The BSX Bass Allegro 5-String acoustic-electric upright bass is the best of both worlds. For tone, you get the depth and ring of an acoustic upright bass, with extremely flexible electronics. The multi-sensor piezo bridge system coupled with active circuit Bartolini electronics sounds extremely realistic both pizzicato and bowed. I like it, however...

Comments about BSX Bass Allegro 5-String Acoustic-Electric Upright Bass:

- It's an upright, with FIVE strings. YAY!
- The onboard EQ is great for dialing in your tone, and dialing out hand noise.
- Easier to transport than a full on upright.

- I feel the headstock design is flawed. Most upright heads have a single slot in the center in which all the strings go into and attach to the tuning pegs. This has two slots, with wood in the middle - BEA on one side and DG on the other. Instead of going clockwise around the headstock, the strings go from top to bottom on the low side: ie. if you play electric, your B and your A tuning heads are flipped around. Not that big a deal. HOWEVER, this causes the A string to bite into that center piece of wood, creating tuning problems. When the A goes out, you can turn and turn and nothing will change, and then suddenly the string will give, and you'll be marginally over/under where you want to be. I emailed BSX and they said the strings had to be in that order, because the B was unraveling due to the tension created if the strings were attached clockwise.
- Not having the body of a proper upright to use as a lean-to, balance and proper posture is an issue.

I like it, and it suits my purposes. However, I feel I should've just gone for a proper upright, instead of a hybrid, even though they don't come in 5-strings.

I've been from

Comments about BSX Bass Allegro 5-String Acoustic-Electric Upright Bass:

I bought my Allegro 5 string directly from BSX around September 2007 and could not be happier with my purchase. I wanted to learn to play upright after 11 years of bass guitar and there was absolutely no comparison between the two instruments. This thing pounds, growls, and rumbles as well as being fully adjustable for different playing styles and techniques unplugged or not. As it is not appropriate for all styles of music that I play, what it does for the mix in my band when I do utilize it, is so much more than I ever expected when I purchased it. The 3-band active e.q. and independent string volume control make for very flexible sounds and make it vastly customizable. This bass is really fun to play, especially on massive p.a. systems in front of large crowds, and is aesthetically attractive. I always get complimented on this bass for a number of different reasons. Fantastic job BSX, and thanks again.
