? This tone and versatility at this price point speaks for itself. The line out is wonderful, too. And and FX loop is such a plus. This amp just does what harp players need done at a very, very, very reasonable price. And plays nice right out of the box. Another local harp player (who is a monster player) and someone who builds and mods his own amps with remarkable skill, really loves the less expensive VHT Special 6 for his quieter harp combo gigs. I admire this guy's playing, no question---killer tone and chops. But he knows the insides and outsides of amp builds. If he gives the VHT the thumbs up, all I can tell you is that was enough for me to go all in.
