It's super flexible and features a dry blend knob, up to +15dB of boost and an internal dip switch for attack control. This compact design is a powerful tool for working musicians. Not the cheapest compressor pedal, but very good for its price.

There are other good compressor out there, but for those who doesn't like a lot of controls and knobs to tweak the sound, this is the best option.

There are dip switchs inside to make it more versatile, but since the controls are internal, this is more apropriated for those who likes the "set and forget" kind of pedal.

The best feature is the blend knob, so you can avoid the over compressed attack blending it with the clean guitar signal. You can go from a Dynacomp squashed sound to a more subtle compression with just one knob. The compact size is also a plus.

The controls are Volume and Dry/Effect Blend Knobs and a switch with three levels of compression/sustain (lo, hi, mid). Plus, 4 internal dip switchs to control the Attack/Release time, High Cut Filter and Input Pad/Low Cut Filter.

In general:

Well built, easy to use, versatile, sounds great, low noise (for a compressor pedal).

Not recomended for who likes to tweak and change the sound all the time, since some controls are internal.

I purchased the Xotic SP to front-end my Avid Eleven Rack. While it's build quality and overall compressor performance are impressively excellent, the unit emits a loud POP! every time the compressor clamps down (typically when playing a first note or chord). I worked with the compressor for several days, trying all combinations of settings, including the internal DIP switches. All to no avail. The pop may not be an issue for someone using a standard amp with a crunch setting, but when using it for clean sounds with lots of hi-end EQ, delay and reverb, the pops are extremely annoying. I sent the unit back in exchange for a Wampler Ego and am achieving much better results.

Comments about Xotic Effects SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I actually bought a second of these for my "grab and go" setup. I fought compressors for years. Have owned some of the most highly regarded ones. Won't name brands but definitely expensive boutique. I'm sure they are great at what most want, but I don't want chicken' pickin', heavy compression. I want to even out my tone, slightly thicken and add sustain. This is perfect and I got the results I wanted immediately. If you want compression but don't like compressors (?) this might be the one for you.

I like to use a Compressor set kind of high to add punch , sustain and compression. When I have this pedal set to where it does what I need it to do , it is very noisy.

Comments about Xotic Effects SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I will start off by saying that the standard-issue MXR Dyna Comp is still my sentimental favorite, but this is the best-sounding compressor that I have ever used. It is supposed to closely resemble the classic Ross compressor, sound wise, but having never played an actual Ross, I can't comment on that.

However, this thing is awesome. I can't imagine anyone not being able to find their sound with this compressor, if compression is what you're looking for. You can go from subtle to super-duper-squashed, and everything in between. They even put an internal switch in that allows you to tweak it to be more humbucker-friendly. The only thing I have messed with is the little toggle switch on the outside. The Lo setting is nice and subtle....great for rhythm work. The Medium setting gets that great country-approved squish, without killing your tone. The Hi setting is great....think MXR Dyna Comp, maxed out, times two! Some may think that would be too much, but it does have it's applications. It would be great for funk-inspired chording or lightning-speed country runs, ala Brad Paisely or Albert Lee.

You can't go wrong with this one. If you want total transparency, get a Wampler, Maxon, or Diamond. If you want to keep it simple, get the MXR....it is a quality pedal, and fun to play with. However, if you like to experiment, like me, this is your ticket.

Comments about Xotic Effects SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

For a small compressor this unit houses as many features as any. Input pad/hi-cut filter/attack release time functions can be operated thru the internal DIP switches for infinite control, although the default setting is to my liking.
The exterior blend control is what really it's all about, allowing sustain and comp to shine without totally squashing pick attack and nuance.
Typical comp noise if used at the most aggressive settings and extreme settings are maybe best left to folks running noise gates but that's 100% expected. Running low to moderate compression and blended in it provides great sustain and fulls out the sound clean or dirty and with minimal noise.

Comments about Xotic Effects SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I work in a duo with backing tracks, and wanted a compressor to make the live guitar "sit" better with the tracks. I tried a setting that I liked at home, took it to the gig- expecting to have it on for only certain songs- but it never went off. It almost seems to make playing easier (I've never used a compressor before- I hate that squashed sound). Love it, even though living in South Africa made it very expensive.

I have several of these for the touring board, the fly board, and the studio board. They can shape tone, be an effect, be transparent, limit, compress - very versatile units. 3-way toggle settings are very good but the added internal adjustment allows users to really dial it in. There's a lot of power in those little boxes. Highly recommended!

great little ross style compressor. I mostly use it with my ep boost and a carbon copy or memory man to get smooth and deep delay tones. great for my rhythm playing. slightly noisy on higher setting but all comp's are. I would recommend this to anyone due to build quality alone. sounds great.
